I had heard so much about this movie I was excited to catch it on TV late one night, totally disappointed alot of hype that did not deliver.....2 thumbs down:(
The best author ever...Charles 'mother fucking' Bukowski....Degenerate, Asshole Extraordinare, Raging Alcoholic, Eccentric Enigmatic Author and just all around fucking RAWSOME!!!! This guy has written my absolute favorite books ever. Ham on Rye is an extraordinary book. Women (the basis for the Hank Moody character in Californication) is a great piece of autobiographical fiction. Factotum is a close 2nd favorite along with Post Office and Notes of a Dirty Old Man. All Hail and Long Live The Buk

@sisak1987 I saw this when I was 17, on video tape, probably six months after its theatrical release. I have to say, it was an eye opener. I loved it. It just moved me and made so much sense to me. It still does. Take Care.
you know someone is a good actor when not only does the character not sound like the actor but niether looks nor carries the same mannerisms as the actor.

This flick features terrible fucking acting by Rourke. Bad writing. A real bomb. Fay Dunaway looks like she can't wait for the movie to wrap in every dull scene.
He was a man beaten in childhood into a young man that loved life but had no clear hope of ever having what he loved, so aspired only to make his art regardless of what we argue. So to make a movie about this person is a faliure because he would not care if you made a movie about him or about a dog. as long as he got the money and the young blondes. he would let you take a shit on his face. If you want a conversation talk about what I say not the image of me that you masturbate to at night
if your talking about Charles Bukowski I think maybe your interpretatioin a little off, your impression is yours, thats fine, but it doesnt really reflect Bukowski....or Henry Chinaski.
i watched this movie today and i noticed charles bukowski sitting at the bar when henry meets wanda, he gives henry a weird look as if to say, who the fuck do you think you are!
This movie makes me want to die just so I can roll over in my grave. That fact that they even make movies about bukowski is a failure in the wings. How can you ever hope to make an honest depiction of someone who doesn't subscribe to anything. It is literally in-understandable.
Doesn't subscribe to anything? Your lights are one, but your lights are dim. Let met guess. You're 18 and you just recently discovered Post Office? Bukowski had a strong moral code and much strength. Saying he subscribed to nothing is just an idiotic thing to say.
I dont recognize that NOFX line. What one is it from and when did it come out? This movie came out in 1987 and was originally written in the 60's. How about "missing the alchol".
I think Rourke was closer to Hank than he liked. Hank could be a mean slightly deranged son of a bitch when he was tanked. As far as some of the flourishes Rourke used, it was just to add flavor and interest to the character. Thats Hollywood. Still a great film and Buke's script shines through.

Barfly is one of the best films of 1987. It stars Future oscar-winner Mickey Rourke who'll makes a grand return in The Wrestler. And Previous Oscar-winner Faye Dunaway who has some very sexy legs & feet in this story about 2 boozers in love. Based on a great story by Charles Bukowski. Great movie look for it on DVD
@kax61 I've owned around 6 VHS copies - I keep giving them away. When the film came out in 1988 I rented it so often from the shop in my town and no one else ever rented it, so the owner just gave it to me. My nephew has a copy; one copy wore out - I've puked and partied with this film - 14 years of drinking before the DT's - there be but one Hank, the best writer who's ever lived. The guy still makes me giggle and fight on - and it all started with this film.
that trailer has inspired me not to see it. if mickey rourke re-did it now it'd be great, but in this he seems limp as fuck. hank's screenplay is the only thing carrying it. sorry if you love the movie, but that's opinion for ya. thanks
while i agree that matt dillon's impression of hank sucked really bad, i think mickey rourke's interpretation of bukowski's character was pretty decent. could have been a little rougher and less romantic in his way of talking, but i doubt bukowski himself would have liked ANY actor portraying him. also i wouldn't exactly call rourke a pretty boy... dillon though? definitely
You sure? I've never heard of an actor called Matt Dillon (a boyish pin up yeah, but an actor???) I much prefer Mickey - thought Matt Dillon was a pale comparision: Mickey rules!
They say that the Luka Modric is the better player then Boban but i dont now that.Boban is a genious!Tonight about 1 milion people sing, drink and dance and republic is in depp shit. But everyone go crazy when football is playing!!Lets go Yankees!!

A major studio would not go near a project like this at the time, knowing that Schroder wanted Mickey Rourke in the lead. Once production begun, Bukowski visited the set and witnessed Rourke rehearsing the apartment shadow boxing scene. He knew at that moment that this man has got it, although deep dowm he wanted an actor who was a drinker. The rumour has it that Mickey Rourke drank 7up with his biker pals at the premiere.

Lol, in "Hollywood" he writes how Faeh demanded a scene be written into the movie that showed off her legs...she did have great legs tho.
But I'm not feeling Rourke's Bukowski. He seems too soft.
He did nail the Sin City character Marv though...which always kinda reminded me of Bukowski. I'll bet Frank Miller read Buk.
