I worked here for awhile, every now and then somebody messes up- its life and it happens. She was fine- they both needed to either hold on or let go, end of story.
This is not really a "student", this is more of a "let your kid experience hang gliding" that this school offers, the pilot (child) was not making any effort to control the glider, and they should not be in a prone position at this point on a training hill, they should be flying upright from the downtubes(if they were actually learning). The "instructors" are suposed to hold the tethers for the entire "flight". Yes both of them made mistakes, ^#&* happens, everyone is ok
@phasetek Actually- the reason they teach people from the basetube on the first lesson is because we see so many students that we don't have time for ground running and they end up flying an hour after the lesson starts. Its a different style BECAUSE of the dunes we teach on and the wind.
@phasetek This was not "too windy" of a day- the person just should NOT have let the tether go- end of story. The one out of every 100 students we see who actually becomes a real student of hang gliding- we move to the uprights on their 2nd or 3rd lesson. When you have somebody on uprights on their first lesson (with no ground running), they often nose in and then break their arms or pull muscles. Teaching from the basetube allows them to swing cleanly through the control frame unharmed.
It was the right guy's fault for let the tether go. The guy on the left couldn't do nothing but keep holding the rope. If both guys let the ropes go, the accident could be worse.
Hang Gliding is not for the brain dead. It is not as easy as it looks. I would say the hardest part about hang gliding is LEARNING how to fly one. How to take off and land safely. There are methods that effectively work to teach people how to fly. This seems to work. I don't push hang gliding on people. I will tell them if they ask, only answer sincerely if they are. I'm sick of people saying: "Your crazy!" Thrust me, I don't have a deathwish. My quest is to enjoy my life the best way I can.
@glendeco I find its like riding a bike.... hard at first, but soon it becomes 2nd nature, not hard at all.
Watch someone in their 20s try to learn to ride a bike (those that learn as a kid forget how hard it is, and training wheels still work)...
Hang gliding is more than just control of the glider, its planning your flight path at least 30 seconds ahead of time, you have to do the same (to a lesser extent), on a bike. Speed and turning radius must be taken into account just to make a turn.
That's bad... Wouldn't suggest training at the beach in the first place, and having the line connected to the wing itself? Nah.. Learn to fly the correct way, find a proper school, or even a small hill. You can't really learn when someone is physically controlling your glider, you won't ever recieve the feel of the wing itself.
@clamb147 Training at the beach is fine, But I'm not a fan of the tethers. Too many times if the instructor would have let go of the tether rather than exerting force because the glider was rising too high, everything would be fine. Don't want them getting so high? start them lower on the sand dune, or dont train when the wind is strong enough that its soarable..
There's a place on the eastern US, where they insist on mucking with your keel right as you launch from the ramp......
@implorato .I DO. It's written on the glider.K.H.K...Kitty hawk kites on the dunes of N.C.I've never flown there but from what I know they are very reputable.Unfortanatly in this sport like any sport accidents do sometimes acure.I'm sure a lot of people blame the instructor and maybe they should but in all reality accidents happen no matter who you are or in what your doing.
Well I'm sorry but I don't agree. There are more video's that show structural instruction mistakes. -Serious- mistakes like using wrong ropes and bad helpers. This has nothing to do with the risks of hanggliding. In my opinion this school should stop right now. Students have to know there are safer methods. It's about being aware,
@shitNameAlert those instructors have soared the beach for 5 hours straight in one day, been 5000 ft above launch in the mountains and flown in close enough formation to touch each other's kingposts. Don't believe me? Watch any of my videos. The pilot was a kid taking their first hang gliding flight ever. I'm tired of you skygods with your T2s and Lightspeeds with the comp wires and expensive pod harnesses putting down other pilots and making hangliding an exclusive sport.
@n49945 To be honest, 5 hours straight at the beach is not impressive, nor is 5,000 over launch in the mountains, your average H4 will have done that too (well I don't go 5 hours straight at funston, I like to land, piss, drink, have a donut after 2-3 hours, then go back up, but its a comfort, not skill issue).
Nor is there anything wrong with T2s, and spending money on the sport. It doesn't make it exclusive. It doesn't exclude knee hangars and SS gliders at all.

The whole thing is completely stupid - yes the guy on the right made a huge mistake - however there was way too much wind in the first place!

Soarable conditions and a student pilot who requires instructors to stablize the kite with guidelines... Something is off here.

My understanding is that any accidents at this stage of learning are instructor error...let alone the fact that it's obvious from the video.

@LogicRising yeah except when the trainee also screws up, which, believe me, can happen.

Idiot dude on the right tether. And it looks like the student let herself be tossed around without once attempting any control.

She was going o.k. until the guy on her right hand rope pulled her over into the ground. (caused by L.H. guy letting go). Very random setup.
