do you lose all your stuff if you do this? my zune 30 currently wont play music, the synicing has been really weird and when it finished, i disconnected it but it stayed in connected mode. so i turned it off and back on and now it wont play my stuff, music or videos, and it wont sync anymore. I dont want to lose all of what I have on here.
@bigfloridapimp Not sure if this works on the Zune 30. I know for sure that it works on the Zune 80 (shown here) and the Zune 120 as well. And its a reboot like on your PC and does not remove any of your videos, music etc.
@RedPortiaOne After almost 5 hours of stressing and debating if I should do it, I did it and I am so relived. All my stuff is still there and my Zune is running and even syncing better because of it! My zune has been laggy, it freezes when the battery goes down a notch, it wouldnt sync right, it wouldnt disconnect right, it was giving me a headache. But in the hours since I tried this man... The problem I had with my Zune was that there were songs on there that weren't showing up in my Zune Device thing. It would show all the songs I wanted on my computer, but not on my Zune. There would be different songs instead. But this helps, a bit!(:

@lostpunkrock Well the only real winners that Apple has are the iPad and iPod products. Thier puters are a fail. Windows on the other hand is THE world leader with computer technology. People with iPods got jealous when Microsoft (yet again) created a winner in the Zune line which beat thier sad little iPod lol.

@TheBlooddolltd Hi :) If I'm not mistaken this reboot trick only works on the 80 and 120 GB model of the Zune. I have no experience with the 8GB model...sorry :(
@bigjay2386 You can either re-install the firmware, reformat the Zune's hard drive (making sure your Zune's data is backed up) or you can drain the Zunes battery 100% letting it sit there for a day dead. This many times acts as a reset switch and then recharge the Zune. It may reset your Zune and it will work again. If you still get the message after all this, then the problem is a little more complicated and requires you send it to Microsoft. You may be under warentee. Let me know how it goes.
hi! sorry for the bother! but my zune just recently stopped being recognized by the zune software? i plugged it into a computer without the software and it seems to stay on and charge, but when I plug it in to the computer that DOES have it, it shuts off completely? any suggestions for fixing it?
@blackredgirl10 No bother at all. Id try and update the Zune firmware and that might fix it. If that doesnt work you may have to reformat the Zune's hard drive. This requires that you delete all data on the Zune (make sure its backed up) then do the reformat. If you need further instructions on this process, then message me in here :)

When the units battery is 100% dead and it is recharged, it 'resets' itself. If this doesnt work then theres little else you can do other then sending it to MIcrosoft for repair. If its under 1 year old, it will still be under warentee

@RILEYproMAGICIAn The only other thing I suggest is to let the battery completly run out, let the Zune sit dead for a day, then recharge it. This might 'reset' the problem. But you are obviously accessing the internet by posting here, maybe the person who's computer you are using might allow you to re-install the firmware. Ask and see. It seriously sounds like either a firmware of corrupt file that is the problem. Also I have learned to backup my Zune files on DVDs in case they become corrupt.

Just got my zune to work ... the zune pad stopped working but everything else was working fine.. wat i did was i hooked my zune up to the computer and went to the zune software and tried to update it.. it said its already up to date so it also gave me the option to download some zune games on it and i selected that and it restarted my zune 4 me and now the pad works again.. There IS another key combo, which goes a little too far, reboot, erase ALL data (except firmware on the internal HD.) Learned these two tricks myself a few years ago. just got finished replacing the battery in my old 30GB. (replaced the 800mAh Li-ION with a 1000mAh Li-POL. Hopefully, the new battery won't suffer the fate of most Li-POL batteries (burn)

you sir are a life saver. I figured there was a hard-boot seq. I wish i knew about this before i destoryed my first 120 lol. But yeah, both of them (persumely tripped in my car while i was charging it and listening to the music through the AUX). I'm wondering if it was the car charger or the car cig lighter.

My Zune logo blinks on & off every second. It doesn't turn on at all. I took it apart too & disconnected the battery & the hard drive. It still didn't work. I tried rebooting, as you described--no good results. It appears that my Zune is not charging since It will go blank when unplugged from the PC. What does the BLINKing mean?
@ArthurElizondo Hi Aurthur :) I think the blinking display is an indication that the unit cant access the hard drive. Additionally if it wont accept a charge I'd try to disassemble it again and make sure the hard drive and all connections are secure. Unfortunately opening the unit voids all warrentee from Microsoft. So if after opening your Zune and making sure all connections are secure and it still wont function, its time to get it to a MIcrosoft service center for some professional TLC.

@itachi456789 Does it give you your 3 to 4 hours video battery life? Id try draining the battery 100% till its dead then giving it a full 4 hour re charge and see if that helps. Also try rebooting it using my trick after the charge if the battery indicator isnt showing a full charge. Hope that helps :)
@RedPortiaOne It gives me zero battery life. Whenever I plug it in it gives me the charging symbol, but as soon as I take it out the battery indicator comes up and won't let me turn it on, it just keeps coming up. I'll try charging it for exactly four hours tonight and get back to you I guess.

My zune shuts off randomly as if the charge on my battery was gone but I still have like half when that happens. Then I can't turn it on until I plug it back in to charge it. What do you think the problem is?
@grod805 I had the same problem too for a bit then it went away by itself. I think its a problem with the firmware. This problem happened to me for a few weeks about a year ago, then I updated the new firmware and it stopped. Also I was using My Zune all the time too so it may have just needed a rest :)

@806jonathan It works for 95% of Zune users because a misbehaving Zune is usually always a Zune that needs to be rebooted, and thats what this trick does. If it doesnt work then there is something else wrong besides the unit needing to be rebooted. If its less then a year old try having it serviced under the warentee

@samsonantor Before I found out about this Zune reboot trick I have posted on my site, I rebooted my Zune by letting the battery drain. To my knowlege the only two ways to Reboot a misbehaving Zune is either to let the battery drain, OR to do the Zune Reboot trick. I'm gonna research it to see if there are other ways to reboot a Zune and will let you know, but I think that your Zune may have a hardware or firmware issue, which unfortunately requires you to ship it to Microsoft for costy repairs.

@samsonantor And the reboot trick doesn't help? Well you may have to try it a few times. Theres something else that might get your Zune working. Leave your Zune on (in your case with the radio on) till the battery is ABSOLUTELY dead. It might take a few days depending on how charged your battery is. Then go recharge your Zune. You see, when a Zune's battery is 100% dead the Zune reboots itself when the battery is charged too :) Let me know how it workd for you

Hey I just read news on line about a 1 TB (Terrabyte) chip based on Nano technology that had just been built. The article says that by about 2012 or so that 1 TB Zunes and ipods will be out on the market. THis will be for a price that is comparable to the current chips out there. Believe me that when this thing hits the market, its going to revolutionize everything!

Zune vs ipod is just persol taste. And I wouldnt let people's opinions make my decision on a Zune or an ipod. In March 2008 I got an ipod and tested it out for a week, then returned it. I then bought a Zune and tried it, and never turned back. It was just such a superior product that the ipod couldnt touch with so many extras, not to mention a radio. I used my Zune every day since i got it, and have NEVER had a prob with it. Try one and decide for yourself. Thats what return policys are for lol
Absolutely it will help. Try it, cus this trick is just gonna reboot your Zune. Its kinda like if your computer freezes up and you reboot it. Most times it will fix the problem. Let me know how it works out for you
@brewskiezz I think if rebooting DOesnt help and you cant re install the firmware, then maybe yu can try to update to the 64 bit Zune firmware. |I that doesnt do it then you have to sent ot to MOcrosoft for service :(
Same thing happened to mine. Called tech support, they stepped me through the same troubleshooting guide on the support website, then they told me to pack it up and send it to them. Warranty was still good, so I just have to wait for 10-15 days.
Hey blakspyder. I know how you feel. I got my Zune 80 in March 2008 and had to go to America to get it. I live in Canada and the Zune 80 wasnt released here till June 2008. Well ipod isn't as good as a Zune cuz there's no radio and the screen is only half the size of a Zune, but look at it this way. Your ipod has a ton of memory :)

There is a 'Battery Saver' mode, by pushing the joy-pad down while holding the back button, which puts the device in sleep mode.. There IS another key combo, which goes a little too far, reboot, erase ALL data (except firmware on the internal HD.) Learned these two tricks myself a few years ago. just got finished replacing the battery in my old 30GB. (replaced the 800mAh Li-ION with a 1000mAh Li-POL. Hopefully, the new battery won't suffer the fate of most Li-POL batteries (burn)

@RedPortiaOne Yep! toggling the lock switch, or pressing the Play/Pause button to power it up again.. (goes through the3 normal reboot)

you sir are a life saver. I figured there was a hard-boot seq. I wish i knew about this before i destoryed my first 120 lol. But yeah, both of them (persumely tripped in my car while i was charging it and listening to the music through the AUX). I'm wondering if it was the car charger or the car cig lighter.

My Zune logo blinks on & off every second. It doesn't turn on at all. I took it apart too & disconnected the battery & the hard drive. It still didn't work. I tried rebooting, as you described--no good results. It appears that my Zune is not charging since It will go blank when unplugged from the PC. What does the BLINKing mean?

@ArthurElizondo Hi Aurthur :) I think the blinking display is an indication that the unit cant access the hard drive. Additionally if it wont accept a charge I'd try to disassemble it again and make sure the hard drive and all connections are secure. Unfortunately opening the unit voids all warrentee from Microsoft. So if after opening your Zune and making sure all connections are secure and it still wont function, its time to get it to a MIcrosoft service center for some professional TLC.

@MrSpartica Hi :) All I can really say is to try the trick, and perhaps re install the firmware. Maybe try letting the battery drain 100% and then recharging it again. If you get the support screen then your Zune may have to go off to Microsoft for some warentee maintenence. Sorry I couldnt be of more help bro :(

@itachi456789 Does it give you your 3 to 4 hours video battery life? Id try draining the battery 100% till its dead then giving it a full 4 hour re charge and see if that helps. Also try rebooting it using my trick after the charge if the battery indicator isnt showing a full charge. Hope that helps :)

@RedPortiaOne It gives me zero battery life. Whenever I plug it in it gives me the charging symbol, but as soon as I take it out the battery indicator comes up and won't let me turn it on, it just keeps coming up. I'll try charging it for exactly four hours tonight and get back to you I guess.

Hey thanks, I have a question.
My zune shuts off randomly as if the charge on my battery was gone but I still have like half when that happens. Then I can't turn it on until I plug it back in to charge it. What do you think the problem is?

@grod805 I had the same problem too for a bit then it went away by itself. I think its a problem with the firmware. This problem happened to me for a few weeks about a year ago, then I updated the new firmware and it stopped. Also I was using My Zune all the time too so it may have just needed a rest :)

@806jonathan It works for 95% of Zune users because a misbehaving Zune is usually always a Zune that needs to be rebooted, and thats what this trick does. If it doesnt work then there is something else wrong besides the unit needing to be rebooted. If its less then a year old try having it serviced under the warentee

okay so i tried letting the battery drain and recharging it...my laptop doesnt read it at all now...i even tried putting it on my moms boyfriends laptop..it read it...so i tried resetting the zune again and nothing still shows up...please help me..i just bought this and i thought it was awesome!

@samsonantor Before I found out about this Zune reboot trick I have posted on my site, I rebooted my Zune by letting the battery drain. To my knowlege the only two ways to Reboot a misbehaving Zune is either to let the battery drain, OR to do the Zune Reboot trick. I'm gonna research it to see if there are other ways to reboot a Zune and will let you know, but I think that your Zune may have a hardware or firmware issue, which unfortunately requires you to ship it to Microsoft for costy repairs.

alright...i am still angry..i was at work earlier today and i was plzying my zune and worked fine...but my boss told me to put it away so i turned it off and put it in my pocket...i try to plug in my zune into my car and noticed my screeen froze...so i did what u just did and now my screen doesnt even show up...i tried erasing everything as well and nothing happened...PLEASE HELp?!!??!

@samsonantor And the reboot trick doesn't help? Well you may have to try it a few times. Theres something else that might get your Zune working. Leave your Zune on (in your case with the radio on) till the battery is ABSOLUTELY dead. It might take a few days depending on how charged your battery is. Then go recharge your Zune. You see, when a Zune's battery is 100% dead the Zune reboots itself when the battery is charged too :) Let me know how it workd for you

Hey I just read news on line about a 1 TB (Terrabyte) chip based on Nano technology that had just been built. The article says that by about 2012 or so that 1 TB Zunes and ipods will be out on the market. THis will be for a price that is comparable to the current chips out there. Believe me that when this thing hits the market, its going to revolutionize everything!

Zune vs ipod is just persol taste. And I wouldnt let people's opinions make my decision on a Zune or an ipod. In March 2008 I got an ipod and tested it out for a week, then returned it. I then bought a Zune and tried it, and never turned back. It was just such a superior product that the ipod couldnt touch with so many extras, not to mention a radio. I used my Zune every day since i got it, and have NEVER had a prob with it. Try one and decide for yourself. Thats what return policys are for lol

Absolutely it will help. Try it, cus this trick is just gonna reboot your Zune. Its kinda like if your computer freezes up and you reboot it. Most times it will fix the problem. Let me know how it works out for you

@brewskiezz I think if rebooting DOesnt help and you cant re install the firmware, then maybe yu can try to update to the 64 bit Zune firmware. |I that doesnt do it then you have to sent ot to MOcrosoft for service :(

Same thing happened to mine. Called tech support, they stepped me through the same troubleshooting guide on the support website, then they told me to pack it up and send it to them. Warranty was still good, so I just have to wait for 10-15 days.

Hey blakspyder. I know how you feel. I got my Zune 80 in March 2008 and had to go to America to get it. I live in Canada and the Zune 80 wasnt released here till June 2008. Well ipod isn't as good as a Zune cuz there's no radio and the screen is only half the size of a Zune, but look at it this way. Your ipod has a ton of memory :)
