  • "Only the spirit of attack, bourne in a brave heart will bring success to any fighter aircraft. No matter how advanced it may be."

Surely most of you have heard this quote before as well as who said it?

This visual depiction of this battle epitomizes it's meaning in every way (but typically American glorifying) and the 109 Pilot perished in a way best befitting his profession. Allied pilots could fly a tour and go home, the LW could not. They had to fight or die, the majority did both.

  • I don't believe a fuck about that only one US fighter got killed. The Germans where overall way better than them.

  • @M1LS572 The P-51s ate 109s for lunch. If the Germans were that good they would have got more kills. The 109s were good if they had a good pilot but they had some things that could have been improved on.

  • The Pilot was Oberfelwebel (sergeant) Franz Meindl a 31 victory Ace, a very good experienced pilot, unlike most encountered by the US airman at this stage of the war, most luftwaffe pilots at this stage were inexperienced and easy targets for the Mustangs.

Major Specht flew a Fw190 this day so it couldn't have been him, according to a book i read on Operation Bodenplatte it was Meindl in the Bf109

  • brave men all,but the german pilots either knew or didnt know they were fighting for madmen!if they did know im glad to see every one of them flying their coffins, if they didnt know , which is hard to believe then i salute them as brave warriors

  • @1973c0g True, their acts of chivalry and bravery are admirable, yet the fact the were flying in support of someone who could do things no sane man would turns their reputation sour.

  • only hitler deserves to die in this war, everyone else does not..

  • @coel3 What about the SS?

  • @coel3 What about Himmler and Goebbels and SS?

  • Am Glad Hitler's War machine bites the dust. Hitler and the Nazi's are a monster s that need to be stop to end the war in Europe.

  • That narrator was just radiating too much smug, if you ask me-any air battle could go one way or the other. Assuming that any air force is invincible because of lopsided victories is always a fatal mistake.

  • @All2Meme How can he be assuming anything when he is telling history???

  • Who flew the badass 109? Not Gunther Specht. He flew a FW 190 on that day

  • @adolfhilter

It was the Oberfeldwebel Franz Meindl,an 33 kill ace from JG 11.

  • This pilot was ace major GUNTHER SPECHT he was main commander of JG11.He have 34 confirmed kills.

  • Anyone else say awwww :( when the German Ace got shot down?

  • It was major Gunther Specht.

  • To think men fought in the air in those amazing airplanes. Astounding.

  • Lol 3 vs 1 american style of fight. They love fight with novices pilots but when they fight with experience pilot they run away.

  • Yeah that FW190 pilot was outstanding but at the end, he got killed..he did not survived that headon crash to the ground..Mustangs are just too good...I have read some books of german aces mostly fighting Russians whose planes are inferior..that's how their records kills are fantastic..and almost to the man these german aces were shotdown a few times themselves but survived their wounds

  • @010bobby It was a ME109 first of all, second it took 4+ Pony's to bring him down, he was a better pilot than the Americans. I'm American but its plain and simple, he was the better pilot, the Americans simply had numbers on him at the time.

  • Wow, that 109 pilot was amazing!

  • 3:11 Do a barrel roll!

  • i hope the amazing german pilot lived to be taken prisoner he dosent deserve to die

  • @MRps3foreva Shame he didn't have a buddy turn up , he could have used one

  • very very epic and historical battle

  • @Leparas Yes! The "badass German" was most likely Major Gunther Specht. Specht WAS in the the Luftwaffe formation described in this episode, and he was listed as "Missing In Action", after this operation. So yeah, th German pilot probably was Specht. Good catch, sir!

  • @wilb6657 But Specht was flying a FOcke-wulf 190 not a BF 109 in this fight, so it couldn't have been him

  • @wilb6657 Specht was flying a Focke-wulf on this mission not a Me-109, so it couldn't have been him.

  • the question is wil it blend

  • The P-51 was a divine inspiration,imho.

  • this isn't just legendary but also EPIC :)))

  • Bet the 109 pilot was a 100+ -er

  • donald bryan was not mentioned in this episodfor me this is the best dogfight episode ever

  • donald bryan was not mentioned in this episode

  • The P-51 Mustang was a British design plane but gave it to the Americans

  • @XJokerekoP No, it was not. The airframe and it's design is entirely American. The engine was British (Rolls Royce).

  • @XJokerekoP wrong. it was a british REQUESTED plane. they asked for a plane that could do certain things, and North American Aviation designed the mustang. the british added the merlin and then the plane REALLY shined. so it can be said it was a co-operative effort.

  • @XJokerekoP lol you're funny

  • @XJokerekoP no, it wasnt because the fuselage was american and the rolls royce merlin was british

  • dang those p-51s were accurate

  • the 109 pilot is an ace

  • ZERG TACTICS lol. thats the only way the allies won.

  • Loved it. There weren't many pilots left for the Luftwaffe after the war which is why we rarely get their story. That 109 pilot had guts and skill, never backing down once in the face of overwhelming odds. I admire his courage.

  • What I want to know is who was that veteran flyer towards the end? clearly a skilled flyer, must have a hell of a story behind him.

  • Great pilot. Wrong side.

  • de best episode ever

  • This episode is the same as "the legend of Y-29", why to upload it with another name again?

  • A little quick online research revealed that Gunther Specht of JG11 was an experienced Luftwaffe "experte" lost during the attack on Asch. He may have been the 109 pilot, although some sources say Specht was flying a FW190.

  • @williamlasl

Nevermind, just saw that Specht was probably killed by a P-47.

  • This is such an awesome show! They HAVE to make more episodes of this! They should make one about the German pilots flying the Me-109 and Fw-190... From their perspective... And about The Battle Of Britain, from both British and German perspectives... Wtih these awesome recreations it would be sweet to see Spitfire's and Me-109's fighting! Do you know if they are gonna make more episodes of this?

  • wish this would show the accounts from the german pilots too

  • I feel sorry for the German guy... He had the skills to live, yet he didn't.

  • oh great! another great american victory...what a surprise...by 1945 the german planes were probably being flown by newspaper delivery boys....how come this idiotic program never showed the dogfights of german aces like Adolf Galland (104 victories all against western allies) or Erich Hartmann (352 victories!!!) ? american programming has never really moved beyond propoganda...

  • what´s the name of the german ace?

  • To bad theres no good way to surrender at low altitude like that.

  • i kinda feel sorry for the Germans here they all got owned

  • The german Pilot was fighting against the odds...

    but indeed, he had balls...

  • I think JC Meyer can take a lot of credit for the victory that day.

  • One of the fabolous german fighter aces!they never come back.

  • funny, baldy Bob Brullle complains about the german AA to shout upon him even as he was wing-tipping...later in the movie Moates becomes a hero when shooting upon a stricken FW190, even as he went for chicken as he realized some explosions around his plane..thats typical...such documentaries are like the WOCHENSCHAU was, producing heroes....dont get me wrong I dont defend the Nazis but sovereign winners dont need such poppy-cock hero productions

  • @grazyarnie

I have to correct my comment. Brulle wasnt complaining about enemy Flaks, he was pissed off about his own troops...well one quarter of the german planes were killed by friendly fire (blue on blue) so he was lucky to get his plane safe back to the base

  • But unfortunately Hitler decided to use the planes Galland had prepared for the Bodenplatte.

  • They should make a doc about the Schweinfurt/ Regensburg raid!! Operation Bodenplatte was a total failure and waste of resources. Adolf Galland had been planning for a massive attack on the heavy bombers. He had been gathering planes and pilots for his operation to shoot down heavy bombers in large numbers. He was hoping get some thousand fighter planes to engage the american bombers and hoped some 400 to be shot down. That would have stopped the day light bombing offensive!

  • i usually don't cheer for the germans, but that last bF109 pilot was a total badass,

    *salutes*

  • anybody know who wuz the 1009 pilot?

  • @101clockman no we dont know because if they told us then anybody could see how much liers are the guys that speak for the dogfight and how stupid are these history chanels documentaries,of course anybody can realise how easy is for a historian to find who was the pilot, germans keep archives even for the shit they take every day

  • wat skill that me-109 had omg

u wouldnt want to have a 1 on 1 dogfight with that fella!!!

  • i would

  • WOW that was crazy... i was getting chills at points...lol... poor guy should of been able to make it home after all that...lol...

  • dont forget rall

  • yeah and considering the ME-109g was still outdated by the mustang in terms of technoledgy but it all comes down to the pilot

  • Well, at low altitudes the Bf-109G had better manourability (the P-51D would stall in tight turns at low altitude), more or less the same speed and its 30mm MK108 cannon could send the P-51D (or any other fighter) to the ground in one hit. Off course, since the P-51D usually escorted bombers they usually met with Bf´s and Fw´s at mid to high altitude, where the P-51D had the advantage.

  • bet they were egshusted

i would of sed right im nakerd lets put the kettle on

  • It was Possibly Hubert Huss which was piloting an BF-109K4 and shot down by an enemy aircraft. he was KIA

  • me-109 just played cat and mouse game.... hez the pilot

  • показали бы вы как вам пиздюлей дал хартман в румынии

  • the me-109 is the man

  • Damn, that Me-109 pilot was a beast lol, evading 4 Mustangs is pretty insane :)

  • freakin amazing.

  • One of the best parts I've seen out the whole series, big respect to that German Pilot, good to see the dogfights not all one sided in one sense. Would be good too see some German Pilots accounts of their dogfights.

  • A special on Rudel or Hartmann would be cool. Would boost viewers and ratings for History Channel.....

  • @ravernelly you can see this in the episode " secret weapons". A German Me 163 Komet pilot gives account of his dogfight with a British Mosquito.

  • @ravernelly yeqh, but americans never really like the enemy's point of view

  • one bad ass German what was his name?

  • how would I know? Good Pilot none the less...

  • @Historystartsnow

I'll say... balls of solid steel.

  • @Historystartsnow

if he would be an american You would know I am sure...well dont get me wrong but its a good example for the rules of war...there are none and as JCS 1067 showed even POW were none, they were DEF...the young americans fought well and I am glad the Nazis were defeated, but the heroism behind a one agianst four fight is ridiculous and dont honor the USAF.

I love the USA and her people and I love my country...therefore I hate the Nazis..but please dont celebrate the killings

  • @Historystartsnow Gunther Rall, or something.

  • @Historystartsnow

the German Pilots name was Ofw. Franz Meindl, a 31 kill ace. He flew with II.8/JG11.

  • i think it was a guy named gunther specht(?)maybe, idk

  • Not quite. Specht flew a Focke-Wulf 190 and was being chased by a P-47 when he went missing. Specht was then listed as MIA. He had 34 aerial victories to his name.

  • @trav1971 the pilot could of been Günther Specht Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 1.he was known for his amazing piloting skills he lead the attack on y29 and died in that battle.Specht shot down 34 aircraft including 17 heavy bombers. All his victories were recorded over the Western Front and included 15 four-engine bombers.

  • i was ment to say II./JG 11.

  • @geppdude

    Wrong,Gunther Specht was flying a FW 190 A-9.

  • @Raubritter1488 i just said could of been dude

  • @geppdude

I bet that it was Ofw. Franz Meindl or Hauptmann Horst-Gunther Von Fassong, both from JG 11 and flying Bf 109.
