@FantasticBabblings Last time I was there two years ago, they were still $1. That's the potato knish. There are other kinds. McDonalds & other fast foods should sell potato knishes. Cheap to make and heavenly to eat. Somewhat related is the latke. This is not exclusively Jewish food. It's also Scandinavian food. Those wandering Swedes come up with much of this. :)
So it seems there are some good things in the 90s, 100s, and 110s. I've been trying to find an apartment up in the 70s and 80s but it seems most of the bargains are out there in the 100s.
If you are still looking for a place then be careful when get get into the 90's - 110's . There is a reason there are bargains there. The realtor won't tell you about the projects in the 90's between Amsterdam / Columbus. We almost made a huge mistake with a place at 96/ Amsterdam.... Now were on 78th and couldn't be happier... We found a great bargain this past May. Good Luck
Yes, I know. I will take the link out of the description and make a note of it. I used to go there often when I lived on the West Side. I noticed a few months ago that it was gone. And Cafe des Artistes (not a cheap place to be sure) closed recently.
i really liked the video... the part in Fairways was hilarious... and the calm tone of the narrator was nice... some nice shots of the city, i thought...!
Last week Anthony Bourdain opened his new season on Travel Channel with a show titled "Disappearing Manhattan." He went to some of the old independent restaurants and bemoaned how so many have closed. Change is good sometimes, but not always. Some of us still care. Thanks for watching.
The Dakota. I work w/ a guy who lives there. He's a peculiar 20 something who lives w/ his parents but I'm trying to befriend him just so I can go inside and see the place myself. I know that's awful but it is the top building on my list that I want to see the inside of before I die. I'm 33 by the way, so God willing, I have some years ahead of me.
entertaining video! my names Destiny, kinda feelin bored if any1 wants to join me on cam or wana chat i will be signed on at __ FriendlyFlirts(.COM) __ my user ID there is Destiny_vueqmldqsx chat soon xx its FR33 to j0in! mwah
I found this video before the other, but am just now commenting. Great vid! Fairway is (was) my favorite grocery store. I'd stop there at least once a day. It grew three times present size during my time in the city. It was a great place to people watch. if you are a "celebrity" hunter, you could see them acting like the rest of us (as they are like anyone else) here at Fairway.
Great NYC on the cheap vids. Will be in the city for my 4th visit since '03 on March 20-24. Always on my list is Chinese and Wine (Silk Road Palace) between 81st and 82nd on Amsterdam. Also love the chicken kabobs with hot sauce on the street and enjoying a carafe of wine in Grand Central. Will also try to make some of your recommendations, especially in the Village. I really enjoyed how you gave some of the history of the sites you showed.
What do you think this is a feature film? Of course I left out tons of things. You expect all of New York to be in one YouTube vide? These are just some of my favorites.
Wow man this was really informative. I want to live in the Upper West Side one day so I'm always over there. I will definitely check out some of those spots and it's good to see that you positively critiqued the places where I eat!
went past cafe la fortuna in july 2006 whilst on my honeymoon, john lennon use to go there nearly every day,and there are pictures in the window and inside of him and yoko, all in all its a bit of a shrine.(wonder if they might be trying to cash in a little)I didnt go in and im a big beatles fan, just seemed a little too sickly to do so.
I used to live on West 70th and so Sunday I decided to see if there were any videos in my old neighborhood.
I typed in Upper West Side and there was your travelogue. When the video got to Freddie and Pepper's Pizza, I thought about my old friend that I hadn't seen in 27 years. His name was Freddie too. Then I saw the guy behind the counter and guess what? It was my old friend Freddie. I called Freddie and Peppers and he and I have been reunited along with my other friend who is a friend of his.
Understated and informative. I love this video and look forward to the others. I especially enjoyed learning about Alice's Teacup and La Caridad, just to name a couple. For someone who loves New York as much as I do, this hits the spot!
Yeah that video made go look in the fridge. Thanks Phil as always well done and informational and kind of you to take the time......your quite go at it actually.
Great video, I love this city more than I can say. I see wew are running in the same circles, as you showed all my favorite morningside Heights spots, except you missed "Cafe Pertutti". Have you ever eaten there, and if so what do think? Also have you been to "Havanna Central"?
I know where Cafe Pertutti is, but I've never eaten there. I have been to Havanna Central, but I considered it out of the price range of this tour. It also feels a bit like a chain restaurant, although I liked the food.
Thank you Phil, that was a wonderful video... The atmosphere of going to new and exotic places was marvelous, which unlike many long videos not once found me glancing at the clock to see how much time was left... If I ever come to New York it would seem pointless if Val and I did not spend some time with you as our guide...
Many of these offer vegetarian choices, and Ayurveda Cafe is strictly vegan. It isn't easy to find vegetarian restaurants; New York is a carnivorous town.
i love this. my fave. things is doccumentarys. its my fave in the world. the kid i watch, i make him watch thigns like the weathermen underground, and expose's on teh spelling bee. this is just my fave. thing on youtube right now. as always uncle phil, you impress, and dazzel me. you never cease to amaze me. and always will be my all time fave youtuber.

Yum! Thanks, Phil. I just booked my hotel for 777 and now I'm excited about the dining options. Never been north of about 83rd so it was a real treat seeing these places. Now I'm off to snack on something. :) - Mike
Thanks, Jimmy. I love making these vids because I love my city so much. Even after 29 years I still get excited when I go out and walk around this great place. I can't wait until July to meet you. I finally met Terry last week. What a great time that was!
I can't wait either! As it turns out, I may even be living there again by July, but August is probably more accurate. I'll still be at "The Gathering" regardless, though. Thanks Again for this series! And Remember--Shiny is Good! ;)
I am not going to be able to attend the NYC gathering. But I just wanted to tell you how great I think these vids are. Very interesting, Please don't stop making them! Even after 777, you could take us to different places in NYC. Oh, please, take us with you!~~Lanette
We'll miss you, Lanette. I'm glad you enjoy the vids, and I will keep on telling New York stories after 777. I'll be down in your part of the country next week (Greenville, SC) to visit family. There will be plenty of good food down there, too! Thanks for watching.
