Liszt's spirituality is personal and emotional. Beethoven's is objective and transcendental. Liszt's music can be sublime in its own way but never in the way that Beethoven is. [cf op 111.2]. The present recording is certainly up there with the greatest!!
@gerardbedecarter why can't personal be objective as well? i think that this is as objective as Beethoven's last sonata's second movement, let's put it better, you cannot compare them, they are both sublimely objective and transcendental.
A sublime work (alas not so often played today), performed by one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. I sometimes have the impression that Liszt must have been in a deep spiritual questioning at the time of composing the whole cycle of the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses. At the same time the influence of the late-Beethoven is very perceptible.
An amazing rendition ! After 20 years of knowing it this version never ceases to amaze me !!!
Arrau: one of the great Liszt interpreters of all times !

@gerardbedecarter
One shouldn't compare because when you are even the slightest aware of they're greatness you don't dear to compare any composer....
the greatest certainly was Beethoven but does it really mater to say whho was the greatest or sth like dat?
Why can't someone just admire and enjoy the absolute incomparable beauty of art...
