Ah,my ICON! As well as the BEATLES.Elton john who I did see in concert, 21 yrs after this came out.There is a story behind these two Brilliant artists,and this song. Back in "74" john was humming and then started to say to Elton..Whatever get's you through the night man.Then he basically, (john) got on the piano,made up this rif and..the song. John told Elton,"It will never even touch the Billboards" Elton told him,Ya it will.it ill go to #1.And said"When it does,I'll go on tour w/you"It wz #1 !

@eltonator The crowd may have been surprised but not Elton and his crew...first of all, Lennon previously agreed to appear onstage with Elton if "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" reached #1, which it did. Second, Elton does a long intro before Lennon comes on. Third, the band just happened to have 3 songs prepared for him to sit in. Also there were reports that say the crowd had heard rumors about a Beatle possibly sitting in that night. Seems unlikely that he just showed up unannounced.

Amazing begining of him being re-born to the enigmatic live performer that he was. Such a tragic stop in what would of been brilliant. But life is what it is and he truely inspires me in what human graceness exists.

This was a bet John lost to Elton.....lollll

John never tought he had a hit song with this number....Elton told him that if it became a number one hit Lennon would have to get on stage with him to play it, with other numbers....So he lost and did it as always with grace and such great talent he was.....Too bad nobody has a video of it....I mean the real performance live.......

They kind of portrayed it in a movie about john. I think it was called the Ballad of john and Yoko or something like that.

Yeah what a surprise.....I saw pictures of this event I had the 12'' single of it, where they played Wathever get's you throught the night, Lucy in the sky with diamond and I saw her standing there ( where Lennon introduce it as ''a song from an old fiance of mine''..........). Oh what a show it must have been for those who expected to see Elton live ( but not with John) that night.....

Yet John apparently didn't feel fine, or he wouldn't have said "so I can get out of here, and be sick" (before I Saw Her Standing There.) [B-side of Philadelphia Freedom by the way.]

This song came out when I came out of the Navy and became my motto on religion and life in general. I no longer was judgmental of people. Whatever got them through the night I accepted. A major influence on me.
