I am trying to understand the moral of your story. Here's the literal meaning: you are caught between the "crab" and the "victim" of the crab. The victim succeeds despite the crab trying to pull them back. The crab won't let its victim help it, but you do, leaving your crab friend alone. Later, the crab friend is inspired by wanting to be together and pulls itself up and out.
So is the point you're trying to make that you should support the victims and not the crabs? :)
i love your story is really wonderful to me. my Deaf teachers told me about it years ago...smile...i post it on my fb once while, watch and smile hehe...i really love the shift from human to crab back and forth is so excellent wow!!...and mouth ASL, body lean...you are so great...watch over and over...smile...thank you for this!...i see your point, not easy, "tough love"...
That's very interesting. This is the first time I've heard about the crab theory in my 3 years of knowing ASL. I think the crab theory also transcends to other cultures/genders as well. It could also be called the tall poppy syndrome.

Jon, do you consider the negative view many deaf people take toward Jane K. Fernandes to be a prime example of the Crab Theory in action?

I just google the Crab Theory.. and it's a wonderful analogy that is true in every community.
I'm in my first ASL, I love it!! I'm glad that I came across it.
