I worked a lot with him before letting him off leash. Daily practice with sit/stay/come, increasing the amount of time/distance/distractions. When we first started hiking I put him on a 75ft clothing line and practiced the stay/come commands. We graduated over time to off leash.
wow this breed seems perfect for my daughter she is very outdoorsy and loves dogs. Our Chinese shar pei recently died of admolyosis and i'm letting her pick out a breed shes going to train it carting and my husband and her will be hiking often. Can you tell me the average price and do they enjoy swimming?
I can speak for mine. He loves swimming, hiking in all weather. Rain, shine and snow. He swims in the ocean (body surfs), lakes, running rivers. Goes off trail onto deer trails to the peak. They were bred as herding dogs to retrieve sheep miles from humans. He braves all terrains and they are athletic, as you can see from the video. Good breeders charge $1000.
The breed is a working breed. When we hike I put a pack on him a let him carry some water and food. He is about 60lbs. Carting is one good way to drain energy. The key is 'enough' exercise. A good dog is a tired dog.
@BelgianMalinoisfreak Tough to say. Depends on the temperament of the dog and one's willingness to be a real pack leader. My mali was a rescue and put his head in my daughter's lap at the shelter. It took me a long time to learn how to correct him on walks when other dogs showed dominance or barked. At those times I struggled to keep him in check. Otherwise, off leash and with others he is amazing animal. They are a great breed.
@BelgianMalinoisfreak Malinois' are high energy. They need daily exercise. This was at the start of our hike. Drain them of their energy and they are terrific dogs. I walk my dog three times a day. The second walk is a multi-mile walk and we play ball at the end. On the weekends I take him hiking. They are an investment of time and it is very rewarding.
wow it does seem very rewarding thank you so much for your time I defiantly think this is a breed for my daughter thank you!
