Russia supported ZAPU party led by Nkomo, China - ZANU party led by Mugabe. After Rhodesia failed, the China-backed side prevailed. Mugabe came to power and shortly accused Nkomo and ZAPU of military coup. Nkomo escaped the arrest and went to exile, ZAPU was disbanded, 25,000 Nkomo's supporters killed. China remained best friend for life.
