Awesome review man..BUT...I just have one important question....I wanna get the Sony Blu-Ray player with Google TV built in and hook it up to my Comcast/Xfinity Cable DVR box...I dont think that my girlfriend will wanna make the change to google TV, so would she just be able to use the regular remote for the DVR cable box without having to unhook the Google TV Blu-Ray player to make it normal for her?? Please answer me on this one man, I'd really appeciate it!! Thanks!
The problem people have with this is they expect it to sub for their laptops and desk tops which it isnt trying to do. Stop bitching about you will just hook your laptop up to your tv because thats doing nothing but making your tv a big ass monitor which is ok but the total opposite of what googleTV and Smart TVs are. Its TV its a way to bring more content to your tv instead of just cable. Cable+NetFlix+Amazon+Youtube and all the other media is a win to me.
i dont like the new version. it only lets me see the full size screen on you tube videos wich is lame i have no control. i can not make any coments like before I HATE IT. i call to see if sony can fix it they said NO... I SPEND ALL THAT MONEY FOR A TV I CAN NOT CONTROL.... LOL... great.. next time i will buy a cheaper plasma and hook it to my pc..
I like the pop up notifications when pandora changes songs. My sister really likes the dragon version if tinywings. Unfortunately, that was the only game I found That actually worked well.
i hate the youtube app. i cant access my account, i really liked the desktop version ten billion times better. please sony google or youtube change it :(
Interesting, but I see it somewhat like you do now, as an exotic toy with much room to grow. I like both of my Sony TVs, but I wouldn't pay money to Googlize one.
I don't know what's with the YouTube apps for TV, but virtually all of them, for every brand, are a complete fail. Like you point out, they're so minimal as to be essentially useless. You can get YouTube's preprogrammed crap that nobody wants, and that's about all. You'd think Google, of all of them, could do better. Guess not...
That could be it. YouTube's "product team," under the guise of Google, is focused on getting people to watch videos and watch more videos, like a nonstop TV feed, and any interactions and decision making on our part disrupt that. God forbid we waste any watching time thinking for ourselves. You see that in the way they're trying to turn YouTube into one giant playlist. And it's NOT working, because it's NOT what YouTube is about. Trouble is, the people designing it don't use YouTube.
@Urgo6667 I totally understand your criticism of the new YouTube app for the 3.1 HoneyComb update. The app is not as useful as you might think. However you can always browse the full YouTube web site in the Chrome web browser. You certainly won't be deprived of any web site functionality. Why would you want an app for YouTube if it just mimics everything on the site anyway? It seems to me the app was designed to allow you to lean back and watch, not interact. Just use Chrome to interact.
Urgo, no one cares about Google tvs lol you are a pawn in a marketing scheme for a product that never took off, now you are still making videos about it lol
Wow, couldn't be more relevant! We were JUST talking about possibly getting a Smart TV so we can watch Netflix and YouTube on our bedroom tv without having to hook up another Wii system.
@KittiesMama If you're looking at getting a new tv it definitely has a lot more going for it then a wii does... well unless you were wanting to play wii games at least :)
Fine... I guess... but what I'd like & so far as I know NOBODY makes or is thinking about... would be (?) a Google/Apple(Mac) conceptual hookup, where I'd be able to get my local off-air HDTV and local digital radio signals, and internet via air-card... but smarter.
Now, with my off-air HDTV, I get about half the available channels 'cause the aerial is passive and dumb (not smart). I can stream radio, but it disconnects unpredictably... and my internet slows down to: STOP, at about 9:00 p.m.
@voyeurdug This is basically the setup I have right now. The basic cable I'm getting is basically the over the air stuff I could get with an antenna and the rest (on this tv at least) I do is from netflix and other web stuff like youtube.
I AGREE with you on waiting for a while to see what might be coming down the pike on Google TV. When it takes off, oh WOW is it going to be good, and it will be the Hot Item! VERY! = ))
YES I want one of these!!! I have since the day you got it! Recently I went to my Cable Store, and went in to ask them how I can get internet on my TV, and they kind of laughed @ me. They said as of now it was only NetFlix via Xbox and a Google TV that was available now, but might be cheaper after Christmas. After watching your videos I suppose I had thought that anyone could get the hookup with a HDMI Cable. LOL! I saw you have Zillow :) Thanks for showing us what's up! : ) Yay for Updates!
@notellyearight1 lol yeah I tried zillow yesterday too. I wanted to see how drag and scrolling the map would work.. and the answer is.. not very well. I mean I can make it work but its pretty difficult. When I got my other TV I got a ps3 so I could watch movies and netflix and stuff and that works great too. There are a lot of features I like about google tv though that it can't do, but its not something I'd throw out the tv for to have, but good for a new one!
Google TV looks interesting. I'd rather get a Boxee for my money but I would take a free Google TV anyday. Eventually my Dell Studio Hybrid will turn into a media center. :)
It is surprising how basic the YouTube app is. I wonder if they are not just leaving room for app developers. Overall the update looks nice. They have a nice seamless integration and that is what people want.

@anmoose I think Google thinks in order to be more tv like they need to remove all the features and let it just play videos. They are wrong.
