  • It's in the fracking ship!!!!

  • Certainly the best explanation of "Kara Remembers"/"Heading The Call"/"All Along The Watchtown" that I've seen - the *VAST* majority never resolve the LH voicing correctly. One point that I'd mention is the F @ 1:56 in the melody line is intentionally wrong in the episode, as it's written to be Kara "feeling her way" around the piano. Other than that, wonderful explanation in both ease-of-use as well as theory-wise.

  • I was reading comments and I was like..."Is this frakking Baltar talking?!"

  • just thought i should point out that hendrix didnt write the song. bob dylan did.

  • Brilliant. Of all the tutorial videos, this is the only one that answered all of my questions regarding this song.

sophuis is right though: "If you listen close to the beat of the song, you'll notice that your base part is slightly off. The first chord is played a fifth time and then jumps to the second instead of the second being maintained this long"

My ears tell me the same: when Starbuck gains confidence after experimenting with her part, the first chord comes in a fifth time.

  • wow, no other song should be called all along the watch tower, I thought it was gonna be hendrix..-__-

  • In the nicest, but somewhat impatient of ways, two points:

    1. The song that Hendrix covered was written by Bob Dylan, doesn't he at least have the right to have a song called that?

    2. This is the theme from a different cover of the same song, incorporating elements of Dylan and Hendrix. I would have thought that was apparent from watching the series, really, but can understand the confusion if you've not seen it. In which case, I'd highly recommend it.

  • @RandomHero486 what the hell did u think BSG was?

  • Nice vid and you sound like Gaius Baltar! LOL

  • Fantastic step-by-step instructions, thanks! However, if you do make any more, they can only be made better by filming the keyboard the other way round :)

  • Cool. but as Ive never even touched a keboard, it would be beter for us bigniners to have the keyboard the right way around.. Unless I spin the monitor over its gonna be a bit hard. :-)

Must be cool to be able to play the tunes though.

  • agreed

  • If you listen close to the beat of the song, you'll notice that your base part is slightly off. The first chord is played a fifth time and then jumps to the second instead of the second being maintained this long - it's slightly off-beat like this. And the third chord is played a third time.

    Good job, otherwise.

  • Thankyou so much fo this! Not only does this sound right but you've explained it so brilliantly! :D

  • but wait.... in the scene where starbuck is playing with her "dad" he uses two hands to lay down the bass and the mid range. she used a third hand to do the high melody. whats going on there?

  • This is true, but the pianist's right hand is basically copying his left. It fills out the sound a bit more, but doesn't sound too bad here simplified to be playable with just one hand, leaving the right free to play the melody.

Thanks for the comment, and good question!

  • So what would it look like if you had "three" hands? I tried duplicating that your playing an octave lower but it sounds kinda muddy. I also tried playing the power chords that it looks like the "dad" is playing but the keys overlap. sorry, just curious.

  • Well done :) Can't wait for the new OST to be released :)

  • Excellent! I have been hunting for a VERY good tutorial and honestly out of the multitude that have popped up since that episode, yours has the best tone and closest match. Bravo!

  • Thanks very much, that's very kind of you.

  • whoop i'm a doctor who fan aswell lol

  • Jolly good, quite right! Thoughts on Planet Of The Dead?

In that case, the Doctor Who song I wrote is on here, the link is watch?v=m3cP1epKF4c&feature=response_watch

    Thanks

  • Good stuff - I loved this song in the series! Oh BTW, you need to put that pirates song up (the second one I think). It's totally wicked.

  • Yeah, I think Ron D Moore had a point in the sleeve notes to the soundtrack, including the song was the biggest risk they ever took, and I think also the most rewarding.

Thanks, but, erm, there are two pirate songs, which one? Lol. One is Chaos On The Restless Seas, that's an old Red Dawn song, the other is a 21-minute thing I've been working on for a year or two now.

    Both, perhaps?

  • I've never heard music which has acted in confluence with a television program to create such a dramatic yet spiritual atmosphere. So yeah, I totally agree.

I think I mean the 21-minute one which is, on the most part, solely instrumental - I just loved how its fundamental humourous aspects enhance it.

  • THE SCHMOES interview Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff PART 1 of 4

Here is part 1. Katee is a fan of the show and was nice enough to come in to the "studio" and shoot the shit with Kristian and Mark. We ask a bunch of BSG questions in part 1 and just goof around.

PLEASE CHECK OUT PARTS 2 & 3 as well (4 is coming soon!)

We want to get this seen- please RATE/COMMENT/SUBSCRIBE!

    Thanks!

    THE SCHMOES

  • Thanks, I enjoyed that. I'm not a musician, but I do appreciate good music (playing and composition), especially when it's applied well to TV and film.

I loved the whole BSG All Along the Watchtower thing so much that I came looking for videos on how it's done. I'm not a musician but I like to have a go on virtual keyboards and play by ear. On one virtual keyboard I pressed E,E,E,E,D,C,C,C,C and then back to E :) I wish I had the dexterity to play keyboard but I'm too old to learn now.

  • Hey boss... this video is outstanding... however... I noticed a very very slight mistake. Your version is 99% correct. As far as the notes/chords are concerned, you sound exactly correct. However... the first set of notes (C-sharp, E, G-Sharp) are played four times, the second set are played TWICE (not once), then the third set is played 3 times, and then you have the final D-major chord which is played once.

In the episode "Someone to Watch Over Me", the 4th chord is played on the 2nd and 6th.

  • This is true, sir, you're absolutely right. I have a feeling I left that bit out when the right hand melody came back in as my piano skills are somewhat suspect, playing anything other than single chords with the left hand while playing a tune with the right really confuses me! Then again, since I didn't play it twice at the beginning when only playing the chords, I probably had worked it out wrongly.

    Cheers!

  • And I didn't want to give the impression that I was knocking your version at all. Your version is absolutely, by FAR the best version out there. Up too and including the "mysterious F." Excellent work sir. I still come to this video to listen to your version. I love the way you almost EXACTLY duplicate the entire scene's sound.

    Keep up the good work.

  • So, erm, why not go listen to the Hendrix version then, instead of, you know, hanging out on a video you don't like, and being a bit of a knob?

I think you mean 'bollocks' by the way, a bullock is a young male cow.

Likewise, the phrase is 'taking the piss,' if I was taking *a* piss, I doubt Youtube would let me post it.

Cheers for the interest, have a lovely day.

  • rofpmsl!!!

    Great reply!

Great video too, informative, & the most accurate i've seen :-)

  • Very interesting, very cool. I'll have start playing piano again, after a five year hiatus, and try to play it. lol

  • Frakkin A sir, thanks, now I'll have to try next time I'm around a piano, very easy to follow along with, thank you so much.

  • For the love of... someone send me sheet music for this.

  • Bloody awesome mate. This is the one song I haven't been able to get out of my head since Crossroads and this version is just as powerful. I don't play piano but I may just have to learn at least this. You wouldn't be able to list chords for guitar would you? Cheers.

  • Hi there, cheers for the comment, sorry for the delay replying, only just been able to upload stuff again.

Made a similar video for the guitar version though, you can see it at /watch?v=rXwDmjefP0M&feature=channel

I'm trying to post it as a video response to this one, at the moment it won't let me, as you do. Hope that helps.

  • Mate! You're a bloody legend! Spent ages looking through other tutorials of this, but yours is easily the most accurate. Tho when its played full speed i think theres an extra C sharp. Anyway helped imeasurably

  • Nice video mate. You won't happen to have the guitar tabs for the crossroads episode electric version by any chance? I would really appreciate it.

  • Hi there, cheers!

Sorry, chronic laziness prevents me from writing tabs, so I made another video like this one, only for the guitar version. Finally managed to upload it, you can see it at /watch?v=rXwDmjefP0M&feature=c hannel

    Hope that helps!
