I played with one of these in my local guitar shop about an hour ago. Ash body, Maple neck, '69(N), '69(rev wound), Texas special (B).
The thing is that I went in to look at neck profiles and pickups and ended up deciding not to bother with messing about with my current part-o-caster (EMG Active, SPC, EXG, Warmoth compound radius with rosewood on birdseye, JV Squier body) and i'm going to buy a Custom Deluxe instead! £1,800, lifetime warranty and everything I need in a guitar. Thanks Fender!!
Callaham trem blocks...... changed the way i look at the current fender trem blocks. i put one in my 08 american standard stratocaster..... more sustain, better attack, acoustically louder. look em up. way better than stock fender block.
@PopExpo Callaham makes the best Strat tremolo system, I don't care what anyone says. I do like a brass block as well though, different tone than steel. Callaham's blocks are far above Fender's...
I have a 2004 American strat, black with maple neck. I'll sometimes go awhile without playing it, but most of the time I can't put it down. Clapton, Gilmour, Hendrix, Harrison, Vaughn, Knopfler....you can't go wrong with one.
I Have An American Standard '10 Strat... That Is A Perfect Instrument In Itself So I Can Only Drool At The Idea Of A Custom Shop Strat... Its Next On My List Though So Don't Worry (Y)
They really are gorgeous instruments. I have a forerunner of this, a 2000 example, similar appearance to the one inthe vid, mine however is up-specced, has a more figured body and a heavily birdseye-ed neck & headstock. Tone is just enormous (think Mayer) and the thing just RINGS. They really are very different and alot better than regular US Strats - which are already very good themselves. Try one, you'll be converted.
I also have this guitar. It's like the most important thing in my life. People come and go, this baby stays no matter what I do or say. Love the playability, just love it!
Fender uses green wood. Which means your neck is going to shrink. I own two Americans and they had to spend way to much time in the shop. One had the crasiest rising tongue I've ever seen. Love that Strat feel and sound but I hate paying that much money for a guitar that is going to need significant fret work. Add $200 to the cost of any strat cause the frets will need a dressing. I'd like to buy more but not untill the quality of fretwork improves. Sorry.
@shreddy412 - Sorry,,that's nonsense. I don't know what kind of strats you have but, a proper Custom Shop Stratocaster is just above perfect. I have two of them actually which are signature guitars: 1 Robin Trower and 2 Eric Johnson and they are " I repeat " PERFECT...... So, instead to add $200 onto the budget for repairs, just buy a proper instrument in the first place and then forget about the rest. Just enjoy the feeling and the playing!
@Italicorum3500 You may be right. I have two of the standard models which in Canada cost me around $1500 at the time. I figured for that kind of money I'd be safe. I have to admit that I've never played a custom model though. I'll take your word that they don't have the same problem. Thanks.
I played one today and now I'm ready to sell my '07 American Deluxe HSS Strat to save up for one of these. It's worth every penny. This guitar is a thoroughbred all the way. It sets a new standard for the Strat. I love it.
I have never played the custom classic, but I did look up and compare the specs. It seems to me that the main difference besides the pick-ups would be in the quality of wood used on the necks and the shape of the neck. The custom deluxe has a highly figured grain and from actually playing it a little more bulky cshaped neck than a modern c shaped neck. The guitar mentioned here costs around $1000 more than the one you mentioned. You would have to compare them yourself to see if this is worth it.
In The UK Expect to pay around £1599... Hefty price but as a lifelong instrument..? Just Wonderful.. The Classic I have never played -I would love to because the Cobalt blue see through laquer on ash looks incredible on that model and I would love to own but is now discontinued.. The deluxe soundwise and to play..= To die for.
Just spent the day playing this exact model in my local shop..-I thought all 'custom' talk was hype..I Did'nt even like the way it looked..Straight away I realised - Oh my god.. Best ever guitar / instrument I have ever played..
It's funny to me that folks think a guitar sounds like one of SRV's guitars. In reality, SRV's tone was mostly in his amp setup and his fingers. He could plug in a $149 Squire Strat into his rig, sound like SRV, and no one would be the wiser!
For anyone who doubts this, go buy a Pod Xt and fiddle with the settings. Yes, the guitar makes a BIG difference in tone, but the amp makes a BIIIIIIGGGG difference in tone!
also could you do clean and overdrive

I too agree out of the Custom Shops I played, and i played quite a few, the 69 pickups were the best....Great job Mike
DrGit 8 months ago
That rear pickup sounds more like clipping, not a fat warm tone... Neck and Mid are a good balance of warmth and clarity.

@QueefOlberman
Maple or ebony would be even brighter.
I can't really tell how bright it is 'cause of the acoustic-bleed, but I do think the amp is set to kill. Too much for me.
