  • I don't like 3-D movies because I can not physiacally see much, if not all, of the 3-D effects. My left eye can hardly see if you want an explantion.

  • This is an awesome idea! Thanks, Hank.

  • Thanks so much for these glasses. I recently bought them for me and my family and I love them

  • 30 million people.....thats almost the population of Canada...O.o

  • Why didn't I find out about these earlier?! I could have saved myself from like three headaches!

  • when I watch 3D movies everything is 2D. I wear the 3D glasses but because I have eye problems the images come out as if I'm watching a 2D movie. It's sort of makes me angry that I have to pay extra money to go to a 3D movie and use 3D glasses only see it in 2D. However maybe I am seeing the movie in 3D and I just don't know it because I'm so use to seeing everything as if it were 2D. Due to a lack of depth perception I can't tell how far away things are so maybe my brain just isn't getting it?

  • @TheMinisips I think you would know, especially with some of the better 3D movies. 2D vs 3D is a big difference.

  • It isn't that I want to learn to watch them without feeling ill, it's that I never seem to take the lesson that 3D and IMAX make me feel that way to heart. I still see things like Great Barrier Reef in IMAX and want to see them, completely failing to remember how much I always regret it. It's a mistake I rather embarrassingly never seem to learn from.

  • I'm pretty sure you NEVER forget to be awesome.

    EVER.

  • I'm part of that 10% of America that can't sit through a 3D Movie. I also bought the 2D glasses before Harry Potter pt.2 came out. (I was at LeakyCon and ended up getting the 3D tickets by accident.)

  • I find it kinda frustrating that 3D movies make me sick. So do IMAX 2D ones for that matter, but I never seem to learn this. My brain wants to like 3D but the rest of me is so not keen. The glasses are a brilliant idea for those of us who never learn.

  • @TheGFeather Actually, it's probably not something that you can learn; it's probably biological. Human eyes see at about 15fps; that's what we're used to taking information at, & our brain knows how to gloss over the 'frames' so it looks natural to us. Movies nowadays run at @ least 64fps, & 3D movies run at 64fps w/ 2 different camera angles. So, some people's eyes can't handle the flashing; it's just too much info too fast. So there ya go, not your fault!

  • Portal poster was the first thing i noticed

  • I'll take a time machine please.

  • made on my birthday!

  • This is the first one of your videos that I ever watched. That was about 6 months ago. Best subscription I even made (or clicked.)

  • lol i thought it was a joke when i saw the title, but this actually does make sense...of course it would make more sense to just buy the cheaper film ticket and watch in 2D ;) xx

  • I just realized, 10% of America is the same number of people as 86% of Canada...

  • Hey! You have a Portal 2 poster! Sweet!

  • This happens to me. It sometimes makes me pass out and I miss the movie.

  • Now I wish that 3D gave me headaches so I could wear these glasses.

Also, I hope the guys who makes 3D glasses actually dress like that.

  • excellent i will take 5,000

  • That is actually a really good idea...

  • Actual physical literal RAGE? Like I'M IN A RAGE? That type of rage?

Oh. That's a lot of rage.

  • I never knew - is hyphen. Thats awesome. I love saying hyphen HYPHEN HYPHEN!

  • wow 10% of Americans=30 million people=the population of my dear country, Canada. so that means the amount of people who get headaches from 3D movies is the same as the population of Canada....

  • @xcskier999 And Canada is actually bigger than The United States Of America!

  • @purpleprincess911 The size of Canada is bigger, but we have a much smaller population.

  • @xcskier999 there is more Americans with an eating disorder than the population of Canada

  • They will work with LG Flicker free TV's...

  • Buying these for the Star Wars re-release. Woo!

  • Oh my god... thank you so much, I will be picking up a pair of these soon! Oh fantastico! :D

  • I have amblyopia so i can't even see the 3D effect. I just get a headachey 2D movie ¬¬

  • WHERE DID YOU GET THAT PORTAL 2 POSTER?? Please tell me!! I really want one!

  • the poster...... love it

  • Yeah, i cant watch 3D movies. I went to see avatar and all i did was stare at fuzzy blue smurfs for 2 hours

  • couldnt you just like take the glasses from the theater and put 2 left or 2 right lenses and put them in the same pair???

  • Couldn't one just wear polarized sunglasses? These seem like they FTBA a little...

  • @TortoiseWrath If that does work they'd probably be just as if not more expensive AND they'd make the image darker

  • @lilsamich47 The way that the 3D technology works is for one of the lenses to be polarized horizontally, and the other vertically. Half of the light is horizontally polarized, and goes to one eye, and the other half is vertically polarized, and goes to the other eye. With both 2D glasses and polarized sunglasses, both lenses are polarized in the same direction, meaning that this polarized light must be divided in half; thus, both 2D glasses and sunglasses decrease image brightness.

  • @lilsamich47 Besides, lots of people have polarized sunglasses in the first place.

  • @lilsamich47 Okay, I just checked, and the 2D glasses are, in fact, less expensive. And I just realized what you meant about making the image darker. But the VERSATILITY!

(I apologize for my use of conjunctions to initiate sentences. I am just excited, and cannot think about grammar.)

  • I was just reading a magazine full of smart things and articles called Mental Floss. I saw a page about cool glasses and your 2D glasses were there! It made me smile reading your name and remembering how awesome you are. It also said you deserve an Oscar (I agree)

  • pay for 3D watch 2D wtf

  • @clarifaxon Sometimes 2Ds are not available, so you have to watch it in 3D. That's the purpose of these glasses.

  • Tron shouldn't have been much of a problem since half the movie wasn't in 3D anyway, but Disney still charged us for a full price 3D movie. Ugh.

  • I just remembered what my first video watch of you guys was: THIS! As a member of the "my eyes hurt so much they want to divorce me" when I watch 3-D movies, THANK YOU for making those!!

  • Saw this video and rushed to buy two pairs. Thank you, Hank!!~ ^.^

  • I have absolutly no use for these but I still think it's a genius idea :D

  • I do know that this video was made quite a few months ago, but there are some televisions out now that use the 3D technology that the Movie Theaters use.

  • Fighting world suck, even the little sucks like 3-D movie headaches. You never forget to, but DFTBA anyhow.

  • There is only 2662 glasses left :O

  • such a good idea. thank you. i dislike 3D because it makes me disoriented. and i also don't like having 6 eyes.

  • @JulesCoxie I do believe there are some glasses that you can custom order to fit over the glasses you are already wearing. (Yes, I know what you mean by 6 eyes)

  • You know what else is a great idea? Going to see a 2D movie instead. You pay WAY less, don't have to wear glasses that make you look like a hipster, AND you don't get the headache of 3D.

2D glasses, to me, are like the DVD Rewinder. Very fucking useless. If any theater is worth a shit, it'll have the 2D and 3D version of the same movie. From what I'm noticed with my personal theater, they start and end at roughly the same time.

Which makes 2D glasses even more useless.

  • @SeanTheOriginal but if you're going with someone who wants to see the movie in 3D, you would have to watch it separately

  • 3d is very annoying if you have glasses.

  • I don't like 3D because then I have to wear two pairs of glasses one upon the other B( that's very annoying

  • @RaccoonInACocoon

Find a pair of clip on shades and some 3D glasses and pop the lenses out of both. Then attach the 3D lenses to the shades, so that when you go to the cinema you can just clip the shades to your normal glasses :)

  • @Qw3rtypop XD thanks

  • I was scrolling around on thinkgeek and saw the 2D glasses before I became a Nerdfighter, so figuring out Hank was the person who created them heightened the awesome level of those glasses to above-the-charts-awesome.

  • My mom pointed these out to me in a thinkgeek catalog recently, and I was like "OMG 2-D GLASSES!!!" My mother was confused.

  • I just saw a little blurb in the latest issue of mental_floss congratulating Hank on his grand invention: the 2D movie glasses. This is the first time I've heard anything about them outside of the internet, so I figured congratulations were in order. Way to go, Hank!!! :D

  • Hipster Sunglasses

  • Hank you are my hero. The pain I was in after Avatar. Made me afraid to ever see a 3D movie again. However for some crazy (probably money making) reason. Some movies I want to see are only available in 3D. While I feel them doing that is outrageous and somewhat discriminatory. Your 2D glasses give me the option I couldn't risk before. Thank you and everyone involved so much.

  • Man, I get terrible headaches from 3D movies, magical idea!

  • @allieXwa113 super fail o_o... If she can only see through 1 eye, then by using the normal 3d glasses, it would only filter out one portion, making it 2d. Theres no point to buy these 2d glasses :/ Facepalm. I'm not flaming or anything, just saying that there would be no difference had you bought these or had you not, she would either way see it in 2d wearing either set of glasses... And your generation mocks our generation...

  • "I made a thing!!!"

  • oh my, so much work just to start. hmm, that worries me about my craxy projects will be more work. :( dont like paper work or legal stuff 4 dat matter

  • you did this...for your wife..i could cry. that's awesome.

  • @SamPow98 oh... Thanks, haha, that makes so much more sense, I feel really stupid now..

  • hello

  • these....these are amazing O_O

  • What I don't understand is... why wouldn't you just buy a ticket for a regular 2D movie? D:

  • @esquiggle because 2D movies are becoming more and more obsolete

  • I think this is the most clever and original invention I've seen in a long while. Like seriously...

  • WHAT???? INUYASHA POSTER???????????? But all the girls at school told me it wasn't cool anymore....like 5 years ago. I LOVE YOU HANK.

  • I can't watch 3d movies cause I have a lazy eye and literally can't focus with those fucking glasses.

  • Now make 8 bit glasses... and 8 bit audio converter earpieces while you're at it.

  • OMG!! I FOUND OUT ABOUT 2D GLASSES A LONG TIME AGO FROM PHILLYD BEFORE I WAS A NERDFIGHTER/KNEW ABOUT NERDFIGHTARIA!!! IT IS SO AWESOME THAT YOU WERE THE ONE THAT MADE THEM!!!! :DDDDD

  • I love the Portal 2 poster. ^_^

  • My family tries to avoid the 3D movies; we don't feel that the price jump from 2D is worth it. :P

  • whos this monkey?

  • thanks Hank! for some reason my step-mom always thought i hated her, but after i bought her these for her birthday she was like "awww! thanks *insert my name here*! now we can all go see 3d movies together again!"....thus making our relationship as stepmother and stepdaughter better! thanks HANK!!!

  • Droid X :D

  • Portal 2 poster makes this video worth watching.

  • YOU'RE GONNA BE RICH!!!

  • I just promoted your glasses! My old boss posted on fb that she didn't go to a 3d movie with her daughter and husband because "3d and verdigo don't go together."

  • Now, can you make something for people with glasses? :D

I always have to hold up my 3D glasses over my regular glasses so it doesn't fall :(

  • I've been trying to remember when I became a Nerdfighter for ages. I saw this video at the side of youtube whilst I was watching Humpy Hank and I realised that this was the video on the front page of the Ning when I first discovered Nerdfighteria, therefore pinning the date that I joined those who are made of awesome to the middle of April. THIS MAKES ME VERY HAPPY. :D

  • ThinkGeek stole your idea ):

  • @Emishly No, I think he published it in Think Geek, it doesnt say "invented at thinkgeek" by it, so yay for hank?

  • @Bosoxgalaxy Hopefully

  • or you know...just go to the 2D version of the movie...

  • Thats me, headaches and my nose hurts because I'm not used to wearing glasses

  • 3d movies make me get extremely motion sick, but my theater doesn't play in 3d so we always just go there, but I'm thinking I'll invest in a pair of these for whenever I go to regular theaters :)

  • @mrclassxd Dear person, just because you don't like something, does not mean that other people don't need it. So stop being a giant squid of anger please.

  • Portal 2 poster :3 I love Atlas... P-body is okay I suppose too...

  • If you think about Katherine said she didn't like 3-d movies cause she gets a headache thus Hank created 2-d glasses, a whole new invention so she wouldn't have this problem anymore, Katherine is very lucky to have Hank as a husband, I wanna boyfriend that'll make new inventions to prevent any pain i might have :(

  • I read about this. Awesome! This is progressive.

  • I discovered yesterday that I do, in fact, need 2D glasses... However, the pain may have been caused by the awfulness that is the Smurfs movie.

  • I would rather have movies and TV smell than have them be 3d.

  • Its good to know I'm not the only one who gets angry from 3D movies

  • I have one right beside me, I got them from the theaters in CA. nice huh? You are genius!

  • This is genius!

The films you want to see aren't always available at the cinemas in 2D. I really wanted to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and as the only one of the Harry Potter films this was only shown in 3D at my local cinema. I was bummed about it because it costs more and because I had seen all the other HP films in 2D so why this one in 3D? I know people who get head aches from watching 3D and we should still be able to go see the a film together.

  • I think that 3-D is kinda overrated, and painful. . . these are genius!

I'm gonna have to go get me a pair.

    Thank you Hank!

    DFTBA!

  • You have a wife?????????????

  • you have a wife?

  • My mom is blind in one eye, thus she can't experience 3D movies like the rest of us. She would just decline when we invited her to see a movie that happened to be in 3D, because it would be a miserable experience for her. For her birthday, I got her your 2D glasses, and she wanted me to thank you, because now she can go see movies with her family. So, thanks Hank!

  • @allieXwa113 If your mom is completely blind in one eye, she can just use the normal 3d glasses provided at the theater... Nice of you to support Hank anyway =).

  • @fluffstr If you knew how 3D glasses work you would know how with 3D glasses each lens blocks an image hence each eye gets a different image which the brain interprets as 3D. This means that the image for allieXwa113's mum would be for lack of a better word ble ble (read in french accent). If I have misinterpreted your comment in some way well I am sorry. Lastly DFTBA!

  • @ClaireLaBear11 Next time you go to the movies, put on the 3d glasses and then cover one of your eyes with your hand. You will see a clear 2d image. Hence, if someone can only see out of one eye, they would be able to just put on regular 3d glasses and watch the movie in 2d. Essentially, that is what Hank's glasses are doing....Both of the Lenses in the glasses are the same, so they effectively block out one of the two images being projected.

  • @fluffstr I think it mainly has to do with the vertigo she gets. It's not that it doesn't appear somewhat 3 dimensional, it's that her equilibrium gets messed up and she gets sick. I'm not sure why, and I know 3D has come a long way, but when we'd take her to 3D movies, she'd get sick. And now, with the 2D glasses, she doesn't. Yeah.

  • @allieXwa113 Either way she would see the EXACT same thing.....

  • @allieXwa113 ...I'm blind in one eye too, and I can just wear the 3D glasses and experience the movie in 2D, but without all the fuzziness. It's just dark because the lenses are dark.

  • its so simple i wish i wouldve thought of it haha

  • Guess what Hank? Even in Louisiana we appreciate them!

I was about to go to school when I heard '2D-Glasses' and 'Hank Green' on the radio. I stopped eating and listened very carefully, it wasn't my imagination!

    =D

  • THIS IS AWESOME! My friends and I always have trouble deciding which showing to watch, some of us like 3d and some don't. Thank you Hank!

  • I prefer 2D movies anyhow. Not just because of the heachaches, but as PerhapsPossibly said above, 3D movies are only worth it if they're shot in 3D.

I saw Captain America at the midnight showing in 2D and still thought it was an excellent movie - I personally think 3D distracts from the story and movie itself and makes the willing suspension of disbelief more difficult.

  • INUYASHA poster

  • portal2 ftw

  • U know that they look like the 3d glasses from a cinema

  • just dont watch 3D movies DICKHEAD

  • @KINGX23XGREENXP What an extremely well thought out insult. Really man, you gotta consider the situation. Some movie theatres (mine included) don't have both the 3d and 2d version of movies in the theatre, so sometimes you have no choice but to watch it in 3d. Also, not many people go to the movies alone, and when you go with a group, you have the people who wanna watch 3d and some who wanna watch it in 2d. I realize you have an opinion, but at least think it through before you click 'post'.

  • Portal 2 poster! :)

  • I watched this with my 3D glasses

  • its a big shit

  • I used these at Harry Potter Premiere and they were AWWWWESOME! They totally made me not have headache at all (until the crying :() and that's my story ok bye

  • I made 2D glasses by putting two left lenses in one pair and two right lenses in the other. I hope that works too...

  • "i had this idea..and then i MADE it. i made my idea REAL" cracks me uppp xDD

  • i just told my sister about the 2d glasses. she nearly killed me for not telling her before hand.

  • nice Inuyasha poster XD because i see kagome there and i little of Inuyasha, like a bit of his arm ^~^

  • I wanted to buy a pair... website is down. :(

  • I was JUST about to say HEY PORTAL 2 poster! and then Hank mentioned it lol

  • Haha, dragged her ass to the cinema anyway, lol.

  • I love 3D and im annoyed that there is a massive sect of people who don't appreciate it. It's just great to have another step towards clarity in a movie. I mean why don't people rage about surround sound?

  • My friend can only see with one eye... do the 2D glasses work anyway? o.o we want to watch HP but apparently he won't be able to see 3D...

  • Very useful information....! thanks for upload this video...!

  • ThinkGeek stole your idea and are selling them for $8.99 instead of $7.99

  • @kevinboy041 I think they bought them from him. As for the high price, it's called profit.

  • vsauce ;o

  • I always see in 2d, I have monocular vision. It would suck if I knew what I was missing, since I don't I'm more pissed at the fact my long distance vision is terrible and that glasses don't help. I think it's what's made me a good artist too, my life is essentially one big hyperrealistic picture.

  • Your 2D glasses are on Vsauce!! Epic win.

  • you can just close ln eye!jeez hank!

  • :'D that's beautiful I want one

  • i calculated that you only have 3294 2-d glasses left, so 1706 people bought the glasses in 3 months, nice :)

  • I just saw these on thinkgeek, I was so proud to be a nerdfighter. Congrats Hank :)

  • Solution, don't watch "post process" 3d, it's awful and I'm pissed that they've ruined the reputation of 3d. Watch 3d filmed with TWO lenses, like OUR EYES. Sheesh

Go here and refuse to watch post process, google realorfake3d and check your 3d movie to see if it's fake.

  • I saw Green Lantern in 3D today and surprisingly I found out that I'm in the other 90%. And unlike other commenters here I can see some potential for this 3D technology but movies like that probably aren't it. This is still a cool idea that honestly need to be an option at every movie theater just like special hearing devices are for hearing impaired people. Now if you can make glasses that can stop people from getting headaches while watching an IMAX movie, you'd be rolling in money.

  • 90 people watch movies pirate style.

  • I want to get these just because Hank made them. I don't get 3D headaches, but I feel I would be failing as a nerdfighter if I didn't get 'em.

  • @uiruu Why would you feel that? They've explicitly said that you don't have to buy any of their stuff to be a nerdfighter. I'm sure there are better things you could spend your money on than glasses you don't want or even need.

  • @MeOnStuff It was a joke. I'm basically saying I'll buy something that Hank or John makes simply because I respect the hell out of them. I actually haven't baught them yet... and probably never will. But you know, I would like to.

  • Awesome-sauce! I always get headaches in 3D movies too! Wonderful idea, fantastic solution!

  • Fantastic!

  • 0:08 RAEG

  • OMG I just saw your glasses on HLN. It was hilarious cause I kinda spazzed out!

  • awesome hank, just awesome :D

  • Hank, your 2-D glasses were on the news!

Everyone, get Hank to see this.

  • @patelmike3535 i saw it on HLN today

but now i realize that one of the top comments is the same thing that i typed....so.....never mind

  • i wish these 2-D glasses would allow me to see everything in a super Mario kind of way, i would spend the rest of my life just jumping over turtles and into drainage pipes.

  • I don't get a headache by 3D movies. But find them really annoying. So I orderd a pair of glasses today :-D

  • Hank is such a bad ass!

  • I hate 3D movies.

  • Woo hoo Roger Ebert tweeted about your glasses!!!

  • As someone who gets headaches from 3D movies, I will definitely be getting a pair of these. :)

  • I saw this glasses in a norwegian magazine

  • Paper towns are 2d...
