R.E.M.'s version came out in 1987.

Great Big Sea's version came out in 1997.

Well as I said in the description this is an REM cover so REM originally did it.

I've heard a 3rd version of it which is like Folk styled by a band called "Great Big Sea" or something like that and a 4th version by a British band (I think) that I can't remember the name of.
