@MrGdawg818 hi, im Jesse and im an intermediate dog trainer. this is sord of a catch and correct trick. what most people do is grab their paws and toss them down or shove them away with their foot and thats not the correct way. what you need to the next time he jumps on you, stand still with no eye contact or expression. as soon as he sits or stops, give him a treat or praise him but for sure he'll jump on you again. when that happens, take away your expression and do the same thing
@MrGdawg818 repeatedly until your dog just cets the concept of what your trying to correct. dont exceed this training over 12 minutes but do this 3-4 times a day until you can see that you have correct this behavior. i hope this helps
My 1 year old Black Lab female is too hyper for the play pen. She easily jumps over. (She has springs for feet) She can jump over 5 ft high from standing still. She is such a good dog other than her excited jumping. should I try "sit" and "stay" or does this just add to the excitement?
Would it work just as well if you set your dog up in the stay position and reward for remaining calm and ignoring when she leaves the stay? Just wondering, cause I was planning on making sure my dog has the "stay" down first before introducing her to manners when guests arrive. Then I was going to have a friend come over and, if she stays, I reward her. But, if she gets up and tries to get attention from my friend, he will ignore her until she goes back to her stay. I reward her again at stay.:)
My dog gets so excited she falls over and has a seizure when people so much as knocks on the door.. (don't yell at me we took her to a vet and he said that there was nothing he could do about it.)
@tab289 my 7 month old shiba inu keeps on biting me whenever I try to put her into her cage at night or when I do something she likes and i stop her, to add on, i tried the ouch method or timeout but it does not seem to work, so is there any other methods to curb this behavior. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH :D

Hey um I know that u train ur dog to be polite and all and I'm considering getting a German Shepherd but I wanna know how to make him into a good gaurd dog? I want to have a good gaurd dog that will protect home and not try to escape whenever it sees the gate open but at the same time I want a best friend and intelligent. I'm willing to put the time in. Can u make a video how to train ur dog to be a gaurd dog but still ur best buddy? Thanks love ur videos btw.
have just started this technique with my 2 mini daschunds. Have a few questions: You say to eventually have people approach the pen and pet, but my dogs are so low to the ground that they would almost have to stand up on their back legs to be greeted. Any ideas?
2nd question: Do you ever let your dog out of the pen int he presence of guests? if so when and how
You use clickers a lot. If I use the clicker to train my puppy, do I have to use the clickers forever? Or can I get my dog to do any tricks I teach it without continuing with the clicker, but still rewarding them? Also, can I use the clicker while also teaching the dog to perform from words such as "come" "stay" "sit" "shake" etc by just clicking when they do the trick correctly?
@tab289 I am getting a dog tomorrow and I'm very excited cause I have wanted one since I was 6! And I'm 12 so I have a question what type of leash do u recommend? Plzz answer as soon as u can! And thx for those great videos I have learned A LOT!
@oscart0918 your dog should probably sleep inside its the safest! But anyways if u take him for a walk before he goes to sleep, there should be no problem during the night
Hello tab I bought a six week old German sheperd and I am conflicted whether he should sleep inside or outside. I would let him sleep inside but I fear him going potty in the house. Please help me potty train him so I can let him sleep inside thanks and please respond
@oscart0918 Try crate training. If the space is properly sized, he won't eliminate in his crate. Take him out and praise him when he potties outside. I tell my 8 month old lab "go potty" when we go outside and praise him for it. When he's inside and not crated, don't let him out of your sight. You don't want to give him the opportunity to potty inside. Block off a room with a child-gate, or get a play pen. Gradually allow him access to more rooms as time progresses without accident.

Does anyone have a list of dogs who are good with people who have allergies?!? Message me saying any kind of breed you know who is good with allergies!!
We recently got a new puppy to our lovely family and I've been watching your videos and it's going really great. He already knows alot of the tricks you teach us to do. If you visit my channel, you'll see our new little puppy. He is a mixrase (Doberman, rottweiler and alaskan husky)
Thanks for posting these lovely tutorials, subscribed!
You've been a great influence to me and my friends, I would definetely reccomend this guy.
Love your videos! She is a beautiful dog. I've recommended your videos on my positive reinforcement blog. I'd be honored if you'd check it out. Thanks tab289 thepositivedogblog.blogspot.com/
This one time I saw my puppy kick with her hind feet out of no where...I've seen other dogs do it too, and I was wondering if you could do a video on that? (:
It kind of reminds me of a bull, but lyk I said with her hind feet(:
hi! i love your videos so far they are really helpful! but my dog does pretty much everything correct sit, stay, etc he doesn't jump doesn't steal food, doesn't beg, doesn't pull, doesn't bark at people but when i take him outside and take the leash off of him he runs as far away from me as possible when he sees there are no boundaries (i have no fenced in yard) and i would love if he would just not run away from me can you help me or at least refer me to which one of your vids could help?
thanks! should this also be used for when i get home? my great dane is very excited to see me when i get home, and i, likewise, am very excited to see him. should i wait until he calms down before greeting and allowing him to leave his pen?
Hey. I want to ask a question if you can answer. My dog is a collie hound mix and he is greedy over food. When people walk near his food bowl the first thing he does is protect it. How do you tell a dog to stop being greedy over food? Oh and sometime he growl at people when I get near his food.
I like this one and it is so simple: reward the desired behavior and make it easy for the dog to succeed! I learned to NOT allow visitors to pay attention to the dog! Tell them in no uncertain terms that it is NOT OK to make excuses or ignore what you are asking them to do. If they can't accept it or won't, end the visit and don't apologize that you are trying to help your dog. It's not about the visitor, it's about your dog that you love and want to learn to 'chill'.
so at what age do u recomend starting to teach a puppy basic commands like 1 month old 2 months old... i know it depends but i just want to know the average, btw ur videos are going to be very helpful
thank you for your help in training my dog, he is 1 yr old, but he hates bath, how can I encourage him to have one,, with our restraining he with leashes, he is GS colly mix, but, I run with couple scratches, while shower him, he hate the bath tub, I tried in the patio, but nothing work, can you give me some clues. By the way, your nw hair style is great
@MsZoraZ ....look in CraigsList for your town and at the bulletin board at the local PetSmart or in the 'Trading Post' local newspaper rag sheet usually found in 7-11 stores and cheap.
your videos extremely informative! i just got a GSD puppy and he is about 8 weeks old but when i try to get his attention with treats sometimes he'll come close as if he's paying attention and turn around and walk off is this because he doesn't enjoy the treats or he's just bored? Also is it ok to change up what type/ flavor of treats or will it just confuse him? Thanks
I like this way of training calmness, but at least for my dogs the clicker triggers an excitement, (yay! a reward is coming!) so the calmness disappears just as that. I'd suggest that you'd use "yes" or some other praising word and a treat if you have a dog that gets excited from the click. It worked for us, as long as I didn't get too worked up myself! :)
I definitely LOVEE how Solea licks her lips everytime she hears the clicker, its so adorable <3Great vids,Amazing dog keep doing vids! We love them :D
hey man in am 13 years old my german shaperd barks at me all the time my dad brout him when he was small he was 1month old i was scared of him now my dad toke him to the police 2 times to trian and now hes vesios
Thankyouu ^! Just wondering, if you can, how can i train my dog not to dribble water everywhere as soon as he's been drinking from the water bowl? He drinks it... then comes away from the bowl and dribble's water everywhere!! I have to mop it up every time he has a drink.. Please help!?
my dog is a champion barker. i have tried to "ignore technique" however, she can continue to bark and whine nonstop for a very long time. the last time this happened she barked for over an hour and didn't stop until the person left.
Great videos I subscribed! : ) can you PLEASE make a VIDEO of how you got your dog to catch frisbee...? I just got a beautiful German Shepherd pup would like to show him this in the future!!!
This is a really great tutorial that I will refer friends to... it can be super helpful for dogs with seperation anxiety too! : ) I just wish you had a billion dollar franchise instead of that dickmouth Cesar Millan. Note that his "calm down" video has a million views, and all he does is shut that dog down. *le sigh* AMAZING job tab, you are a boss.
@cdbvidsproductions Avoid paying any attention to the behavior. No looking, talking to, or petting. When she stops (eventually she will) - be prepared to reward her for keeping her paws on the ground. Work up the reward criteria so that she is required to keep all paws on the ground for longer before she gets a reward.
@tab289 okay thank you! great videos btw! your training tips have done wonders with my obnoxious, 100lb, boxer English mastiff! haha she was very hard to handle for a good year of her life until i started watching your videos! so thanks again! :)
@tab289 Hi there, your videos are amazing. I was thinking of getting a puppy, and watching your videos gives me an idea of how much effort and time needs to be put, which i am willing to do. Just wondering, when you buy a puppy and the few nights it whines and cries, is there anyway of calming the puppy down? I know this is expected of a puppy because their like babies but it would help a lot. thank you :)
@tab289 when you are clicking for calmness, are you also ignoring the dog with the guest and glancing over, or standing there with the dog while the guest is in the other room? I assume the guest isn't giving any form of attention (looking, etc).
Very Happy to see a new video from you. Thank you. I do not have many (really about no) guests. I keep my dog in a big play pen during the day while I am at work, so I want to let her out asap when I get home so she can go potty. But she does get excited about seeing me, so my dilemma is how to have a calm dog and at the same time getting her out so she can go potty. She is very good and does not mess at all during the day.
I love this, but what do you do when the dogs is running lose and someone comes over and the dog is afraid and you can't get them in the pen.(fearful dog)
@murwill1 That's why it's a good idea to set up "simulations" and practice with a friend (guest). It is important to have the dog in the pen though. Spending some time getting the dog comfortable going into the pen without any distractions will also be useful.
@ItsMrp000p Yes, you can use any sound or word that you like. Most of the time, I just say "yes". It works equally as well...but there are some advantages to using the clicker. (see description box)
Great videos!! When ppl come over I usually tell my dog (adult male gsd) to sit/stay and he will do that, but some ppl just go and greet the dog all excited and of course he jumps on them.. at least next time they come they sure do what I tell them...
Do u think this will work with cats? I have a cat and he always wants to hunt her or any cat he sees during walks..
Also, what tips would u give for switching him from conventional to clicker training? And what kind of bag do u use for the treats?
@vegandolly The only tip I would give regarding switching to clicker training is do it immediately! It's easier, more effective, and fun for the person and the dog! You will never want to go back :)
Thanks for uploading this new lesson! Alot of your tips and solutions are implemented in our household. But I have a few questions/problems; We live in a appartement and the dog can look down on other dogs (see.. status problem right there...) which causes him to bark to dogs (not all dogs...). I can click and reward if he stays calm, but some dogs just causes him to be unresponsive to anything... how would you calm the dog down..
And secondly in the same theme, on vacation we shared our ..
territory with two other dogs (same race) and every time the other two will go for a walk (and those two are exited to go... mine is more calm when I take him) he will immediately get exited and of course go into a frenzy (panic..) when they go and he can't go with them... there is no way he responds to a treat or a command... your thought on that will be a great help :)
@Mysc29a When all else fails, I just leash the dog. Simply leash them and have them settle down away from the trigger (window). When they are calm again you may release them, but if they start barking out the window again...be prepared with the leash. Its a little tiring but at the end of the day, we must outlast the dog with our patience. This is key and in my experience, it works.
Great video. Thanks for posting. My GSD is entirely too excited on greetings and being almost 90 lbs is a bit intimidating. I have to first start with her greeting me after work and then setting up more successful practice sessions with friends.
@tab289 Actually it worked great and I implemented it yesterday when I got home. I called my wife ahead of time and asked her to block off the landing for the front door and to hang my snack bag and clicker near the door. When I came home I ignored my dogs who were really excited but I slowly built them up to relaxing by clicking and rewarding progressively calmer behavior. After a few minutes, I opened up the gate and walked in to two at ease dogs. Thanks again!
Awwn how cute Solea is! Heplful, but as my dog LOVES to shake paws, any person she meets she will sit in front of them and offer her paw <3 I'll work on it with my new pup, Thanks for the vids continue doing them :)
what if you have 2 dogs, cause i have a stuben german sheperd puppy but he is still big, and a polish sheepdog and the shepered is almost never calm, he loved to run around, and he will chase the other dog alot, when the sheep dog dosnt want to run, he is more trained, would u suggest showing the sheep dog attention sents he is always calm, and the sheperd behinde the wall, until he learns to be quiet and he will be treated like the other dog? really cute dog btw :D
@potctk Sure you can do that and see how it goes. I personally prefer to work with one dog at a time, but it sounds like your other dog behaves just fine - so I don't think it will be a problem.
Oh thank you so much for uploading this! This is perfect because my German shepherd has trouble calming down. Oh, and by the way, Solea is a great catcher!
You are an incredible teacher and I love the ways that you teach. When I watch your videos I get one of the feelings where I feel like what you do is obvious but if you really think about it, its only obvious because you know exactly what your doing and make it look easy

Any ideas?
2nd question: Do you ever let your dog out of the pen int he presence of guests? if so when and how
thanks!!

@oscart0918 your dog should probably sleep inside its the safest! But anyways if u take him for a walk before he goes to sleep, there should be no problem during the night

Hello tab I bought a six week old German sheperd and I am conflicted whether he should sleep inside or outside. I would let him sleep inside but I fear him going potty in the house. Please help me potty train him so I can let him sleep inside thanks and please respond
oscart0918 4 months ago
@oscart0918 Try crate training. If the space is properly sized, he won't eliminate in his crate. Take him out and praise him when he potties outside. I tell my 8 month old lab "go potty" when we go outside and praise him for it. When he's inside and not crated, don't let him out of your sight. You don't want to give him the opportunity to potty inside. Block off a room with a child-gate, or get a play pen. Gradually allow him access to more rooms as time progresses without accident.

Hey. I want to ask a question if you can answer. My dog is a collie hound mix and he is greedy over food. When people walk near his food bowl the first thing he does is protect it. How do you tell a dog to stop being greedy over food? Oh and sometime he growl at people when I get near his food.

bendark00 6 months ago
I like this one and it is so simple: reward the desired behavior and make it easy for the dog to succeed! I learned to NOT allow visitors to pay attention to the dog! Tell them in no uncertain terms that it is NOT OK to make excuses or ignore what you are asking them to do. If they can't accept it or won't, end the visit and don't apologize that you are trying to help your dog. It's not about the visitor, it's about your dog that you love and want to learn to 'chill'.

your videos extremely informative! i just got a GSD puppy and he is about 8 weeks old but when i try to get his attention with treats sometimes he'll come close as if he's paying attention and turn around and walk off is this because he doesn't enjoy the treats or he's just bored? Also is it ok to change up what type/ flavor of treats or will it just confuse him? Thanks

I like this way of training calmness, but at least for my dogs the clicker triggers an excitement, (yay! a reward is coming!) so the calmness disappears just as that. I'd suggest that you'd use "yes" or some other praising word and a treat if you have a dog that gets excited from the click. It worked for us, as long as I didn't get too worked up myself! :)

you said to ignore her if she barks and wines but my dog doesnt just bark and wine, she tries jumping the gate! how can i ignore that? any tips?
cdbvidsproductions 7 months ago
@cdbvidsproductions Avoid paying any attention to the behavior. No looking, talking to, or petting. When she stops (eventually she will) - be prepared to reward her for keeping her paws on the ground. Work up the reward criteria so that she is required to keep all paws on the ground for longer before she gets a reward.

@tab289 Hi there, your videos are amazing. I was thinking of getting a puppy, and watching your videos gives me an idea of how much effort and time needs to be put, which i am willing to do. can you use a crate instead of a play pen? or maybe section off a room like the kitchen with a childs gate? (i have both these)
lamofbodom 7 months ago
@lamofbodom You definitely can. I just like playpens because they can fit in so many places and folded away hardly taking up any room.
tab289 7 months ago

I love this, but what do you do when the dogs is running lose and someone comes over and the dog is afraid and you can't get them in the pen.(fearful dog)
murwill1 7 months ago
@murwill1 That's why it's a good idea to set up "simulations" and practice with a friend (guest). It is important to have the dog in the pen though. Spending some time getting the dog comfortable going into the pen without any distractions will also be useful.

And what kind of bag do u use for the treats?
vegandolly 7 months ago

Mysc29a 7 months ago
@Mysc29a When all else fails, I just leash the dog. Simply leash them and have them settle down away from the trigger (window). When they are calm again you may release them, but if they start barking out the window again...be prepared with the leash. Its a little tiring but at the end of the day, we must outlast the dog with our patience. This is key and in my experience, it works.

@DensterNY Good plan! I might post a video about that soon... :)
tab289 7 months ago
@tab289 Actually it worked great and I implemented it yesterday when I got home. I called my wife ahead of time and asked her to block off the landing for the front door and to hang my snack bag and clicker near the door. When I came home I ignored my dogs who were really excited but I slowly built them up to relaxing by clicking and rewarding progressively calmer behavior. After a few minutes, I opened up the gate and walked in to two at ease dogs. Thanks again!

what if you have 2 dogs, cause i have a stuben german sheperd puppy but he is still big, and a polish sheepdog and the shepered is almost never calm, he loved to run around, and he will chase the other dog alot, when the sheep dog dosnt want to run, he is more trained, would u suggest showing the sheep dog attention sents he is always calm, and the sheperd behinde the wall, until he learns to be quiet and he will be treated like the other dog? really cute dog btw :D
