Actually I have loved his music since I was young.at that time people were so surprised at his so contemporary analysis playing, compare with segovia style.but now this video is upsetting me
how the classical guitar music can be art.of course his Dahmann guitar as well.sorry Im a poor speaker of English.but I can not stop to saying what Im impressed of this video.
Interesting comments regarding guitars here.I've heard Manuel live and even looked
at his guitar.I've heard a Smallman too and can say that the Dahmann sounds warmer. The Smallman characteristic "loud" that everyone keeps talking about is a metallic, glassy,& wirey type sound. To each their own.I prefer warmth rather than bright any day of the week.
Barrueco is amazing! I was lucky enough to see him perform with the Utah symphony. He has the ability to play flawlessly but at the same time make it sound human, not mechanical. I also got to speak with him during intermission & he's a pretty relaxed guy.
Looking at that guitar though, the rosette looks like the Dammann to me...the headstocks of the Dammann and Ruck are very similar, but isn't that a Dammann rosette?
My friend you are mistaken, a real musician would say MB-s 1972 Ruck by far the superior instrument. Maybe not for volume but for musicality its superior no doubt. Also DR-s Gilbert was far better than his current Dammann...just compare the 2 recordings on his discs and theres just no contest. BTW> i am a guitar maker
@drviscus im sure this guy can afford pretty much any guitar, he is definately a real musician and hes playing a dammann..... it really is taste in the end
@AlvarWolff Damman guitars have nothing in volume compared to the new-age Australian guitars and other lattice braced models. I heard Manuels guitar in a small room a couple of months ago played next to a students Lissarrague in a master class and Manuel had nothing in volume compared to the Lissarrague.
Sound quality is another discussion topic, but I doubt there was a $43,000 difference in tone between the Kim Lissarrague and Damman (Lissarague $7,000 Damman $50,000?).
@macmanue this is downright bull. Or you have very bad ears. Well made are still among the loudest guitars, they just have more traditional tones as well since the objective is a 'lighter' soundboard not thinner (hence nasal tones).
Objective bias is exactly why you would perceive one guitar louder than another. Blind tests continue to reveal a VERY close comparison of perceived volume among double tops, traditionals and lattice built guitars.
@macmanue I've owned several lattices including a Smallman clone built by the only apprentice Smallman has had in his shop (besides his sons). I've compared with people that own both the Smallman and the guitar just mentioned and they too admit there's barely a difference, just normal variance. I own a double top now, and while its not a "loud" character as in its tone, it projects as well as the best does for a guitar. Price doesnt dictate volume either.
@Dhammawitt Who is the only apprentice of Smallman apart from his sons? I only know of one, and that is Eugene Philp. He made beautiful guitars. Sadly he passed away in the late 90s. Although I liked the sound of the Dammman guitar, my humble opinion was that it is not worth $50,000 (Unless you have that money to throw around!) and it was definitely not a 'loud' guitar. I admit the tone is fuller, but in terms of volume, it is definitely not as loud as the lattice guitars I've heard!
@macmanue I've owned Philp and Ian Kneipp (worked with Philp). It was actually Kneipp which did a closer clone than Philps which sounded warmer than a typical lattice, not as dry. I've seen guitars in the $3500 range louder than some $15k + guitars, but they greatly lacked refinement. Volume isn't everything. I've also learned that "volume" is also a characteristic of the tone but doesnt always suggest projection.
@macmanue They've done blind tests comparing some Bernabes against a Smallman where the volume difference was indistinguishable. Traditionals tend to not have as much, but a few are built and tuned efficiently enough to have great power and volume. My Sato had fuller volume than my double top, but with a less traditional tone at a cost. Smallmans price are no bargain, range is around $30,000, up to $35,000. I have friends that own used Dammanns for less <$27,000. Neither is 'worth' it.
@Dhammawitt To be honest, I have only heard 1 Damman in my life, so I guess my statement was pretty bold. Fair enough, I won't say lattice guitars are far louder than all Dammans, but hearing Manuel play his Damman next to someone play a lattice Lissarrague, I can assure you that particular Lissarrague had MUCH more volume than his Damman. But as we know, each guitar is unique. I have also played a friends Kneipp which I loved & I currently own a Philp, so perhaps I am bias to lattice guitars :)
@macmanue My Philp was from early 90's I believe. Kneipp was '97 or '98..Kneipp was much closer to Smallman, Philp had warmer feel, a bit spanishy but not as loud. I've owned a few other lattices, none of which are considered VERY loud, just about the norm though. Lattice is just a technique, some are very daring (smallman) and some just use it as a bracing (navarro, woodfield) the latter won't have as extreme volume/loss of tone. Lissarragues was very nice in the former style.
@macmanue The theory behind lattice's volume is to have the thinnest top but structurally strong and sides and back thick enough not to transfer the vibration but to keep it on the top. This works, but haven't played/heard a thin top lattice w/o the nasal or modern tone. Double tops theory is getting top significantly lighter, therefore easier transference of vibration to the top. Double tops and Lattices are among the loudest guitars. To say a lattice was far louder is out of context.
can someone tell me whats the name of this wonderfull piece im in love with it and i would love to hear it played maybe in other instruments, even though my favourite its the guitar
Would you by any chance have his stirring rendition of The Long and Winding Road (Beatles) that he did with the London Symphony Orchestra? Have been trying to find it everywhere. Cheers, this was exquisite.

i've been in Manuel's studio in his home, there are many guitars there. the Ruck stays mostly in a case with the strings loosened!
