  • I think we all agree, if this game was remade on PS3, with voices, cut scenes, more detail, It would be a hit! But I think Kojima will keep it this way. Its a great classic, I'm glad its on the HD collection. Thanks for the walkthrough, you are very helpful!

  • Something tells me you got a lot more subscribers when you uploaded this review/walkthrough. You did this game justice and B + seems like a solid score (pun may or may not be intentional >_>). Sadly, now that I'm done watching this, I don't know what to do with myself, cuz I WANT THIS GAME SO BAD!!!

  • This game seems harder than the PS2 version. Characters move faster, can't avoid the laser. Maybe it's just me.

  • Metal Gear kill sequence: Right Right Left Right Left Left Right Left Left Right Right Left Right Left Right and the last one Pettrovich forgot is Right

  • Awesome review and walkthrough, as usual! Somehow, I always thought that the NES version was easy, despite its massive flaws in gameplay.

  • Goddamn, I enjoyed bro. Keep it up, and imagine if they would "remake" this for the PS3.

  • I cant believe they actually tried to get you to turn off your game console.... what a bunch of assholes!

  • @Checkmate409 lol, that part was awesome. Naked Snake is a classic piece of shit bad guy.

  • In the NES version, Metal Gear wasn't actally replace by a supercomputer, it was controlled by a Super Computer.

And yes, Big Boss is smoking weed when he betrays his own son, Solid Snake.

  • In the NES version, Metal Gear wasn't actally replace by a supercomputer, it was controlled by a Super Computer.

  • Even though it indeed was disappointment that you don't see even a sign of Metal gear in NES version I still consider it as good NES title. Way better than Snake's Revenge.

Besides, you don't get to fight against Metal Gear in MSX version either but you'll have to put in some bullshit combination with blastic explosives on it's legs so I'll rather take super computer over that shit.

  • @Bastiest I beg to differ, the NES is what Auqalung says pretty hard as fuck.

  • @xxxGreyFoxNinja11xxx It is?

I must've missed the hard difficulty option for NES version then. :P

  • I discovered that translating the game was mediocre and about 40 messages were left out. Aqualung, would you have given the game a better rating if some of those messages were in the English translation?

  • Will you be doing a guide for Metal Gear 2:Solid Snake?

  • his called dirty duck in the PS2 verison

  • Aw, I didn't get Big Boss's last transmission at the end! I waited for several minutes, too.

  • these were awesome dude, nice job really enjoyed watchin em

  • I just use the machine gun in the desert and shoot all the scorpions. Way more fun.

  • You know what I just discovered about Konami. In Japan, they don't just do video games, they also operate sport and health clubs AND operate a real estate business.

  • I love your walkthrough/reviews...always find myself laughing at your great line delivery. I know you're still probably working on the TMNT one, but do you think you'll ever do a walkthrough/review of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake?

  • @SwimmingBird941 He just did.

  • @SwimmingBird941 Yeah Aqualung is talented. I always look forward to watching his playthroughs.

  • This is Big Boss ....Turn You Laptop Off And Go Smoke Some Ganja... Over

  • @namlaofeel If I got high I couldn't put the game down.

  • "This is Big Boss, Aim the Gun at your Head and Fire, Over"

  • i just LoL XD

  • dude hilarious review/walkthrough

    1:43 was freakin' hilarious

  • To prevent the laser cameras from hurting you, switch to the box. When they come near you, stop and move once they pass you. This worked for me with the updated port on the PS2's MGS 3: Subsistence. I don't know if it worked in the original MSX version.

  • big boss was the traitor in the nes version as well

  • Thank you for the walkthrough.

  • nice review/walkthrough, im looking forward to more of your work so i subbed.

  • Coward Duck in Latin America is called Dirty Ramirez))LOL

Anyway, man, that's been a great review, and I have never known that NES MEtal Gear is a clown parody for the real one.

  • as long as yo uhave rations, you dont need the oxygen tank. stay on the far left of the river, and you should get to the end with just a little thimble of health

  • Here is a one little Fact:

In Europe Coward Duck was called Dirty Duck O.o

  • @Fransinn He's also called Dirty Duck in the US version of the PS3 HD Collection

  • Excellent walkthrough, thank you for posting this. :)

  • lol it was a mere nothing?

  • You,re very good, I have no idea how you beat these games.

  • "weave your way around them and go down the elevator..which will take u AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the way down to the 100th floor basement" xD

  • another mistake with the NES version is that the Hind Helicopter was replace with "twin shot." Utter Garbage" is right, Kojima.

Now that I think of it, all the canon Metal Gear games have Hinds in them except Metal Gear Solid 2, but it kinda sucked towards the end.

  • If this version got a B+, I wonder what the NES port would've gotten.

  • i am definitely gonna have to get subsistance to play this

  • If you dont want to pay the now outrageous price for Metal Gear Subsistance you can download a MSX emulator and the Metal Gear 1 and 2 english translated roms for MSX.

  • The B+ was his grade for how well he did at completeing the game. It wasnt the rating for the game itself. :)

  • True, I'm just wondering how he would've graded the NES port since he gave this game a B+.

  • Good Review Do Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake!

  • great review/walk through :P

  • are you going to make a metal gear 2 review/walkthrough

  • It also worked while fighting Metal Gear. :P Although you do have to keep going into the menu to switch out of the box to plant the explosives, the best part is that you can be laying flat on top of it, and it won't do any damage. :D

  • Hey. Just thought you may like to know. In the area with two laser shooting camera's (Not where Jennifer calls you, but the one's you said you didn't know how to pass) Well I'm not sure if it's only because I'm using the subsistence version, but when I was passing them, I equiped the cardboard box and just stayed still, and they payed no mind to me. Just thought you might like to know, or test it for the MSX. :)

  • Hmm this is interesting. I just got done posting a comment above about how I confirmed that the cardboard box doesnt work with those laser cameras, however Im playing the original MSX version using bluemsx emulator. So maybe it was a change for the Subsistence version.

  • you're shiznet like bosox > any mofo team from NY. you think you ever gonna review games for playstation platforms?

  • Great work on this walkthrough Aqualung!

When watching it I kept thinking how the hell would someone know to punch that particular wall to progress? It seems like you would need to run around punching every wall before finding a weak spot. They could have had a better hint such as a crack in the wall or something similar to Legend of Zelda: Link to the past.

  • This game has so many little tricks and traps. I must have set off the truck baddies every time. DAMN THEM! I couldn't figure out what to do at the right time because some of it was just plain ridiculous. Thanks for the walkthrough, I definitely needed it.

  • Oh also in the 2006 re translation Coward Ducks name was changed too Dirty Duck.

Metal Gear 2 has a lot of Boss Name changes as well, if you do that one I'll post what they were.

  • Great work as always Aqualung. You covered what I was going to say about Metal Gear not even being in the NES version. They took out the Hind D too and replaced it with two pussy turret gunners.

Any plans on doing Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake?

  • Too bad the metal gear solid essential collection didn't include the second disc. The original looks really good. I'm gonna have to buy it. As usual Aqua, good walk.

  • I wonder, does the box work on the lazer cameras? Either way, that was a really great walkthough! Give yourself a high five for me!

  • Hmm you may be right. The idea of using the box with the laser cameras might work since they do work on the alarm cameras from earlier.

  • @AqualungGameReviews The box doesn't work. Somehow the cameras can still tell it's you.

  • @AqualungGameReviews I guess by that point the enemies have memorized what the box looks like and programmed the cameras to destroy that as well.

  • lol CONFIRMED: the cardboard box does NOT work with those laser cameras. They shoot at you anyways. I tried it myself.

  • OK I guess it depends on what version you are playing, Someone posted a comment below that the cardboard box DID in fact work but they are playing the Subsistence version and I am playing the original MSX version using bluemsx emulator.

  • @kindaaredneckkindaar Yup this game is one of the hardest out there. 1 guy and when you die you lose all of your progress back to the nearest elevator/checkpoint. He did a really good job. I've never been able to do it without dying or pass that segment with the flashlight and all the pits in one go.

  • I remember playing the NES version, i could never get by the first 5 screens, it came off as dull and confusing. Plus i could not get over that eternal phrase: "I Feel Asleep." I feel asleep playing that game is more like it. Makes me wish the nes version was more like this one now, and another awesome review.

  • Don't complain people. He says so in the video that the MSX version is the true version of Metal Gear, which is why he chose to do it over the NES version I'm sure. Perhaps as a bonus he'll cover the NES version and it's sequel in the future. Who knows? Another great review Aqualung, thanks for your diligence and hard work.

  • Just wondering, what happens if you climb up one of the other ladders?

  • The left ladder goes up several screens, and the other 2 end abruptly, which would in all likelihood hold you off for too long before the timer runs out and you die.

  • Interesting how all boss names except the arnolds describe the boss itself. Well maybe the arnolds are arnold swarzenegger look alikes :P

  • Excellent review and it's interesting that you're reviewing games for other systems as well. Noticed a lot of similarities with MSG actually (more than I had expected). Looks like a very interesting game.

Fun fact: Snake on the of this game is modelled after Michael Biehn.

  • your doing games other then 2600 and nes :) not trying to say that their bad.

  • I played through this game on Subsistence too, but the boss character I fought was called "Dirty Duck" instead of "Coward Duck". At any rate, this is a great game, but it pales in comparison to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake; you gotta do a review of that game. Overall, this was a great review/walkthrough, and as usual, you were very thorough.

  • There were quite a few changes between the original MSX version and the version that went on Subsistence. But most of them were text changes here and there, nothing majorly significant changed to my recollection.

  • Great job, brother! Merry Christmas!

  • I also agree with you that "Coward Duck"/"Dirty Duck" has got to be the worst name for a Metal Gear boss character; I must've laughed out loud the first time I saw it.

  • For the port of Metal Gear 2 in Subsistence, though, all the sprites for the characters' faces were changed to the ones seen in the Japanese cell phone version. So Grey Fox looks more like the creepy albino version from Portable Ops.

  • lol "It'll take you allllllllllllllllllll the way down..." Great Walkthroughs and reviews man, I've seen em' all and they're all great. Please, PLEASE, don't EVER stop doing these reviews! Not even when you 50!

  • Aqualung: Snake's Revenge had some side-scrolling parts to it, but for the most part, the game had an overhead view just like its MSX and NES predecessors. Also, Big Boss WAS the main bad guy in the NES version of Metal Gear 1; the bad guy Vermon CaTaffy never existed. The intrstuction manual writers of Konami of America did the same thing in Snake's Revenge (the main bad guy was called Highrolla Kockamamie, but was really Big Boss).

  • Actually NES Metal Gear 2 was pretty much of a fan product thus it doesn't really even count as Metal Gear, as the even the title doesn't actually carry the name of Metal Gear either even thought it is mentioned in the game itself.

But the fact is that game is unoffical product that was released to celebrate high sellings of Metal gear itself.

Hideo Kojima wasn't a part of the project wich explains why it was most linear Metal gear game ever and fans didn't really like it at all.

  • How can Snake's Revenge be called a "fan product" when it was made by Konami, not to mention the same Konami team responisible for Castlevania 2 and 3 on NES?

  • I stated pretty much everything up above.

Even thought it was made by Konami team, it still wasn't an offical metal gear.

  • Why was your comment graded poor? Everything you are saying is correct. Although I wouldn't call it a "fan product". Konami did make Snake's Revenge but they did so behind Hideo Kojima's back. Hideo Kojima himself said that the NES versions of the first 2 metal gear games were "Utter Garbage" Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake was Hideo's response to Snake's Revenge and is the true Metal Gear sequel.

  • wait that's in mgs3, awesome why didn't I ever notice it :S

  • It's not on the regular version of MGS3, only the Subsistence version. It also has the MSX Metal Gear 2 on the disc.

  • oh subsistence, the one with the better camera, if it has these classics on there I'm definitely gonna have to pick it up, it's cool that they put on the msx versions and not the nes versions

  • It's in the subsistence version disk 2. So if you got the box set of MGS1, 2, & 3; Sorry, you made the same mistake I did.

  • so its in subsistance, I don't have to buy the collection do I?

  • No, you don't need to buy the collection. Just buy Subsistence if you want the MSX games and MGS3 with the better camera.

  • already did ^_^ mgs3 is my favorite game of all time so I got the best deal in the world

  • @AqualungGameReviews I already have metal gear solid 3 is there any other way to get those games?

  • Great game and review, but I've got to tell you, run your emulator in NTSC or find one that does. The game is running slooower than intended.

  • Fuck yes! Aw man even the MSX version, good job. My hats off to you.

  • Awesome job!

  • Great walkthrough/review.
