Varg was a smart guy. This movie really changed my perspective. Black metal is more of a "punk movement" I say that not because of the music, but the attitude. The catholic church really tries to take away culture and bring their own into various countries. It's been that way for centuries, it's almost as of they want power and control over everything. The inner circle knew this, only most people think its satin ism, not rebellion. Black metal rules \m/

Just because this film is classified as a "documentary" doesn't mean it's fully nor even partially true. I believe this interpretation is only slightly less full of hegemony than Kerrang!'s six page spread in the 90's. Although, this is only my perception so who knows?

That is the best he could come up with to represent the mighty Black Metal genre? He had balls of steel to do that in front of the camera but come on. There was no power behind his performance.

That sucks for the directors I guess. Thoroughly enjoyed this film so much I purchased the special edition DVD from Amazon. This was an excellent film & too long overdue.
Interestingly, the makers of this film are massively in debt. They spent two years in Norway and eight months alone just waiting for Varg to agree to be in it, if you read some interviews you'll see that they're totally fucked financially.. So if you like it buy it I guess :o.

Hardly Christ-like behavior.

After the fall of Rome converting to Christianity hardly generated any wealth for a while except in some parts of Eastern Europe still connected to the Byzantine Empire (until they started declining in the 13th century CE). The Dark Ages weren't exactly an economic boom time.

My favorite part of this movie is when he starts explaining how purposefully shitty they made the recordings. The music was so raw and awesome. Varg is a fucking genius of extraordinary magnitude.
I watched this recently, I think Vargs interviews were the best parts of this documentary, and there was a lot of footage I'd never seen before, but I thought it could've been a lot better..

Some of it was enforced by kings who converted to Christianity and forced the rest of the people to follow suit as a national religion. Some of the conversion occurred through Christians warriors slaughtering "Pagans" who wouldn't convert and destroying their sacred sites and forcing the survivors to convert at sword-point or else be killed. Hardly Christ-like behavior.

@grimiguana - Some polities became wealthier after conversion because it allowed them to form bonds with the Roman and/or Byzantine Empires which were wealthy. After the fall of Rome converting to Christianity hardly generated any wealth for a while except in some parts of Eastern Europe still connected to the Byzantine Empire (until they started declining in the 13th century CE). The Dark Ages weren't exactly an economic boom time.

Also anyone who tries to force christianity on someone else is completely shitting on their own belief and therefore also not really a christian. Scandinavia WILLINGLY adopted christianity and has had far more prosperity since then. America and the UK used to be largely christian but recently they have been becoming less christian and it shows.
