For me Cynic and BTBAM are both the best progressive bands right now. I like BTBAM cause they are heavier than the others, and they do know how to make beautiful music. Cynic is more like the technical band. They're songs require a lot of skill to be played, but they're not as heavy as BTBAM. Anyway, the members of both bands are great musicians and should stay that way. Cause i want to fucking see them live.
i doubt any of these new bands that do imitate the style can come close to imitate the emotion. i can tell you from the bottom of my heart when i saw cynic i died and grew that day. cynic is just in a whole another level all together.
I saw them in LA at House of Blues a few weeks ago, and thought they were the best band! Cynic is awesome. Their music is unique. They're all great musicians.
I didn't think they were lame.. they're a great band, but definitely didn't get the crowd going as the 3 others did. I was talking to a few guys in line, and they said they were there just to see Cynic, and have never heard of BTBAM. Overall, they put on a great show, but it was kind of a transition to the epic-ness that was to come of BTBAM.
BTBAM wouldn't exist without the influence of Cynic. Though sadly, their songs didn't get everyone pumped, so the narrow-minded probably threw them off as yoga-posers.
@ruinawish Listen to Selkies. You can definitely hear the Cynic in there (and no, I'm not just referring to the vocoder at that one part). BTBAM may be more Dream Theater-ish, but I meant without the influence of the early progressive metal/rock bands (Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence, Death, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc.) BTBAM certainly wouldn't be the band that they are.
@ruinawish Also. As their Wikipedia page says: "His vocal style combines death growls and screams with peaceful, sometimes falsetto singing melodies, somewhat similar to Paul Masvidal of Cynic's vocal style."
@TheAJMetal Fair enough lad. Still, in my mind, Cynic are a one-of-a-kind band - those who resemble Cynic are imitating, rather than being influenced by. P.S. don't rely on wikipedia to back your statements.
@ruinawish I have read literally dozens of interviews of people who are influenced by Cynic over the years. You might be suprised. I dont think many bands want to emulate their sound but do respect them greatly.

@TheAJMetal Mmm... Cynic are great, but I don't think they've influenced many other artists. I see more Dream Theater in BTBAM.
