"Only the spirit of attack, bourne in a brave heart will bring success to any fighter aircraft. No matter how advanced it may be."
Surely most of you have heard this quote before as well as who said it?
This visual depiction of this battle epitomizes it's meaning in every way (but typically American glorifying) and the 109 Pilot perished in a way best befitting his profession. Allied pilots could fly a tour and go home, the LW could not. They had to fight or die, the majority did both.
@M1LS572 The P-51s ate 109s for lunch. If the Germans were that good they would have got more kills. The 109s were good if they had a good pilot but they had some things that could have been improved on.
The Pilot was Oberfelwebel (sergeant) Franz Meindl a 31 victory Ace, a very good experienced pilot, unlike most encountered by the US airman at this stage of the war, most luftwaffe pilots at this stage were inexperienced and easy targets for the Mustangs.
Major Specht flew a Fw190 this day so it couldn't have been him, according to a book i read on Operation Bodenplatte it was Meindl in the Bf109
brave men all,but the german pilots either knew or didnt know they were fighting for madmen!if they did know im glad to see every one of them flying their coffins, if they didnt know , which is hard to believe then i salute them as brave warriors
@1973c0g True, their acts of chivalry and bravery are admirable, yet the fact the were flying in support of someone who could do things no sane man would turns their reputation sour.
That narrator was just radiating too much smug, if you ask me-any air battle could go one way or the other. Assuming that any air force is invincible because of lopsided victories is always a fatal mistake.
Yeah that FW190 pilot was outstanding but at the end, he got killed..he did not survived that headon crash to the ground..Mustangs are just too good...I have read some books of german aces mostly fighting Russians whose planes are inferior..that's how their records kills are fantastic..and almost to the man these german aces were shotdown a few times themselves but survived their wounds
@010bobby It was a ME109 first of all, second it took 4+ Pony's to bring him down, he was a better pilot than the Americans. I'm American but its plain and simple, he was the better pilot, the Americans simply had numbers on him at the time.
@Leparas Yes! The "badass German" was most likely Major Gunther Specht. Specht WAS in the the Luftwaffe formation described in this episode, and he was listed as "Missing In Action", after this operation. So yeah, th German pilot probably was Specht. Good catch, sir!
@XJokerekoP wrong. it was a british REQUESTED plane. they asked for a plane that could do certain things, and North American Aviation designed the mustang. the british added the merlin and then the plane REALLY shined. so it can be said it was a co-operative effort.
Loved it. There weren't many pilots left for the Luftwaffe after the war which is why we rarely get their story. That 109 pilot had guts and skill, never backing down once in the face of overwhelming odds. I admire his courage.
A little quick online research revealed that Gunther Specht of JG11 was an experienced Luftwaffe "experte" lost during the attack on Asch. He may have been the 109 pilot, although some sources say Specht was flying a FW190.
This is such an awesome show! They HAVE to make more episodes of this! They should make one about the German pilots flying the Me-109 and Fw-190... From their perspective... And about The Battle Of Britain, from both British and German perspectives... Wtih these awesome recreations it would be sweet to see Spitfire's and Me-109's fighting! Do you know if they are gonna make more episodes of this?
oh great! another great american victory...what a surprise...by 1945 the german planes were probably being flown by newspaper delivery boys....how come this idiotic program never showed the dogfights of german aces like Adolf Galland (104 victories all against western allies) or Erich Hartmann (352 victories!!!) ? american programming has never really moved beyond propoganda...
funny, baldy Bob Brullle complains about the german AA to shout upon him even as he was wing-tipping...later in the movie Moates becomes a hero when shooting upon a stricken FW190, even as he went for chicken as he realized some explosions around his plane..thats typical...such documentaries are like the WOCHENSCHAU was, producing heroes....dont get me wrong I dont defend the Nazis but sovereign winners dont need such poppy-cock hero productions
I have to correct my comment. Brulle wasnt complaining about enemy Flaks, he was pissed off about his own troops...well one quarter of the german planes were killed by friendly fire (blue on blue) so he was lucky to get his plane safe back to the base
They should make a doc about the Schweinfurt/ Regensburg raid!! Operation Bodenplatte was a total failure and waste of resources. Adolf Galland had been planning for a massive attack on the heavy bombers. He had been gathering planes and pilots for his operation to shoot down heavy bombers in large numbers. He was hoping get some thousand fighter planes to engage the american bombers and hoped some 400 to be shot down. That would have stopped the day light bombing offensive!
@101clockman no we dont know because if they told us then anybody could see how much liers are the guys that speak for the dogfight and how stupid are these history chanels documentaries,of course anybody can realise how easy is for a historian to find who was the pilot, germans keep archives even for the shit they take every day
Well, at low altitudes the Bf-109G had better manourability (the P-51D would stall in tight turns at low altitude), more or less the same speed and its 30mm MK108 cannon could send the P-51D (or any other fighter) to the ground in one hit. Off course, since the P-51D usually escorted bombers they usually met with Bf´s and Fw´s at mid to high altitude, where the P-51D had the advantage.
One of the best parts I've seen out the whole series, big respect to that German Pilot, good to see the dogfights not all one sided in one sense. Would be good too see some German Pilots accounts of their dogfights.
