  • Welcome to our game. We call it (the game where the big men fly)

  • Players do have positions...

  • You think the shorts they now are short? Just wait till you you footy in the 80's or earlier!

  • the link is good youtube.com/watch?v=cN5zpWzuWRg

  • if you like the high flying marks - look up videos of 'Tony Modra' former Adelaide Crows champion..also spent some time playing with Fremantle

  • Great to see you watching the game!

They do have positions! lol Its highly structured as well!

  • Hey it's good to see Aussie Rules making an impact through america, you guys do play the game but it's still very low key, as far as i know. I'm loving the season so far, the Eagles are flying especially after delivering that belting to the Bulldogs.

  • This is our favourite video, welcome to the family! (did you pick teams for ya'll yet?)

  • great seeing u learn our great sport

  • @MrFridayNightDelight Thanks. I'm very excited for tomorrow!

  • Fantastic video! I love the game being an Australian and it is really nice to see you learning it. :)

  • @specials29 Thank you very much! Can't wait until the new season starts so I can learn a lot more!

  • @INcampaign they do have positions you have defenders, midfielders and forwards and they are broken into more positions but I know what you mean because you get alot of freedom to run around but a defender is accountable for is forward opositions player so you would'nt start in the midfield cause thats means they have no one defending against them.I am a north melbourne supporter :) you should check out videos on boomer harvey also known as brent harvey he is my faviourt player.

  • Launch themselves onto an opponents shoulders to kick the ball, are you serious?

That's about as possible as the collingwood fans having enough money to fix there teeth.

  • @Essendon060 I did make many mistakes in this video, which I apologized for in the comments and in the follow-up video. I'm very new to this game and hope to keep learning all I can.

  • north melbourne have the least amount of fans and are super broke

players get retarded every weekend at night clubs as they are not drug tested

fans of other teams are refereed to as 'flogs'

players engage in gang bangs with other players gf's etc...

clubs could tank games in order to gain preference draft picks

the afl continually changes the rules, much to the fans distaste

the afl administration is hated by all fans

    umpires are known as maggots

jack watts is the softest player in the league

  • @craigy0609 That doesn't sound particularly pleasant, but thank you for letting me know. I never would a have understood some of those terms otherwise.

  • @GryceBibbs That's so great that they're doing that! And while I suppose it's nice to have too many teeth for something...what about that poor guy with the missing tooth? ;)

  • @INcampaign Ha ha! That's a comedian called Andy Lee who knocked a few teeth out playing Ice Hockey. One less tooth is still good enough for Megan Gale.

  • @GryceBibbs I know it's silly, but the idea of Australian ice hockey is kind of funny to me. Like Canadian volleyball. The environments you picture in your head just don't match up.

  • There is comps in North America. I recall an American girls team came out a few years ago and played some Aussie Womens games, google Aussie Rules USA

  • @trenq13 I love that girls play, too. Those must be the toughest girls ever.

I was really surprised when I found out how many teams there are here! Too bad I found out too late to go see any games :(

  • marry me

  • @nimchief But what if we root for different teams? How will we make it work?

  • @INcampaign support North Melbourne and there won't be a problem :)

  • @nimchief I'm leaning towards the Suns, I'm sorry. :( I guess picking out china patterns was a waste...

  • @INcampaign haha there's something else you should probably know! in Australia we barrack for our teams. root means....well.....something else here lol! BTW you should go for Essendon ;)

  • @tsadah OH NO! I looked it up.... I'm very sorry. I won't say that in Australian company anymore. I don't think I can say "barrack", though. Even thought it's pronounced differently, it's still too close to our President to not feel weird. Is cheer ok or is that bad, too?

I think we'll go with the Suns. They're new and so are we, so it makes sense.

  • @INcampaign I'm disappointed. After posting all the links to Geelong videos on your facebook page, I thought it would be enough to persuade you to support Geelong. Guess I'll have to try harder next time! ;)

  • @INcampaign Support the Hawks :)

  • This is great, glad to hear people realise how much we love our national sport down here.

Your description of handballing is crazy cute and spot on as well!

  • @PTizzleAusGN Thank you very much!

  • this awesome! a little bit off with a few things, the players not having positions, hey kinda do,and the high marks thing is just "a mark" but you don't really launch yourself onto shoulders to kick the ball, just catch it.I am Australian but was in America for the grand final and watched it with a bunch of Brits and Americans.. they were totally confused haha.Your discription of Handballing is awesome :D And your look of accomplishment at remembering all the teams haha ..

  • @thepokey Thank you! I have since learned better. I made a follow-up that is posted as a video response to this one.

You must have been really desperate to see the Grand Final, considering how late it was on! I got really sleepy trying to stay up, I ultimately had to record the rest.

    Thank you :)

  • if you like the marks or want to see what she means search for gary moorcroft and sit back as you watch a man launch into outer space

  • @heffnos74 OH MAN! That was SPECTACULAR!!! Thank you SO much for sharing! We posted a video of it to our Facebook page so all our followers may also watch with wonder!

  • @heffnos74

Can't forget about Shaun Smith back in 1995. That was a beauty.

  • @sedgwickranger I think, considering she loves handballing so much, and Geelong were the team who handballed the most during the 2010 season, that it'd only be natural that she became a Geelong supporter. ;)

  • Favourite team INcampaign?

  • @hoever06 I've only seen parts of the Grand Final and the replay, plus a few highlights. I don't think it's fair to pick until I see all of the teams play :)

  • @INcampaign Can I suggest one? v=qQLQEL66U8A

  • @hoever06 Very impressive! I'm still not choosing yet :)

  • @INcampaign Oh and you know the only choice to go for is the Essendon Bombers :D v=OXs9r4NfitA&

  • Good on you for trying to get into the greatest sport on Earth. There are some great videos on youtube to watch - I highly recommend all the Gary Ablett highlight reels. Enjoy it and if you have any questions ask away and I'm happy to help!

  • @aus5892 Thank you! I will certainly check some out.

  • Really enjoyed this. Love your enthusiasm. :)

  • @njddonners22 Thank you very much!

  • cool vid :)

  • @showdownhero Thank you!

  • Please flog our game on your American streets and on your people. Bribe them, threaten them; I don't care - I just want our game known (:

  • @ilkfc123 Haha! I will do my best. When they start watching and then ask where the money is that I promised them, I'll tell them to ask you, ok?

  • @INcampaign They'll have to come over to Oz and find me first ;D

  • Well done!

  • @nickz1r Thank you!

  • I have seen clips of it years ago and would find it hard to understand.

It does look good, the event.

  • @BarryAldridge It's certainly a lot to keep up with. I haven't gotten the hang of it yet, but it's very enjoyable. You're a big soccer....er....football fan, though, right?

  • @INcampaign Oh yeah I still watch an odd game every now and then.

  • @BarryAldridge Cool :)

  • I feel bad for you.

Having to watch St. flood play...

Go watch the 2007 or 2009 GF to see how a real team does it.

  • @biggy1189

Isn't there a year in between???

    :)

  • @Poloropo

No. Everyone was on vacation then.

  • @biggy1189 They did well enough to tie in the first one, but in the replay.....ouch.

  • @iipiantissimo Thank you. I will totally check that out, it sounds incredible!

  • @BombersHeat Thanks for the tip! I will definitely check some out.

  • @sedgwickranger Thank you! My learning definitely doesn't end here, and I can't choose a team until I've seen all of them play. It wouldn't be fair :)

  • Good video, australian football is a complicated game but you seem to have a good grasp on the game given you've only known it for a few days. Go tiges.

  • @mjdvfc Thank you! I can't wait to fully understand it!

  • Good work anyway, I think it's great you learnt about our fantastic game! :)

  • @Alex28282828 Thank you! I'm really enjoying learning about it still.

  • strewth, are some of you blokes fair dinkum? this sheila did a bewt job of learning about the game in such a short space of time.

  • @riotguuy Thank you...I think?

  • you tube - Brendon Goddard or Liam Jurrah? For the best to high marks of 2010

  • @Mannequinright Will do, thanks!

  • You picked a fantastic first game of Aussie Rules to watch. The first Grand Final was one of the best of the year.

Your analysis was pretty entertaining/funny to listen to. Thanks

  • @willmcc I know, what a crazy time to discover the sport! Thank you!

  • does this mean you will be supporting the premiers from now on? :D

  • @mazza223

    Needs a few teeth missing.

  • @mazza223 Tempting, but I haven't decided who to support yet. I have to see all the teams play first, it's the only fair way to pick :)

  • Nice vid.

    Go Tiges!

  • @Jellybeantiger Thank you!

  • You did brilliantly. Very well done.

  • @DrShotgunMD Thank you very much!

  • Your analysis is gorgeous, and it's great to see your description of handpass or also known as hand balling. Keep up your interest in the AFL as it is a unique game to Australia, if you wish to know more, dont be shy to ask :-)

  • @gianniecarmela Thank you very much! I don't see my interest fading anytime soon. I can't wait until March!

  • i love americans

  • @ausnproud I hope that's not sarcastic... :) Even if it is, on behalf of Americans, we love Australians, too.

  • You got most of it right.

But these high marks are actually about catching the ball rather than kicking it.

    Good job

  • @anobody911 Darn. Oh well, it is so amazing either way!

    Thank you.

  • Cool. Hope you keep watching our great game in the future.

  • @Knackers20 Thanks, I will!

  • You picked a hell of a game for your first AFL match.

And another tidit, the Victorian Football League (then the VFA) has existed for 50 years longer than the NFL.

  • @Unotuchable Haha, I know! Crazy timing.

    That's very interesting!

  • I think she did a brilliant job. The players DON'T have positions. They did up until 8 years ago. The positions are just historical relics.

The AFL should bring you out to Australia.

  • @camtinley Thank you very much! Oh dear, now I'm quite confused. Although, I must say I would feel better if they don't have positions :)

Thank you! That would be, for lack of a better phrase, about the coolest thing ever.

  • Take it easy fightingfury9. She's done a great job learning that much in a short time. Well done.

  • @raskdog Thank you very much!

  • Cool video. I must admit you're the first American I've heard who's actually pronounced Geelong correctly too. Most Americans tend to emphasise the "Long" part, but you nailed it!

  • @winty76 Thank you! Oh, I'm so glad! It was really important to me to say it right. I'm very pleased *that* source was right :)

  • Great video. The biggest negative of the AFL is that we have never taken the game to the rest of the world but im told that is about to change. Keep learning, your interest in AFL has sparked my interest in the 30 days of learning, cheers!!

  • @christoooh76 Thank you! I can't believe isn't not already internationally popular. I wish I'd found out about it sooner, it's so great!

Thank you, I'm so glad! What did you decide to learn?

  • positions:

left back pocket / full back / right back pocket

left half back / centre half back / right half back

left wing / centre / right wing

left half forward / centre half forward / right half forward

left forward pocket / full forward / right forward pocket

    ruckman / rover / rover

    + 4 on the bench

left/right half backs and half forwards also known as half back flanks or half forward flanks

some positions arent strict though, eg the wingmen often just play as midfielders (centre/rovers)

  • @TomatoBasil23 and the ruckmen and rovers, like the centre, play all over the ground, ie basically midfielders

  • @TomatoBasil23 Thank you for explaining! It will be a while before I can tell the difference between them, but I'm looking forward to really understanding the game!

  • Can't beat Aussie Rules.

As I'm sure someone has said, there are some set positions such as the ruckman, but many players move around the ground a lot. Unlike some sports where you have a designated kicker or punter, any player can play anywhere on the field.

The game speed and tackling has increased a lot in recent years, and some games just seem like swarms of players around the ball, especially in a Grand Final when everything is on the line.

Hope you continue to watch our great game.

  • @qazplm1029384756 I must keep watching! It certainly is the fastest sport I've ever watched. I can't wait until March when I can really start learning!

  • Good stuff. You should come out to Oz to watch a game live :)

  • @BarneyMcFly Thank you! Oh man, I would LOVE that. If I haven't said this word enough already, that would be awesome! :)

  • love the enthusiasm :)

  • @iannowa Thank you!

  • Looks like you've discovered the greatest sport on Earth. Based on attendance per capita, as you said, AFL is head and shoulders above any other sport in the world, and the AFL Grand Final is annually the highest attended domestic sporting final in the world (ahead of Superbowl and the English Premier League). And despite all this, not many people know what it is. Glad to see it's caught your attention! On my channel I've made a video of highlights from the year if you're interested to see more.

  • @21Rally It's so engaging, I don't really understand why it isn't more internationally popular! I think this is the beginning of an obsession, so I'll be sure to soak up all I can.

  • There are 22 players for each team during a game. 18 players on the field with 4 on the bench. I can show you a brief outline of the positions.

Left Back Pocket Full Back Right Back Pocket

Left Half Back Centre Half Back Right Half Back

    Left Wing Centre Right Wing

Left Half Forward Centre Half Forward Right Half Forward

Left Forward Pocket Full Forward Right Forward Pocket

    Ruckman Ruck Rover Rover

    Bench, Bench

    Bench, Bench

  • @jaaaasonnnnn Thank you for explaining!

  • They do have positions love lol. Go to afl.com.au and learn about the game :)

  • @crouchy2010 Drat. Misled by Wikipedia! I'm sorry for my mistake. I will definitely learn the real rules, because it looks like the coolest sport I've ever seen. You seem like a big fan, any other tips for someone just learning?

  • Cool video. Aussie Rules is great. Go Pies!

  • sorry but you dont have a clue about this game

  • @fightingfury9 It seems so. I'm terribly sorry for any/all inaccuracies. I should have known better than to trust Wikipedia. I just got so excited about the game that I wanted know everything about it immediately. I'll go learn the real rules and then finally watch the grand final replay (I recorded it)!

  • @INcampaign You've got nothing to apologise for. Wasn't your fault wikipedia led you astray. Also not your fault fightingfury9 is a douche. You did fine. :)

  • @winty76 Haha, thank you very much!

  • @INcampaign yeh no worries i was a bit harsh

  • @fightingfury9 Thanks :)

  • @fightingfury9 ease up, she learn about this within a couple of days, literally.. fair effort

  • @fightingfury9 Bit harsh there, fella. For a person watching it for the first time, she doesn't do too badly at all.

  • @babakew @TomatoBasil23 Thank you both for your support! I understand wanting someone to get the facts straight when it comes to your favorite sport, and I'm not discouraged by his dissatisfaction :)

  • @babakew yeh fair enough mate

btw lads im hssb on bigfooty

  • @TurtleSandwich Thank you! I can't believe I'd never heard of this sport until last week. I had no idea what I'd been missing!
