That was nice...It could use more percussive slap/snap though..I think a lot of people before they get their confidence are a little timid in this regard, when I listen to the masters and to people who have really worked and developed skill, they aren't afraid to let the strings slap, and they aren't so cautious with the dynamics, hopefully I don't sound too critical , cause I enjoyed your performance!
I agree, this is a pretty tentative performance, but I can't see where snapping would work except on that little walk down. Steffan Grossman is kind of the king of snapping, but I don't hear it much on Blind Blake, RGD, or Big Bill who are the masters of this style. Who are you thinking of? I think this needs speed and assertiveness. Maybe I'll rerecord it and try for a stronger sense. Thanks for the suggestion.
I think slapping or not slapping is up to the individual, and how they feel when playing, when I practice I like to practice the full range of dynamics..soft loud, smooth rough, fast slow, and making the transition between the extremes either in quick bursts or very slowly so that from piano to forte is stretched as long as it can take, one thing I see a lot with people who are works in progress is a timidity, maybe they don't feel confident letting others hear them. or maybe they dont want to
maybe they are afraid to hurt the guitar, or have been conditioned to think that anything above a certain level of loudness is bad, but the guitar is a percussive instrument and I like to give it a good strum, a good thump, get the rhythms going, I also try to work on the soft also, of course it is up to the individual, and I don't wanna be too critical on anyone, I like to do exercises that let one gain greater control over those aspects, thanks fo posting this good luck!
No, I find the criticism useful. This is a complicated arrangement, a lot of changes to remember, and I think the tentativeness you notice is due to that. When I play things I don't have to think about, His Latest Flame, or All of Me for example, I play those pretty aggressively because I'm just strumming chords. But they're not very interesting arrangement.
