i dont like the Diesel engines, it seems like since they brought it in the prices went way up i went up on the train last summer and it was a friend and i and it costed around 114 bucks
This all begs the question: why can't they get the steam boilers to actually burn the coal? All that smoke is unburnt fuel- from bituminous coal. Very nineteenth century.
Either they could try anthracite, or coal "harder" than the previous, or adapt the boilers for secondary combustion. Chinese Railways had no problem with that!
I just threw up a little in my mouth...that is truly disgusting. I won't pay for the ride again without the cool steam engines. I mean, fuck, if they want to get all efficient then just put up a fucking ski lift and be done with it.
The Cog Railway is exempt from the NH pollution-control law, so why would they need to worry about their locomotives' emissions? They're all set as far as that goes, so they don't need a diesel. I personally wouldn't go on either the railway or the Auto Road to reach the summit; I would hike up Washington. But I agree with all of you that a diesel is wrong. This is a heritage railway, so aren't they supposed to prevent this kind of thing from happening?
The sad part about this is they tryed to make it look like one of the old engines with the cab shape, Man Leave the tractor in the field, this is a tragic loss. The whole point is the old time feel, smell, sound, and look that the cog had, Now for a diesel to come into play? what a waste!
If there has to be both steam and diesel then riders of the diesel should be able to pay a much lower ticket price to reflect the lower operating cost
I am not a train nut but I want to see the heritage of this railroad preserved. I understand how people are concerned about budgets and the environment but the diesel engine should not be ridding on such an historic railway. There must be ways to retrofit the existing steam trains to burn diesel in their boilers. Although this will cost more to operate it will still allow future generation to experience the living breathing steam engines.
Diesel fuel and steamers dont go to well together. They tried it on #203 down here in TN last April and it was so bad at burning a diesel had to shove the train up the steeper grades.
The steamer's run just fine on coal, and only 2 diesels are gonna be used, and only as backups.
I'm hoping to be able to make it up to NH to ride this some time next year. If that thing pushes my train up the mountain, I will be thoroughly dissapointed to say the least!
lol diesel destroyed everything

Then they could keep you steam purists happy.

Well, if it turns to all diesel, I can cross this railroad off my list of places to see before i die. Such a shame. They will loose buisness fast.

I sure hope management of the Cog Railway is getting some of this feedback from here and other sources.
I won't be paying for a ride again without steam.

That cab hanging off the back just looks odd - as if the whole thing is off-center. All the aesthetics of a chipped cinder-block.

I can appreciate a nice diesel locomotive, but this thing looks like they tried to deliberately tried to make it as ugly as possible.
