I was 9 years old and sitting in the stands off of turn 4 when this happened in 1984 during one of the Twin 125's. I still remember how hard the hit sounded when the cars flat bottomed the old dirt embankment.
Just Heard Randy On Sirius. He Said When He Was Pulled Out Of The Car, He Couldn't Breathe... Randy Said They Pulled A Clump Of Grass "Big As A Softball" Out Of His Mouth.

He could easily have died. A chunk of his helmet was taken off on the way to a serious concussion. Story was his car was real fast. He was passing cars. Only problem was the closing speed as he came up on Dale Jr. He made a choice to cut the wheel left instead of maybe turning Dale.
If Randy didn't crash that day? At his age and talent he may have had a successful GN/Cup career.
Later won BGNN, back to Daytona but wrecked 2x in Qual races (won Consi). Later won Busch crown and BGN Daytona.
1983 daytona 500 darrell was racing to the caution flag to get a lap back in a brand spankin new Pepsi "challenger" Monte Carlo SS and a slow car moved in front of him and DW lost it trying to avoid the slow car and nailed the wall head-on. DW cant remember a thing from the first half of the '83 season.
how did he not die from that

glad that they replaced those dirt banks with safe, durable walls that absorb some of the impact. There would worse crashes if they hadn't.

Was that Busch Clash?

Gatorade Duels were called Twin 125s back then.

Who owned this #07 car that Randy LaJoie was driving for?
TheCougarFrom1983 3 years ago 3
According to racing reference. Bob Johnson
He only entered 3 races (1 in 85' and 2 in 86' With Randy Lajoie and Morgan Shepherd in the 86' Daytona 500
3fan4eva 3 years ago 2
Bob Johnson owned the #17 Modified on the Mod Tour for years Randy's father Don drove for him and put this deal together.

WoW! I wish we still had wrecks like that today. That looks like fun, I wish I could get a chance and drive a NASCAR and take a wild ride like that.

Its a good thing he hit on the bottom of his car, otherwise he might have ended up like Greg Moore, RIP. Thank God he survived.

The most strategically placed wall in the history of Nascar. It got Lajoie, Darrell Waltrip, some ARCA guys, almost got Ricky Rudd in 84...

Got Phil Finney as well.

Very similar crash to LaJoie's. Scary stuff.
LouisMenchise 2 years ago
That wreck was kind of similar to Ricky Rudd's crash in the Busch Clash that very same year.
ejs1978 4 years ago
Maybe somewhat because of the spot they both crashed at but Rudd never hit the wall when LaJoie did, plus Rudd had alot more of a violent flip.
