Over the past 25 years refineries have decreased to less than half of what the were in 1981, during that time production dropped 10% due to expansions and upgrades on existing plants, and while between '99 and 2000 US production increased 3%, consumption increased 45%.

Secondly, moron, refined petrochemical products are an international commodity. If US refiners don't refine, than the refined products will be imported from abroad. It's not a lack of US refineries that are causing $4.00/gal gas. $4.00/gal gas only started when oil went up. America or its foreign suppliers can only build as many refineries as there is OIL. The problem is a lack of OIL.
Anwar has about 10 billion barrels of oil which is roughly a years worth of US oil consumption, it won't come online for at least 10 years and it'll hit a peak production around 2025 (of 875 thousand barrels) while at the same time US consumption alone will have increased to a monstrous 35 to 40 million barrels a day. Anwar is not the answer! An investment in renewable energy sources definitely is.

No, that is not correct at all. There is only one quoted price for a barrel of oil and that price is dependent on the entire world demand versus world supply, not US demand and US supply. The USGS recently estimated that the artic contains approximately 90 billion barrels of oil beneath the ocean. Assuming all of that oil was recovered by Exxon/Mobil or Chevron/Texaco, that would satisfy world demand for about three years. That is why drilling is absurd.
The end result is every dollar invested in drilling will yield next to nothing in benefits to the consumer at the pump. However, because the price of oil is so high, every dollar invested will return high yields to the oil companies. So for morons like yourself, you will still be bitching and moaning when you pull up to the gas station 10 years from now.
So what? the oil companies are the only ones going out, investing colossal amounts of money & taking huge risks to get the stuff out of the ground. THEY DESERVE EVERY PENNY THEY GET IN PROFUT - THEY ARE A BUSINESS - BUSINESSES ARE SUPPOSED TO PROFIT. I don't see you going out there to get it. Unlike domestic products like tomatoes, increasing the production of oil here in the U.S. has only a marginal effect on the domestic price of gas because our contribution to the global pool of oil is relatively small. If that is a hard concept to grasp, go take a class in economics.
Oil companies are neither patriotic or stupid enough to billions investing in new oil wells only to sell it at a price that is even one penny lower than the global market price.

Just look at all the closures and merges that have occurred since 1999, not to mention the production decreases. Over the past 25 years refineries have decreased to less than half of what the were in 1981, during that time production dropped 10% due to expansions and upgrades on existing plants, and while between '99 and 2000 US production increased 3%, consumption increased 45%.
And, again environmentalists aren't preventing refineries from being built, just where and how they're built.

It's not a lack of US refineries that are causing $4.00/gal gas. $4.00/gal gas only started when oil went up. America or its foreign suppliers can only build as many refineries as there is OIL. Anwar has about 10 billion barrels of oil which is roughly a years worth of US oil consumption, it won't come online for at least 10 years and it'll hit a peak production around 2025 (of 875 thousand barrels) while at the same time US consumption alone will have increased to a monstrous 35 to 40 million barrels a day. Anwar is not the answer! An investment in renewable energy sources definitely is.

No, that is not correct at all. There is only one quoted price for a barrel of oil and that price is dependent on the entire world demand versus world supply, not US demand and US supply. The USGS recently estimated that the artic contains approximately 90 billion barrels of oil beneath the ocean. Assuming all of that oil was recovered by Exxon/Mobil or Chevron/Texaco, that would satisfy world demand for about three years. That is why drilling is absurd.

Burning more oil is not the answer to our energy crisis. Neither is putting more CO2 in our atmosphere. We need more Nuclear, wind, solar, and people please conserve. Do you really need to drive as much? I went from 1000 miles a month down to 200. Not too hard to do.

BTW, other countries can drill off of our coast as long as they are in international waters which is just 12 miles off our coast.

rpmartin01, I understand your point, but the point I'm making is that we already have enough domestic oil available to us right now. We don't need new or more areas to drill for oil, we need the capacity to refine what we already have access to.
While we've lost 15% of our refining capacity, oil companies have not invested in building new refineries, upgrading the refineries we have to process the over abundance of shale oil or in the technology to improve the process.
The EEZ is 200 miles.
