Exterminieren is correct and it is a german verb.

It is just a rather old fashioned word which isnt used in common speech anymore since decades.

Exterminieren (to exterminate) was once a german bureaucratic term during the 19th century, for expelling someone from the country or from a state. For instance if he or she had no valid work permit for that state.

Its meaning is of course equal to eliminate , eradicate and so on, just like in english.

@bakura23 Yeah, "exterminieren" isn't actually a German verb, I think the producers just used it so that non-German speakers would understand it. In any case, it sounds better than using a real verb like "vernichten"

Had a great laugh back a few months with an austrian character in a Star Trek-novel. Someone apparently forgot to tell the author, that "Scheisskopf" isn't used in german. At least not that I ever came across someone saying that.

Also: For some great clichee-german moments have the character in question refer to his superior as "Herr" [Something] (e.g. "Herr Major"). Or get "Du" (you, personal) and "Sie" (you, formal) mixed up.

Because the creators didn't bother to listen to the German translation of the series, before writing that German part. :)

If I recall it correctly in the German translations the Daleks used to scream: "Eliminieren!" eventhough you are right, the accurate translation for: "Exterminate!" is "Vernichten!"

"Exterminieren" will be understood by about 99,9999% of German native speakers, but "Exterminieren!", well I have never heard a German use that particular expression (nor read it)

Exterminieren is surely a rarely used word today but it is a valid german word of latin origin as it is mentioned in the Duden.

Therefore it is also a valid and also the most exact translation of exterminate as both words have the same latin origin and meaning in both languages.

Back in the old days it was a common bureaucratic term for expelling someone from the country.

Just like the english word "terminate" is sometimes used as term when someone gets fired from his job.

I am tempted to disagree with you here.

"Go to hell" would be "Fahr zur Hölle" (see German is pure luxury, you don't need to go, you can drive:) )

The Daleks and the old Lady do somehow have a slight English accent when they speak German. ^^

Well, there may not be anymore Daleks from here on, because Steven Moffet wants to make changes and new enemies. That is possibly the last big Dalek invasion for the rest of Doctor Who, or at least for years and years to come. Moffet does things differently to Davies.

In germany the darleks say "vernichten"

It`s the real translation for Exterminate.(ausrotten,vertilg­en,vernichten)

I think they say "exterminieren" so you can understand it in english.
