No No No!!!!! You're wrong about the fucking camera!!!!! I HATE when I can't move the camera. Movable cameras is a fucking NECESSITY!!!!! My biggest drawback with Dead Rising on the Wii is the fact that the wiimote is laid out in a way that it's hard and almost pointless to use the ingame camera. Fallout 3 has mastered the camera/control scheme/dramatic camera effects thing
We need them so that a game that is so beautifully multiplayer as Little Big Planet wouldn't stand out so fucking amazingly. Does anyone besides me remember Zone of The Enders? That game is amazing, and the control layouts are very basic, the graphics are some of the best barnone. So much fun to play.
How did we get here? If games were still pong, donkey kong, and 1942, the genre would have been dead by now. Competition breeds expansion. For any and all people who think the Wiimote is hard to use: you are complete piles of shit. Play Dead Rising. You aim with the gun with the Wiimote. It's basically a button masher but allows you to aim a gun as well. Genius. It should never have been on xbox and should always have been a Wii game. It's simple and fun. No More Heroes, you perform advanced moves by wagging the nunchuck and wiimote in a specified direction. Again, genius.
I agree with the fact that the right stick moving you should not be the stick that you use to move. Since the nintendo and i'm sure even before that, the left side of the controller moves your character and the right side controls any further attack/actions. Even flash games follow this rule.

In fact I recently came to the much agreed conclusion that Legend of Zelda, the original, is one of the best games ever made. It's simple, but there's a lot you can do. It's non linear, and you actually don't lose anything by using codes to play the game.
I can think for a purpose for an "dodge" button: if the game in question doesn't offer a lock-on feature of some sort so you're always aiming at the enemy, moving left or right to dodge might mess up your aim. It's a thought.
Doesn't look like many people on Screw Attack are taking to you very well. They must just be used to the witless, lowest common denominator shock humor of AVGN.
DO NOT WANT! First Life in a Game, and before that AVGN (I think I got into him after LiaG, and at least that's not on the too-heavy GameTrailers (AND still are posted here)). YouTube is so much smoother, so much visually simpler than ScrewAttack or GameTrailers.

iv used screwattack a year ago or so and it worked nicely going good resolution and all that seeing james the nintendo nerd use that site alot, in a anycase lately screwattack has just been a pain in the, first off resolution has gone from good to horrible, and i cant even seem to load movies from that site anymore, even tought they have added 3 different types whit hd(that never works).
forgot to add its harder to navigate that site nowdays too, it seem like a random mess. they should realy make a new more clean interface.. that youtube is going away form it seem.. so maybe ill use screwattack instead of youtube if they clean up

hey i have no problem with him being on screwattack, just...the goddamn video player Will Not Load! I've tried for a week, not a damn thing. And I can barely get any of the videos to load either. I have to mess with the HD/SD settings to get them to buffer. And some times it doesn't even show the video, just the sound.
All in all, i don't think its a great video player
it depends what the age of your computer is, it works fine on my macbook pro i got half a year ago, but takes like an hour to start buffering on my dell from 01 or 02
That's so awesome! I didn't vote, but I'm so glad you're part of the Screwattack family! You're going to be a positive influence to the gamers, something that Wii owners who like the Wii like me have been desperately begging for.
Just went through the list of official PS3/360 releases to justify spending the money on either machine. Not nearly enough games to do that. Sony/Micro's graphics aren't enough to impress me yet, and the 3rd parties with "substance" to their games also develop for Nintendo.
Going after the control scheme was weak though. Many of the awesome games had a shitload of buttons. The more control you have over a game, the more technical you can get with it and "be" your character in any situation.
Most games on either system rely too much on the graphics and leave out the actual game - at least for what they're asking us to pay.
There are a few games that put out nice graphics and still have awesome gameplay, but not enough to justify committing to either machine. That's just in my own opinion though, and that may change as new things get released.
Would it help to know that every attempt to reach out to Tom has been rejected? From the few occasions I got to meet him he seems like a nice enough guy but still... Mickey has told me (yeah I do know him a bit) that they're tired of the crap going back and forth but when they don't want to accept any sort of "peace offering" that makes it a little hard. Say what you will about Craig but Tom isn't exactly being forgiving.

I'm "set off" by the slew of shovelware games and the nigh unusable controller... which they recently had to upgrade because it wasn't very good... and still isn't precise enough for most games... but that's all aside from the point. The 3rd party games on Sony's and Microsoft's consoles are the best ones on the market and it's entirely due to the freedom 3rd party developers have.
Bob's just pissed Nintendo's gone so far downhill in quality... so he tries to take potshots at everyone else...
I've personally never had a problem with ScrewAttack's video player, but I would suggest eventually posting some of your rants back here when you can for the crowd that does.

great work as usual, but when i heard the control scheme i was expecting you'd mention something about moving and jumping on the SAME THUMB! normally, its the left stick for movement and right for camera, but if movement's on the right, then you'd have to let go to actively jump, melee, hard melee, etc.
also, some might argue that camera angle in FPS is important for aiming and definitely vital for snipers, but that could all be simplified by using a separate mode for scope-shooting, amirite?

Mixed emotions here. Glad you're on ScrewAttack, as they're good people. Less glad that their player is currently acting up, meaning your vid doesn't run.
The point of the xbox wasn't to combine processing power with easy controls; I think it's safer to bet that the point was to make money. It had a big controller and those especially awkward white and black buttons which wouldn't have existed if they wanted to make more simple controls.
Oh look another eposiode of middle aged man clamping onto the early nintendo games and hoping that we revert to left, right, jump, and duck style games. I'm getting sick of this, he uses bionic commando a game developled by the worst studio in recent years (grin) as a bench mark for whats wrong with the 360. I can do that too, Ninja bread man is exactly whats wrong with the wii. The idea that overly simply controls make the game good is just idiotic. Simple controls can be done just as wrong.
Poorly made games with "simple" gameplay suffer from a completely different problem though. The kinds of games your talking about are bad because they lack depth and are badly programmed.

I had this problem with prototype. It's not bad but it take a looong time to figure out the buttons. gets on my nerves..and I AM A FIGHTING GAME FAN!!!
He makes some good points. What I don't agree with is that more buttons equals less intuitive gaming. Or that less buttons means that control is easier.
Companies used to make left d-pad up jump, or make A jump instead of B, and all sorts of stuff. Likewise, Say something like Halo. Uses every button on the controller and it all feels pretty natural.
Or computer games. I play games that has dozens of abilities with about two dozen keybinds. Easy. It's all about set up.
I just watched this episode, and that reminded me of the AVGN's Batman games review part 1, where he went ballistic over how messed up the controls are for this SNES Batman game that looks similar to Mortal Kombat. It's like the game developers thought the 4 main buttons weren't enough to work with so they tried to confuse the player with ridiculous controls that you would never guess at first.
He cant post anything thats on S.A. on YUU-TUUB because SA has the exclusive-ity. He gets paid to do it, they get exclusive rights, at least for a time. AVGN does the same thing, by the time his vids make it to yuu-tuub they re 1yr + old.

Great video. I'm commenting here because I'm hoping you'll do what the AVGN eventually does and that is move your old videos over here. YouTube is just the most effective video player on the internet. ScrewAttack's video player is really slow and kinda crappy. Your videos are usually just still images, and yet even THAT was a struggle for it to play for me.

Goddamnit, the video players at Screwattack are complete shite. Move your mouse over it and half the video screen is inhabited by options. Take your mouse off, and those options won't leave until 10 seconds later. It's tedious.

I'm kinda used to it but who the hell thought right stick moves you was a good Idea? that means to you basically can't attack if your runing unles your using it like a joystick or have a mutant thumb. is it really right stick? and that also means you'd have to constanly swing and move the camera all the time if camera counldn't be right stick. not buying that now.
I love them. But there are ads before ALL videos. Ads EVERYWHERE on the site. They sell features to GT and IGN, and once The game overthinker gets famous they will sell him out too.

I'm "set off" by the slew of shovelware games and the nigh unusable controller... which they recently had to upgrade because it wasn't very good... and still isn't precise enough for most games... but that's all aside from the point. The 3rd party games on Sony's and Microsoft's consoles are the best ones on the market and it's entirely due to the freedom 3rd party developers have.
Bob's just pissed Nintendo's gone so far downhill in quality... so he tries to take potshots at everyone else...

great work as usual, but when i heard the control scheme i was expecting you'd mention something about moving and jumping on the SAME THUMB! normally, its the left stick for movement and right for camera, but if movement's on the right, then you'd have to let go to actively jump, melee, hard melee, etc.
also, some might argue that camera angle in FPS is important for aiming and definitely vital for snipers, but that could all be simplified by using a separate mode for scope-shooting, amirite?

There are a lot of great guys on screwattack who post decent comments so listen to them. I like your work and screwattack is one of my favorite sites for news, VGV's top 10 and all sorts of stuff. The point of the xbox wasn't to combine processing power with easy controls; I think it's safer to bet that the point was to make money. It had a big controller and those especially awkward white and black buttons which wouldn't have existed if they wanted to make more simple controls.

Oh look another eposiode of middle aged man clamping onto the early nintendo games and hoping that we revert to left, right, jump, and duck style games. I'm getting sick of this, he uses bionic commando a game developled by the worst studio in recent years (grin) as a bench mark for whats wrong with the 360. I can do that too, Ninja bread man is exactly whats wrong with the wii. The idea that overly simply controls make the game good is just idiotic. Simple controls can be done just as wrong.

Poorly made games with "simple" gameplay suffer from a completely different problem though. The kinds of games your talking about are bad because they lack depth and are badly programmed.
Bob's saying that with a lot of modern games if you just streamlined the gameplay set up and not give every single button a function if it isn't necessary, you can make a game that's still deep and such, but is also more functional and intuitive.
Seriously, if you're tired of his videos, why bother?

My issue is not with his message.
I don't agree with his use of BC as his example for bad video game control.
BC was a bad game in many areas, from level design to AI to art. Useing it as an example of controls is fucking retaded controls are a part of a bigger picture that has to work together to make the game good.

This kinda feels like it's ranting on something that doesn't need or deserve to be ranted about. Bionic Commando and Lair were both sucky games, and are regarded as such, and anybody who actually was still waiting for DNF needs to just go shoot themselves.

I've never been big on Screwattack, but I guess I'll have to start visiting there now.
Controllers don't usually bug me, but I do get what you mean with some of the layouts being just too awkward.
Also, I loved the intro for the video, I'm sort of similarly "Obnoxious intelligent, Bitter, and deep abiding loathing when the mood strikes me" type.
(I've often joked the only reason I haven't taken over the world is that it'd mean I'd have to deal with more idiots.)

He makes some good points. What I don't agree with is that more buttons equals less intuitive gaming. Or that less buttons means that control is easier.
Companies used to make left d-pad up jump, or make A jump instead of B, and all sorts of stuff. Likewise, Say something like Halo. Uses every button on the controller and it all feels pretty natural.
Or computer games. I play games that has dozens of abilities with about two dozen keybinds. Easy. It's all about set up.

I just watched this episode, and that reminded me of the AVGN's Batman games review part 1, where he went ballistic over how messed up the controls are for this SNES Batman game that looks similar to Mortal Kombat. It's like the game developers thought the 4 main buttons weren't enough to work with so they tried to confuse the player with ridiculous controls that you would never guess at first.

Great video. I'm commenting here because I'm hoping you'll do what the AVGN eventually does and that is move your old videos over here. YouTube is just the most effective video player on the internet. ScrewAttack's video player is really slow and kinda crappy. Your videos are usually just still images, and yet even THAT was a struggle for it to play for me.
I liked the video, you had some good points, but their website overshadowed my enjoyment of it overall. Please put them here too if you can

I'm kinda used to it but who the hell thought right stick moves you was a good Idea? that means to you basically can't attack if your runing unles your using it like a joystick or have a mutant thumb. is it really right stick? and that also means you'd have to constanly swing and move the camera all the time if camera counldn't be right stick. not buying that now.
