when I went to public school they taught me what I needed too know and when the test was over we never talked about it again when I went to private school I got to ask questions form relationships with my teachers and actually went into great detail about when where and why things happened not just they happened that is all I actually enjoyed my private school
I believe the standard of teaching should not be lowered so everyone can past the test. I also do not believe that education is correlated to how much money school will get. I think children in XXI century forgot how library looks like. Most of children believe, that they are entitled to get PC, high tech gadgets and everybody forget of what educations is about.
I like NCLB because it holds school's accountable for failing students. if schools dont want to face te consequence of funding cuts then maybe they should actually provide a decent education to their students.
At first I was like, "OH NICE! OBAMA'S GETTIN IN THE GAME!", but then I instantly had a thought. "I bet this is pre-election Obama talking". Yup. Fuck you, Barack, we elected a Progressive Democrat, and got a Moderate Republican.
@gbratboy1 What's funny about this is that the initial NCLB Act has much more to do with progressive liberal politics than conservative ones. The bill was passed with wide bipartisan support, and has been accepted by liberals more than conservatives because it widens the purview of the national government. If you are against Obama because he supports this basic idea--increasing national control of schools--you might want to redefine what you believe 'progressive' and 'republican' to mean
The "Race to the Top" has caused much more harm than good. Greedy teachers and administrators are fighting for recognition and bonuses. White teachers have cheated for years to help white students pass these tests. They simply got copies of the tests and taught what was on them. Blacks teachers joined them in the cheating. They ALL cheat!! We're kidding ourselves if we think they don't. GREED, GREED, GREED! One day, it will all come out in the light. Children aren't robots.

You say Obama is a bad president. What about that dumbass and Inbred wife of his named Bush. Im living proof that NCLBA is a fucked idea. Im tring to get my highschool of ged. Just so I can have a better life. But most of the classe they have nowdays is self taught and Im having troulbe without some there to explain it to me. No Im not dumb some subjects were never my strong point. Do something or more children will continue to get screwed.
In this segment, Obama's main issue with NCLB is the insane requirement that EVERY SINGLE CHILD, regardless of circumstances, must be "proficient" by 2014.
He's right on that point. But he misses the big picture, which is that "achievement" as measured by high-stakes tests is meaningless.
Obama then proposes to use "growth models" (ie "Value Added" Measurement) instead of absolute goals. But if this is still measuring improvements in test scores, it is missing the point.
@lvll138inrs Most merit pay schemes, also based on high-stakes test scores, create the same distortions of education that NCLB does by narrowing the focus on the particular items on the test.
Even if one accepts high-stakes test scores as meaningful, merit-pay systems still have problems. Value Added Modeling does NOT accurately predict which teachers will increase test scores, and giving bonus pay to teachers who can increase test scores is NOT actually effective at increasing test scores.
@halflinks thats so true so many politicians think they know whats best for evry aspect of our lives leave it to the states to figure out whats best foer their schools
Government mandates that require all children to excel at a specific level are totally unrealistic! I am 49, have joined these kids in going back to school and see what they are faced with. It is incredible!!!! They are teaching soooo fast you can't even make notes or even begin to absorb the material. It's all about mandates that require so much is taught in so much time and the teachers don't have time for any quality. A students are now B or C students. B/C students are now D and F students.
By the time Obama is done, he is going down as the most fiscally irresponsible president in history. I have zero respect for anything he has to say. What a mistake!
@CarlosHobbyRC amen... so true... Its not really a race thing though. Its a IQ thing. Which ya has alot to do with race... but that doesn't mean that all lacks and Latinos are dumb. It just means the race as a whole is an underachiever...
Im guessing that most of the children not performing are Mexicans and Blacks!!! Oh yes its a race thing. Just look at schools enrollment diversity and see who is graduating!! Poor schools and their students dont give a shit. They gonna be rappers and athletes and show us day SKILLZ!!! We have got to stop feeling sorry for people that dont even know how to use proper grammer or even can barely speak English.
This guy is a complete ass. Private schools produce our leaders. Public schools produce people that vote for clowns like obama that who provide $ to the non-productive. Don't get me wrong. This no child left behind act is a joke too. Send your kids to private school and you will reap the rewards. Those rewards are not $ for you but a better life for your kids and grandchildren.
@nburnside amen... so true... Its not really a race thing though. Its a IQ thing. Which ya has alot to do with race... but that doesn't mean that all lacks and Latinos are dumb. It just means the race as a whole is an underachiever...
@dadecountyhustler305 So I assume you are a proponent of some psuedoscience like eugenics? IQ? are you serious? Have you ever taken an "intelligence" test? If you knew anything about statndardized testing, you'd know that these tests are wrtitten/formulated at the level of knowledge possessed by the individual(s) who wrote it. I come from a long line of educators and let me inform you, that underachieving characteristics are not inherent. *rolls my eyes* So lame.
This is one of the few times in which I agree with Obama. "No Child Left Behind" sounds like something initiated by a non-educator politician. Furthermore, it doesn't take into account the child's incentive to learn. The plain truth is that not everyone has the drive to succeed.
Absolutely true. My school is a joke. We did not get Science in the first year of high school, we were supposed to take the Algebra Regents, but our teacher said that she wanted us to learn more (garbage) during the years. I feel that I am really lacking on my education, and I feel more retarded than before.
@Darcksaac: Canada is trying to follow the American mistake of test-and-punish. Ontario is taking the lead in that (think EQAO) and the Fraser institute is making it trendy.
Quebec has some structural differences (mandatory high school ends earlier, the transition to college or career is done through CEGEP) from the English Canadian & American systems which help preserve real education there.
high school education isnt the most important thing in life. its a preparation for life and it should be designed with that idea, it is to prepare students up till high school with the standards of a basic education and as the child matures and as each child diversifies their interests high school should be designed to encourage a child and prepare a child to perform proficiently in whatever field they're attracted to. not have a nation of nclb clones that know less than pre-nclb americans.
Well definitely, all children can learn, but not all children come to school equally prepared, and it is extremely difficult, if not impossible for a solo teacher, with limited resources, to create a space where every child will learn successfully.
When some children come to school without breakfast, and others have delicious breakfasts. When some children are read to from birth, and loved, and others are treated to neglect...all will NEVER become equal.
This sounds good, but he's really talking outside of his field of expertise. There're many factors that even an improvement model does not take into account. As an educator, I'm frustrated by the strange phenomenon of people assuming that they can come up with the best thing for kids without any rubber to the road experience in the field. I'm not telling a welder how to put two pieces of metal together, why does everyone think they know better how to do that job I've been trained to do.
@Quizoid because you were trained to do it. i bet i can come up with a better system for how you were taught, too. you're placing blame in your best interest. most people do. because they were trained to. do you see the little cyclical pattern emerging?
I'm certainly not saying that education should not progress. As researchers research and educators teach, they build upon the knowledge of those who came before, while improving and blazing new trails. This is true for most any field. The issue I'm talking about is not progress, but the measuring, defining, and rewarding of that progress from top-down organizations that don't really know what they are looking at or how to measure it.
what the non-educators who mandate the structure of the education system are looking for is opinions and family information. and they get it. and what they measure for is a child's ability to accept change and be molded into an obedient worker. any ACTUAL education you receive in school is superfluous with regards to the intent of those in charge. there has been much research done into the subject and you can read the legislation, most created in the middle sixties by huge corporations.
Real life example: "Equal access to curriculum," sounds good. However, this rule was made by non-educators. The result: I was mandated to teach a low IQ 7th grader who didn't grasp the concept of, "the same," about equilateral triangles. Developmentally, he'd be better served sorting shapes in bins. He is not going to catch up any grades. According to the charts, he will appear to be falling further behind every year. The fast paced system leaves ~him~ behind, not his educators.
@Emrald70 it's called outcome based education. "they will all pass, but they won't all get there at the same time." well, that sounds sort of ok-ish. however, what schools actually test for is a child's attitudes and they are scored on employability and those portfolios are kept by the government and the legislation ordering their creation was written by big business in the sixties when education systems changed to OBE.
m8, i just voiced my opinion, i didn't ask for a detailed account of NCLB
all i think is that there are schools out there where children as young as 6 have no Recess, hours of homework and immense pressure to do well, all for the sake of the school having the best test scores
there's more to life than 2+2, and kids will be leaving school with almost no life skills, and a missed childhood, will they thank the people who told them it was important?
it's fine. i'm all about home-schooling and the newer child-interest-guided education systems some people are doing. public school [and private, the teachers receive training in the same way] is a sham. it forces kids to acclimate to that feeling of pressure, long hours away from their homes, their communities, following orders. and it is extremely effective. mostly because they collect every little personal detail about the child and compile it into a database. public opinion is paramount here.
@Emrald70 That's actually a very good point. Getting them to actually enjoy learning would have a greater effect than any test score. Getting them to enjoy learning would motivate them to spend their lives seeking knowledge, learning, and ultimately growing as a human being.
@Emrald70 i agree with you to a point. i have a son that is ADHD and he gets many resources. not sure if that is due to NCLB. his school is rated one of the best in our district. assuming that is from the test scores. i also feel they are too worried about the scores and not so much on the kids
@Emrald70 learning is supposed to be fun. that's why there are so many tutorial videos on youtube. heck, even kids with bad teachers could actually pass the class if they hit up a youtube video.
@Emrald70 How about Public Education should be about letting Kids set their own Paths(High School).. I think once kids reach High School, They should set their path and daily schedule's for what career they wish to pursue... They should sit down with a counselor who had professed in that same path and figure out a plan with them...
race aside (which really has nothing to do with the law at least), i must ask, are you a teacher? have you worked in the classroom at all in the past 10 years? if you can answer yes to either question, then you'd know that what NCLB does in actuality is lower the expectations to make it look like everyone is succeeding. But if after almost 9 years we still have seniors who read at a 3rd grade level, then NCLB has been ineffective. This affects children of all races, but mostly the poor ones.
@slightlyremoved21 NCLB was a bipartisan bill sponsored by people across the camp from Bush like Edward Kennedy. It was passed 475 yes to 53 no between the Senate and House. Today, President Obama is looking to further incorporate standardized tests nationally with the Race to the Top initiative. I'm not saying I'm a Bush fan, but he's not the one to blame for this; you can't pin that all on one man
There is a very good reason that the concensus of our educators call this the "Every child left behind" bill. Sanitizing and sterilizing the teaching envirionment leaves no room for enrichment. It leaves barely enough time for memorization and regurgitation. I will amend that. It does not leave enough time for even that.
My Child was forced to skip an entire grade because of this CRAP no child left behind they tell me I have no rights as his parent to have any say in what they do with his education at this point CAN ANYBODY TELL ME HOW TO FIGHT THIS???? they have moved him and have set him up to fail What good is this if it is hurting our kids education and not helping
Homeschool is all I can tell you. I feel your pain, I think we've all become way too dependant on public (Government) schools. They will get to the point they will do anything they wish with our kids. I think it's time to get the kids out of the Gov's grasp.
obama is a iqnorant person. i've been in the no child left behind proqram since i wan in the third qrade.. and i have been doinq finee he o[ens his biq ass mouth and dosn't relize what is cominq out... i haye that he bacame presedent all you black people did out there is vote for him because he was black. but look at what happendd...look at this soo called chanq he's brouqht to our country not a damn thinq and there four years are qna be even worse that bush's eiqht years.
Please, when you speak of ignorance, get a good-old-fashioned teacher to red-line your grammer and spelling. Under No child left behind, you have been left totally illiterate.
If you don't like who is in charge, then you can always move out of MY COUNTRY!!!! It is a proven fact the No Child Left Behind Law is a Crock!!!!!!!!!
no child left behind law, is holding the schools more accountable for there actions, by issuing these annualized test the parents will be more informed of there child progress,
the people who choose what school standards are on testing and constint testing, one of those people that make it must know better that it doesn't work
Barack Obama criticizes NCLB as a candidate in this video, but when is the last time he MENTIONED it thus far since Jan. 20th? Maybe I just forgot or missed one of his speeches cuz I surely don't remember. He didn't mention it in the SOTU, did he?
And instead, he signs a bill that gets rid of the DC voucher program, which actually WORKS. What a douche. And Obama has yet to get a bill introduced to keep the vouchers. His own KIDS go to school on dc vouchers, don't they?
The higher ups in the government obviouslyyyy do not want your children to be smart, creative, independent thinkers! Think about it, yeah take a sec. Now google "zeitgeist the movie" and watch it for free on google video. Watch it and your life will never be the same, I promise. I dare you to be gutsy enough to sit through the whole thing and then message me and say it did not fucking rock your world. Go on watch it.
exactly so!!! instead of meeting the standards states have the option of lowering them to say they have met the standards and in doing so they are actually hurting the students more than they're helping them. it's so ironic how this law is called no child left behind, because since the law was implemented, the rate of students being left behind has gone up dramatically.
If kids are not learning ,maybe they should go to school all year, this would also prepare them for the real world, because no job gves you the whole summer off anyway. Also make it a requirement to have a high school diploma to get a drivers licence, this would be a incentive to stay in school, no diploma and you get drive to work rights only.
No Child Left Behind Worked: "Kids Make Gains in Reading, Math Test Scores" MSNBC 4/28/9. 2008 data from National Assessment of Educational Progress: "Results were particularly noticeable on reading. Reading scores tend to lag behind math scores, but in 2008, students in every age group — 9, 13 and 17 — made gains. That hasn't happened since 1975." The scum who runthe teachers union oppose basing anything on performance, and since they're a Democrat interest group, Obama has to criticizeit
Well, you don't have to be a Democrat to oppose it. I'm an education major and a republican and I hate the idea of no child left behind. I absolutely hate it.
consider this, the students making up each "age" group is quite possibly made up of students who were left back in the previous year. So if a 3 grade group us being tested, with 3 students who should be in a 4th grade class, is that testing and "improvement" adequate? NCLB is taking a shit on our kids. it's doing nothing but leaving them behind. and teachers CANNOT be held completely accountable for a students failure or succes; teachers students and PARENTS have to work together
Vianey, I don't see how your claim, if true, changes anything. If they test 9 year olds today vs. 9 yr olds of last year, and this year's 9 year olds beat their test scores, who cares if a few more were held back? It's the same age. Whatever grade they're in, they're better than previous students of the same age, which is great. No Child Left Behind results were rising test scores, especially amongst underachievers and 2008 the first year in 30 to see all age groups reading scores rise.
no, if a child is left behind more than once, for example a 9 yr old left behind in a 4th grade class, by the time he is assessed again through the NCLB testing, he will be 10. The new test will compare a 10 yr old 2 the rest of his classmates who are 9. &there have been cases where children are left behind more than once. So hat happens when the 10 yr old is left behind again, &now he is 11 being assessed by a test designed for 9 yrolds?
Vianey, I can't find any proof for your claim they're comparing 10 yr olds to 9 yr olds. The National Assessment of Educational Progress says it was 9, 13 and 17 year olds compared to previous years same age groups. They're the ones the article cites as the source, and on their website they say all those ages improved since 2004, which article said hadn't happened in 3 decades. Also math scores for 9 and 13 year olds are highest ever. Stats sayNo Child Left Behind worked, we should keep it.
your argument would make more sense if the students were tested at a certain grade 4th 8th 12th and so the 4th graders were 10 and 11 instead of 9, and so had an advantage. But it was testing 9 year olds versus 9 year olds of previous years regardless of grade level.
Granted, in some states assessment has increase, but wat happenes to the children left behind? Check out the stats for the 2,000 3rd graders that were left back for a third time in Miami.
Vianey, I'm sure Miami's a sewer along with many inner city school district's however we need to evaluate the situation on a national basis. The overall stats suggest the program was a success. If you and others have ways to improve it, let's add those, if they also bring results. Holding people accountable seems to have greatly improved performance especially amongst minorities, and underachieving students, says NAEP.
I think NCLB is against the Republican value of "less government control." It's an extremely invasive move into an area that is outside of the policy maker's expertise.
And Vianey, most testing is not done by age or grade. If a child is retained (left behind) then testing him by grade would possibly make him look smarter due to having already done the material. If tested by age, then he usually ends up scoring lower since the age group is all ahead of him.
Most teachers do not like using grade or age scores for this reason. They use standard scores instead. The age and grade scores are there to help the parents better understand.
om obamas sooo right i mean nclb come on its like were like really coool wit out it and plus summer skool sucks no kid wants that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For example: There's a good dentist. All of a sudden, there's a new requirement for dentists everywhere. A professional will have to come in every month for a week, and check the patient's teeth for cavities. If they have too many cavities, and don't meet standards, then the dentist will have his/her liscense tooken away. Now that's how this law works. You can't expect the teacher to go home with the student and make sure they study. I believe this law doesn't have one iota of usefulness.
NCLB is ridiculous. I know that because I'm a student. ALL the teachers disagree with it. All it does is get the teachers behind because the teachers can't teach all we have to learn in a school year. The testing takes away tons of time we could be using to learn. Every year. They want us to improve. If the school doesn't meet the standards, they will fire some teachers, or every student in the school will have to enroll in another school that meets standards. CONTINUED...
Because it is so hard to find a teacher who likes NCLB, either A) Almost all teachers are selfish, or B) There's something wrong. || The idea that teachers, who are really some of the most caring, motivated, educated, and underpaid professionals out there are just trying to serve themselves is insulting in the extreme.
If people were aware of all the angles associated with NCLB they would realize that no matter how Obama tries to dress it, it's "slavery", a method that has been used by anti free countries for centuries with a successful goal of producing robots that are no more valuable than a product on an assembly line. Look up a lecture titled "Who Controls the Children p1 Schools Deliberately Dumb Down"
Our education system was FINE before NCLB. It is a pointless, POINTLESS program. Almost all my teachers disagree with it. My dad made great money and has had a great life off the education he had before NCLB. NCLB is useless. I believe in diversity and excelling at different aspects of life. When everyone ONLY excels and math, english, and science, I guess then that we will have no more poets, singers, guitar players, piano artists, and painters. But instead everyone will be the same = NCLB.
The arts need to be revived in our school systems. It's a shame how schools have prioritized subjects into this whole ladder of importance, throwing arts at the bottom. The arts are part of our culture, and should be treated and funded just as much as science and math programs are. It is statistically proven that children in arts programs do better in school, and flourish in the community as respectable, educated people.
racist is to distinguish a particular race as inferior or characterize all members of a race.
anyway, if you are not able to pass a class, you should be held back and forced to take it again. It would be detrimental to your education to allow you to continue. You will eventually understand less and less of what is going on in the next class, setting you up for failure.
Holding a student back when they cannot, and do not understand course material is what is best for that student.
i want you to know i firmly aggre with you because the students that do not meet the needs of the course need to be caught up and if their schools AYP is really low then put that child in a smaller room with more one on one help and less time for the other ungodly bull that follows when u give a kid thats rambunctious enough free time
Perhaps the statement made by J1999 as indicative of just how far education has fallen. Although, now I wonder if 1999 is their D.O.B., their gradutating year or they just happened to like the number 1999.
"the school system is fucked up shit but with this no child left behind shit this is a free country kids dont have to go to school"
This is a free country, but while you are under the age of 18, you have no rights beyond those given to you by your parents. Stay in school, by your eloquent use of the English language, I can see you truly need it.
Without school, you are promoting incompetence, which will eventually lead to the decline of the American Government due to a broad education gap.
Keep the arts alive in schools. Teaching the visual, performing and musical arts is instrumental in developing critical thinkers. It's a fact that children who play a musical instrument have higher math abilities. The visual arts have been a part of human culture from prehistoric times and is fundamental to the healthy development of all children. Don't let these critically important and valuable programs disappear! SUPPORT THE ARTS.
I am a teacher; this program is the worst thing Bush created. Parents are aloud to decide if they want their child to move to the next grade (even when the teacher does not believe that child is ready) for example: A first grade kid is having problems with reading and math, at the end of the school year parents decide to move him to second grade. The child struggles even more in second grade, they are teaching him new things, he does not know exactly how to read and math becomes more complex!
he doesnt completely go into why no child is left behind, he doesnt really have a significant answer for that, does he? besides the students being excluded because of their race or gender.. thats basically his main answer for that question/statement
I don't get it. Every time a Democrat comes up with some new program to get our educational system out of the gutter, Republicans scream "poverty" about how America can't afford it. Yet turn around and we've got all this money for endless tax cuts for the wealthy and huge subsidies for BIG OIL (reaping RECORD profits every year!). So which is it, Republicans?
We can not change the child's IQ. What's wrong with this is that we think everyone should be able to go to college... when in reality some people really aren't made for college. There is nothing wrong with working right after hs. Not everyone is meant to be a teacher, lawyer, or doctor. But thats what NCLB is implying.Russell is correct about the special children. They sit with a teacher who holds a pencil for them, and they must sit there for the alloted time... at least in Georgia.
Your characterization of special children is ridiculous and prejudiced. I was a "special" child at school and now I am a cum laude graduate from a competitive four year university. The point of having standards is to ensure that everyone is given accessible instruction in the subjects they need to have mastered before going on to college, if they choose to do so. Your characterization of students who, in your mind, don't go onto college, subverts the rights of those with disabilities.
No, I am not talking about "special" children. I was a "special" child in school too, because I was in gifted classes, which is technically special education. I am talking about those who have IQs below 70, which is actually defined as mentally retarded. (special is just a nicer way of saying it). My mom has a masters in MR, mental retardation, and like I said my dad is a principal of a mostly mentally retarded school. A learning disability is much different than being mentally retarded.
Just to let you know. Special is not a nicer way of saying it. It is actually very degrading. Most people who are mentally handicapped know what you mean when you say that and take it offensively. So please watch what you say around people. Just because they are mentally disabled does no mean they do not understand certain things. Just a friendly suggestion from a teacher.
Well, it is called special education now. My mother majored in MR, mental retardation, but it is not called that anymore. Most people I know who have special brothers and sisters get VERY offended if you call them retarded or handicapped.
I am glad to see everyone has a realistic point of view on the situation. Besides our tax dollars paying for these kids to have one on one para-educators walk them around and change their diapers it is completely out of the realm of sanity to think OR imply that these children can pass state learning exams. All the while our federal government threatening us with takeover if we do not meet their standards. Its wrong.
Thank you. I agree that it is wrong, especially if people's jobs are at stake because they can't get a child who can't talk to pass a test that someone of average intelligence is passing.
I think that No Child Left Behind is a good thing because it forces schools to provide their learning disabled students with the same instruction that they provide to non-disabled students. When I was in high school, my school tried to force me not to take Geometry because of my learning disability, and also didn't let me take the standardized tests that showed my poor math ability. My hope is that No Child Left Behind will prevent schools from doing that.
do you also realize that this includes those unfortunate children in a wheel chair with his head cocked sideways and a foaming mouth? It is a system set up to fail
Yes, sir, I do, and I find your characterization of such people as "unfortunate" to be extremely bigoted. Opponents of NCLB always cite this as an alleged problem with the system. No school has been penalized because such children have not met certain standards, as their presence at school involves medical care and activities until they are picked up by thier parents. They usually aren't enrolled in the regular school program. Thus, this is a ludicrous and misleading argument.
My father has been a language arts and math teacher in Distric 68 of Washgington State for more than 30 years. So... how would you like me to address a child in a wheel chair with a crooked hand foaming at the mouth? We had a girl at my school, Donna Starks... went through 4 years of hell during highschool at a public school because her white trash parents thought they were the baby sitter. Everyone made fun of her, she just went "naaahhhhhh" all the time and our senior year she died.
russell-it sounds like the experience bothered you a lot more than it bothered you. You assume that she was in hell, but your description of the situation implies that YOU AND YOUR CLASSMATES were the ones who felt entitled to attend school without coming in contact with such indiviuals and thus 'suffered' by her inclusion.
My father is a principal with a large percentage of students who have IQs below 70 (so they are special needs). These children can't even pick up a pencil, and yet are required to perform at gradelevel. Now, luckily a large percentage are also gifted. His school comes close to "failing" every year because of the NCLB, if it failed 5 years in a row, my Dad would be out of a job... so actually they are penalized, my dad is constantly worrying about it when the time comes. Also, people's IQs
never increase, sometimes they fluctuate about 4 or so points, but generally it is set in stone from the time you are two and up. Therefore, it is stupid to say that these children can and will perform at grade level. If someone has an IQ of 80, so they aren't special ed, they just are not of average equivalence, they will not ever be able to learn at the same pace or level as those who are of average or higher intelligence. The idea is to get everyone to perform at grade level by 2013, but how?
Not bad until the end... "What do we do we lower the states standards" lol so whoever doesnt make it we just lower the standard to make them feel smart? I dont get that at all. My dad is a teacher, has been for 30 years. He said crippled kids in wheel chairs with foam coming out of their mouths are expected to meet the standards as of how it is right now. He also said that after a 2nd or 3rd step of not making it the Fed Gov will take control of your district. Kinda scary dont you guys think?
The act actually says that schools that fail to improve over an extended period of time will be mandated to be fundamentally restructured, which would include reopening the school as a charter school or turning over operations to the state or a private company with a more effective record. The feds don't take over. This isn't really bad for the students. Your dad might be wrong there.
Don't believe that school should pass the child forward. If you are failing in a class, or classes, students should repeat it....without the say of the parents!!!!
Part of the problem with No Child Left Behind, is that like so many other Republican "mandates" is that they lecture down to the states, "meet this standard in such and such amount of time" but they provide little money or resources to meet this standard, leaving the states with a mandate to meet goals but without equipping them (adequately or at all) with the federal dollars to meet these performance goals.
Yes but who is going to provide the money and where is it going to come from? All of the government funded programs are a direct result of borrowed money from the federal reserve. We are 53 trillion dollars in debt and Obama's has not even addressed this issue. Paper money is not real, we lost the gold standard in 65' and our credit bubble is about to pop. The accusations of the FR running our economy is nothing close to a conspiracy. I hope you have some Bullion set aside to hedge the collapse.
I always wondered how Obama felt about this issue. I'm very glad to have come across this. He has a very realistic approach to this issue. The reality today is that public schools are becoming a povertised educational institution. More and more people are sending their children to private schools. The fourth season of The Wire and the HBO Documentary Hard Times at Douglass High are two very good programs that elabroate just how bad this program really is. Score one for Obama on this.
Bush has already let a handful of states operate on an experimental "growth module" program...that's not working either. I vote we flipflop the salaries of politicians and teachers. Either way, try again Obama and hurry.
It appears that the No Child Left Behind law is in fact one of the worst ways the government is affecting education in America. In all honesty, I think we should just change the name to "No Child Gets Ahead," partly due to its emphasis on augmenting mediocrity in the classroom. An unfortunate truth about education is that not every child will learn the same way; children should be grouped and challenged according to their abilities. Yet this program chose a "One Size Fits All" policy.
Kids arnt learning vary well because of this system teacher push students like here in ohio the no child left behind has made OGT (Ohio Graduation test) because u have to pass 5 parts with 400 points or more alot of people like me has failed it by 1 points and sometimes 399.5 points they fail the students and they dotn graduate at all on top of that the teachers presser the studens saying ok we have to prepar for the test always pressing students with if you dont pass you dont graduate BULL SHIT
I agree with you. This particular system isn't working well, but please be careful when you articulate a comment like this. Yes, I realize that there is "text language" where you abbreviate certain words and purposely omit punctuation. As I look at how you've expressed your comments it makes me wonder if education has in a sense failed not only you but other students. We live in a world where a lot of communication is written; you need to be able to express an idea using standard grammar.
i'm sure there alot of people how have but no one is able to do anything about it.. since Obama stands on high grounds now and if he really wants to change it he would be able to...
I worry that if this is adopted, everyone will be so relieved that they will forget that the root of the problem is the student assessment. We need to not merely teacher more, we need to teach better. The current curriculum is very often useless. Multiple-choice is not real thinking. Students know this and parents know this. I'm a teacher and I know this.
If we love our children and want to improve their education we'd cut all funding to public schools and higher education.
Privatization of education has been proven to be successful where the current system has failed.
Our public funds, your tax dollars and mine, shouldn't be going to support one another's beleifs. Give parents their funds to educate their kiddos properly rather than throw that money away into the failed public education system.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Obama's people hate when someone mentions Hussein as Obama's middle name. Isn't it? But Obama is a liar, he doesn't admit his Muslim liaisons & he is a racist as well, the same with his wife who criticizes our nation openly, the same with his demeanor towards our flag and anthem. No Obama, NO WAY! His muslim friends are not going to destroy our nation. The rest of us: Democrats, Republicans & Independents against Barack Hussein Obama.
Im reposting.Anyway the main probem with no child left behind act is that it tests children in groups, allowing the stupid children ride the scores of the smart kids, and the smart kids remaining with the stupid kids. My history class is a perfect example of this and so was my science class last year. It's a failure, all democrats believed so insept Obama. With the no child left behind act you have children not excelling the way they need to or children not getting the extra help they might need.
"Smart" vs. "stupid" -- are you referring to linguistic and logical/mathematical intelligence, i.e. the ones that are primarily tested on assessments? Or are you talking about all kinds of intelligence, in which case "smart" and "stupid" don't really exist? Because standardized testing doesn't come anywhere near measuring intelligence.
to tinker with it? why no just throw it away and later on when we have a more educated population we will look back and say 'wow what were we thinking? '
I am 16 years old and get straight As in my public high school.
I am opposed to No Child Left Behind. It gives students like me more crap to worry about and students that don't do well more reasons to not give a damn about their education.
Hillary's stand on education is better. My reason for watching this video was to compare their views.
when I went to public school they taught me what I needed too know and when the test was over we never talked about it again when I went to private school I got to ask questions form relationships with my teachers and actually went into great detail about when where and why things happened not just they happened that is all I actually enjoyed my private school
TheNewDaySucks 3 months ago
I believe the standard of teaching should not be lowered so everyone can past the test. I also do not believe that education is correlated to how much money school will get. I think children in XXI century forgot how library looks like. Most of children believe, that they are entitled to get PC, high tech gadgets and everybody forget of what educations is about.

I like NCLB because it holds school's accountable for failing students. if schools dont want to face te consequence of funding cuts then maybe they should actually provide a decent education to their students.

gbratboy1 7 months ago

But if this is still measuring improvements in test scores, it is missing the point.

if were going to scrap no child left behind then they should also scrap tenure for public school teachers and install merit pay.
lvll138inrs 10 months ago
@lvll138inrs Most merit pay schemes, also based on high-stakes test scores, create the same distortions of education that NCLB does by narrowing the focus on the particular items on the test.
Even if one accepts high-stakes test scores as meaningful, merit-pay systems still have problems. Value Added Modeling does NOT accurately predict which teachers will increase test scores, and giving bonus pay to teachers who can increase test scores is NOT actually effective at increasing test scores.

GGAlice1 1 year ago

Quizoid 2 years ago
@Quizoid because you were trained to do it. i bet i can come up with a better system for how you were taught, too. you're placing blame in your best interest. most people do. because they were trained to. do you see the little cyclical pattern emerging?
intrepgun 2 years ago
I'm certainly not saying that education should not progress. As researchers research and educators teach, they build upon the knowledge of those who came before, while improving and blazing new trails. This is true for most any field. The issue I'm talking about is not progress, but the measuring, defining, and rewarding of that progress from top-down organizations that don't really know what they are looking at or how to measure it.
Quizoid 2 years ago
what the non-educators who mandate the structure of the education system are looking for is opinions and family information. and they get it. and what they measure for is a child's ability to accept change and be molded into an obedient worker. any ACTUAL education you receive in school is superfluous with regards to the intent of those in charge. there has been much research done into the subject and you can read the legislation, most created in the middle sixties by huge corporations.
intrepgun 2 years ago
Real life example: "Equal access to curriculum," sounds good. However, this rule was made by non-educators. The result: I was mandated to teach a low IQ 7th grader who didn't grasp the concept of, "the same," about equilateral triangles. Developmentally, he'd be better served sorting shapes in bins. He is not going to catch up any grades. According to the charts, he will appear to be falling further behind every year. The fast paced system leaves ~him~ behind, not his educators.

who else here thinks Public education should be about teaching kids to enjoy learning new things and to have an open mind about the world?
and not about getting the best test scores so the school looks good!

THANK YOU for saying this!
tdubblz 2 years ago
@Emrald70 it's called outcome based education. "they will all pass, but they won't all get there at the same time." well, that sounds sort of ok-ish. however, what schools actually test for is a child's attitudes and they are scored on employability and those portfolios are kept by the government and the legislation ordering their creation was written by big business in the sixties when education systems changed to OBE.
intrepgun 2 years ago
m8, i just voiced my opinion, i didn't ask for a detailed account of NCLB
all i think is that there are schools out there where children as young as 6 have no Recess, hours of homework and immense pressure to do well, all for the sake of the school having the best test scores
there's more to life than 2+2, and kids will be leaving school with almost no life skills, and a missed childhood, will they thank the people who told them it was important?
Emrald70 2 years ago
ok, i would like to apologize if my previous comment came off as rude

it's fine. i'm all about home-schooling and the newer child-interest-guided education systems some people are doing. public school [and private, the teachers receive training in the same way] is a sham. it forces kids to acclimate to that feeling of pressure, long hours away from their homes, their communities, following orders. and it is extremely effective. mostly because they collect every little personal detail about the child and compile it into a database. public opinion is paramount here.

@Emrald70 i agree with you to a point. i have a son that is ADHD and he gets many resources. not sure if that is due to NCLB. his school is rated one of the best in our district. assuming that is from the test scores. i also feel they are too worried about the scores and not so much on the kids

race aside (which really has nothing to do with the law at least), i must ask, are you a teacher? have you worked in the classroom at all in the past 10 years? if you can answer yes to either question, then you'd know that what NCLB does in actuality is lower the expectations to make it look like everyone is succeeding. But if after almost 9 years we still have seniors who read at a 3rd grade level, then NCLB has been ineffective. This affects children of all races, but mostly the poor ones.
tdubblz 2 years ago 2
@slightlyremoved21 NCLB was a bipartisan bill sponsored by people across the camp from Bush like Edward Kennedy. It was passed 475 yes to 53 no between the Senate and House. Today, President Obama is looking to further incorporate standardized tests nationally with the Race to the Top initiative. I'm not saying I'm a Bush fan, but he's not the one to blame for this; you can't pin that all on one man

exactly so!!! instead of meeting the standards states have the option of lowering them to say they have met the standards and in doing so they are actually hurting the students more than they're helping them. it's so ironic how this law is called no child left behind, because since the law was implemented, the rate of students being left behind has gone up dramatically.

RuflessRecords 2 years ago
Well, you don't have to be a Democrat to oppose it. I'm an education major and a republican and I hate the idea of no child left behind. I absolutely hate it.
musicalgal123 2 years ago
music, well I like the results. 2008 first year in 30 with reading gains across all age groups.
RuflessRecords 2 years ago
consider this, the students making up each "age" group is quite possibly made up of students who were left back in the previous year.
Vianey112233 2 years ago
Vianey, I don't see how your claim, if true, changes anything. If they test 9 year olds today vs. 9 yr olds of last year, and this year's 9 year olds beat their test scores, who cares if a few more were held back? It's the same age. Whatever grade they're in, they're better than previous students of the same age, which is great. No Child Left Behind results were rising test scores, especially amongst underachievers and 2008 the first year in 30 to see all age groups reading scores rise.
RuflessRecords 2 years ago
no, if a child is left behind more than once, for example a 9 yr old left behind in a 4th grade class, by the time he is assessed again through the NCLB testing, he will be 10. The new test will compare a 10 yr old 2 the rest of his classmates who are 9. &there have been cases where children are left behind more than once. So hat happens when the 10 yr old is left behind again, &now he is 11 being assessed by a test designed for 9 yrolds?
Vianey112233 2 years ago
Vianey, I can't find any proof for your claim they're comparing 10 yr olds to 9 yr olds. The National Assessment of Educational Progress says it was 9, 13 and 17 year olds compared to previous years same age groups. They're the ones the article cites as the source, and on their website they say all those ages improved since 2004, which article said hadn't happened in 3 decades. Also math scores for 9 and 13 year olds are highest ever. Stats sayNo Child Left Behind worked, we should keep it.
RuflessRecords 2 years ago
your argument would make more sense if the students were tested at a certain grade 4th 8th 12th and so the 4th graders were 10 and 11 instead of 9, and so had an advantage. But it was testing 9 year olds versus 9 year olds of previous years regardless of grade level.
RuflessRecords 2 years ago
Granted, in some states assessment has increase, but wat happenes to the children left behind? Check out the stats for the 2,000 3rd graders that were left back for a third time in Miami.
Vianey112233 2 years ago
Vianey, I'm sure Miami's a sewer along with many inner city school district's however we need to evaluate the situation on a national basis. The overall stats suggest the program was a success. If you and others have ways to improve it, let's add those, if they also bring results. Holding people accountable seems to have greatly improved performance especially amongst minorities, and underachieving students, says NAEP.
RuflessRecords 2 years ago
I think NCLB is against the Republican value of "less government control." It's an extremely invasive move into an area that is outside of the policy maker's expertise.

Agreed Quizoid.

I believe this law doesn't have one iota of usefulness.
isabella293 2 years ago 2
NCLB is ridiculous. I know that because I'm a student. ALL the teachers disagree with it. All it does is get the teachers behind because the teachers can't teach all we have to learn in a school year. The testing takes away tons of time we could be using to learn. Every year. They want us to improve. If the school doesn't meet the standards, they will fire some teachers, or every student in the school will have to enroll in another school that meets standards. CONTINUED...
isabella293 2 years ago
Because it is so hard to find a teacher who likes NCLB, either A) Almost all teachers are selfish, or B) There's something wrong. || The idea that teachers, who are really some of the most caring, motivated, educated, and underpaid professionals out there are just trying to serve themselves is insulting in the extreme.

Non-traditional & Free schools for the win! Abolish NCLB and conventional education. Educational institutions should not be run like dictatorships.

It is statistically proven that children in arts programs do better in school, and flourish in the community as respectable, educated people.

kids should have to pass the grade even though they have problems it is racist to the people with mental problems
J1999 3 years ago
.... what?
racist is to distinguish a particular race as inferior or characterize all members of a race.
anyway, if you are not able to pass a class, you should be held back and forced to take it again. It would be detrimental to your education to allow you to continue. You will eventually understand less and less of what is going on in the next class, setting you up for failure.
Holding a student back when they cannot, and do not understand course material is what is best for that student.
absentmindedjwc 3 years ago
i want you to know i firmly aggre with you because the students that do not meet the needs of the course need to be caught up and if their schools AYP is really low then put that child in a smaller room with more one on one help and less time for the other ungodly bull that follows when u give a kid thats rambunctious enough free time

Perhaps the statement made by J1999 as indicative of just how far education has fallen. Although, now I wonder if 1999 is their D.O.B., their gradutating year or they just happened to like the number 1999.

School does not have enough money to hire more teachers to help these kids. The problem gets bigger. Education should be a priority!!!!
lily19cz 3 years ago
I am a teacher; this program is the worst thing Bush created. Parents are aloud to decide if they want their child to move to the next grade (even when the teacher does not believe that child is ready) for example: A first grade kid is having problems with reading and math, at the end of the school year parents decide to move him to second grade. The child struggles even more in second grade, they are teaching him new things, he does not know exactly how to read and math becomes more complex!
lily19cz 3 years ago 4
he doesnt completely go into why no child is left behind, he doesnt really have a significant answer for that, does he? besides the students being excluded because of their race or gender.. thats basically his main answer for that question/statement

They sit with a teacher who holds a pencil for them, and they must sit there for the alloted time... at least in Georgia.
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
Your characterization of special children is ridiculous and prejudiced. I was a "special" child at school and now I am a cum laude graduate from a competitive four year university. The point of having standards is to ensure that everyone is given accessible instruction in the subjects they need to have mastered before going on to college, if they choose to do so. Your characterization of students who, in your mind, don't go onto college, subverts the rights of those with disabilities.
Progo35 3 years ago
No, I am not talking about "special" children. I was a "special" child in school too, because I was in gifted classes, which is technically special education. I am talking about those who have IQs below 70, which is actually defined as mentally retarded. (special is just a nicer way of saying it). My mom has a masters in MR, mental retardation, and like I said my dad is a principal of a mostly mentally retarded school. A learning disability is much different than being mentally retarded.
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
Just to let you know. Special is not a nicer way of saying it. It is actually very degrading. Most people who are mentally handicapped know what you mean when you say that and take it offensively. So please watch what you say around people. Just because they are mentally disabled does no mean they do not understand certain things. Just a friendly suggestion from a teacher.
zoegirl134 3 years ago
Well, it is called special education now. My mother majored in MR, mental retardation, but it is not called that anymore. Most people I know who have special brothers and sisters get VERY offended if you call them retarded or handicapped.
I guess it could vary from person to person.
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
I am glad to see everyone has a realistic point of view on the situation. Besides our tax dollars paying for these kids to have one on one para-educators walk them around and change their diapers it is completely out of the realm of sanity to think OR imply that these children can pass state learning exams. All the while our federal government threatening us with takeover if we do not meet their standards. Its wrong.
russellt118 3 years ago
Thank you. I agree that it is wrong, especially if people's jobs are at stake because they can't get a child who can't talk to pass a test that someone of average intelligence is passing.
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
I think that No Child Left Behind is a good thing because it forces schools to provide their learning disabled students with the same instruction that they provide to non-disabled students. When I was in high school, my school tried to force me not to take Geometry because of my learning disability, and also didn't let me take the standardized tests that showed my poor math ability. My hope is that No Child Left Behind will prevent schools from doing that.
Progo35 3 years ago
do you also realize that this includes those unfortunate children in a wheel chair with his head cocked sideways and a foaming mouth? It is a system set up to fail
russellt118 3 years ago
Yes, sir, I do, and I find your characterization of such people as "unfortunate" to be extremely bigoted. Opponents of NCLB always cite this as an alleged problem with the system. No school has been penalized because such children have not met certain standards, as their presence at school involves medical care and activities until they are picked up by thier parents. They usually aren't enrolled in the regular school program. Thus, this is a ludicrous and misleading argument.
Progo35 3 years ago
My father has been a language arts and math teacher in Distric 68 of Washgington State for more than 30 years. So... how would you like me to address a child in a wheel chair with a crooked hand foaming at the mouth? We had a girl at my school, Donna Starks... went through 4 years of hell during highschool at a public school because her white trash parents thought they were the baby sitter. Everyone made fun of her, she just went "naaahhhhhh" all the time and our senior year she died.
russellt118 3 years ago
russell-it sounds like the experience bothered you a lot more than it bothered you. You assume that she was in hell, but your description of the situation implies that YOU AND YOUR CLASSMATES were the ones who felt entitled to attend school without coming in contact with such indiviuals and thus 'suffered' by her inclusion.
Progo35 3 years ago
My father is a principal with a large percentage of students who have IQs below 70 (so they are special needs). These children can't even pick up a pencil, and yet are required to perform at gradelevel. Now, luckily a large percentage are also gifted. His school comes close to "failing" every year because of the NCLB, if it failed 5 years in a row, my Dad would be out of a job... so actually they are penalized, my dad is constantly worrying about it when the time comes. Also, people's IQs
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
never increase, sometimes they fluctuate about 4 or so points, but generally it is set in stone from the time you are two and up. Therefore, it is stupid to say that these children can and will perform at grade level. If someone has an IQ of 80, so they aren't special ed, they just are not of average equivalence, they will not ever be able to learn at the same pace or level as those who are of average or higher intelligence. The idea is to get everyone to perform at grade level by 2013, but how?
ohhyeahhgirlll 3 years ago
Not bad until the end... "What do we do we lower the states standards" lol so whoever doesnt make it we just lower the standard to make them feel smart? I dont get that at all. My dad is a teacher, has been for 30 years. He said crippled kids in wheel chairs with foam coming out of their mouths are expected to meet the standards as of how it is right now. He also said that after a 2nd or 3rd step of not making it the Fed Gov will take control of your district. Kinda scary dont you guys think?
russellt118 3 years ago
The act actually says that schools that fail to improve over an extended period of time will be mandated to be fundamentally restructured, which would include reopening the school as a charter school or turning over operations to the state or a private company with a more effective record. The feds don't take over. This isn't really bad for the students. Your dad might be wrong there.
dnno1 3 years ago
Don't believe that school should pass the child forward. If you are failing in a class, or classes, students should repeat it....without the say of the parents!!!!
4njktube 3 years ago
Part of the problem with No Child Left Behind, is that like so many other Republican "mandates" is that they lecture down to the states, "meet this standard in such and such amount of time" but they provide little money or resources to meet this standard, leaving the states with a mandate to meet goals but without equipping them (adequately or at all) with the federal dollars to meet these performance goals.

obamabideno8 3 years ago
Yes but who is going to provide the money and where is it going to come from? All of the government funded programs are a direct result of borrowed money from the federal reserve. We are 53 trillion dollars in debt and Obama's has not even addressed this issue. Paper money is not real, we lost the gold standard in 65' and our credit bubble is about to pop. The accusations of the FR running our economy is nothing close to a conspiracy. I hope you have some Bullion set aside to hedge the collapse.
russellt118 3 years ago
I always wondered how Obama felt about this issue. I'm very glad to have come across this. He has a very realistic approach to this issue. The reality today is that public schools are becoming a povertised educational institution. More and more people are sending their children to private schools. The fourth season of The Wire and the HBO Documentary Hard Times at Douglass High are two very good programs that elabroate just how bad this program really is. Score one for Obama on this.
Crazy88Gorilla 3 years ago 2
Bush has already let a handful of states operate on an experimental "growth module" program...that's not working either. I vote we flipflop the salaries of politicians and teachers. Either way, try again Obama and hurry.
liljosays 3 years ago

AMEN!
The current system is ineffective.

With the no child left behind act you have children not excelling the way they need to or children not getting the extra help they might need.
guylovesme 4 years ago
