  • I haven't been near Ben MacDhui since the mid 90s but there is nowhere on earth that frightens me more. I love the cairngorms but will always steer very clear of that particular hill.

  • tsk tsk... I live in a town called Kingussie (about 15-20 miles from the mountain) and anyone (including me who is supersticious) believes in the Grey Man of Ben Macdhui and the story goes that if you see the grey man he will show you the way off the mountains, bit of a godsend in my opinion.

  • so far, this is sounding like bigfoot, but who knows

  • I first heard about the big grey man when I was about 9 yrs old in the mid 70's. Our family had an A.A tourists guide to Scotland and one chapter was called "Here be monsters". There was an illustration of Collie being chased by the big grey man. Other creatures mentioned were Shellycoat on the lonely foothills near Hermatige Castle who lured travellers away from their paths by shouting "lost, lost...", and a sea monster in the Sound of Sleat, between Skye and the mainland.

  • what is the spectre? the broken spectre...brachen? thats pretty wild

  • I love this legend. Great film.

  • creepy shit...this legend always intrigued me

  • i got told when i was wee he guards the entrance to the fairy realms lol.

  • Great film! I really liked the story about Corrour Bothy. I will be telling it to a group when we are there next!

  • Highly enjoyable, thank you very much!

  • i've just heard about the big grey man and i dunno if this is a good or bad thing as i'm headin for a 2 day hike in the cairngorms, summitting ben macdhui and staying in corour bothy this weekend! i've already been up there once, it was very misty and calm, but i never saw anything.. maybe this weekend!

  • @richy139 He is not there no more,he left to lead the Labour party

  • I love this legend, and i'd love to climb this mountain one day. I'd propably die, but whatever.

Liked the film very much :)

  • A very down to earth bloke I know said he was near the top of the Ben when he was overcome by a feeling of fear he couldn't explain. He turned back and made his way down the hill.

  • @BillDFC

If I decide to ever visit that place, I'm going to take a group with me, and we're going to have guns. That should help the panic level. However, I'm wondering why nobody has thought of going up the mountain in larger groups. In these cases, it's just one or two guys.

Someone else who lives in that area should try going up there with a group of friends (around 5 or 6), armed with guns and carrying twice as much food and water as they actually need. There's courage in numbers.

  • @pinheadman665 This is Scotland- you cant walk around with a gun here unless its a shotgun or a deer rifle that you have a proper license for (thank goodness).

  • @Thunda65

Well, then me and the group would just get licences, and then carry guns with us up the mountain. There. Problem solved.

  • @pinheadman665 Mmm, yeah, I can just see it. Once you had filled out all the paperwork and given them your permenant address in the area (they dont give licenses to tourists), telling the local police "yeah, me and my friends would like firearms licenses- we thought we would go up Ben MacDhui and see if we can shoot a mythical creature, so if you would be good enough to give us the licenses we will be on our way....". Yeah, 'problem solved'. LOL

  • @Thunda65

I never said anything about shooting a mythical creature. The guns are there just in case we need protection from it. And I obviously know that you need to do more than that to get your license. And who says I'd be a tourist? What if I'd decided to take up permanent residence in Scotland? hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

  • @pinheadman665 Really living up to your screen name there. So what would you be using the gun for if not shooting? How you gonna 'protect ' yourself? You gonna beat it with the stock? Really hope you dont come here and take up residence- last thing we need is trigger happy fantasists roaming the hills taking pot shots at whatever gives them a fright. But hey, whatever, man- seems like you got 'all the answers' LOL

  • @Thunda65

I'd still shoot it if it attacked, man. It's called shooting in self-defence. And I'm the pin head? And that's all depending if that thing is real. And I don't just shoot at anything that gives me a fright.

Look, in the end, all I'm trying to say is that if not me, then somebody should try going up the mountain with a large group, heavily armed and well provisioned, and explore the mountain some more. Find out more about if this big grey man truly exists or not.

  • @pinheadman665 Listen pal, the area you are talking about is a beautiful unspoilt wilderness- the very last thing it needs is groups of heavily armed men roaming around it looking for monsters. Have you heard of it attacking anyone? No. Its a story. Stop being a tool.

  • @Thunda65

I'm not saying that the monster exists; I just want to prove/disprove the whole story.

  • @pinheadman665 Well, good luck on your monster quest. Just dont bring any guns.

  • @Thunda65

I'm not saying I was gonna do it. I was entertaining the notion of it, or even suggesting the idea to someone else. And the only thing I thought of was simply going into the mountains and staying there for a while. And see if anybody would get seized by a so-called feeling of immense panic. That's all.

  • Thank you, both.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

  • great stuff
