"citizen773": There's something I noticed about Sweden in Olympic hockey (I'm Canadian, by the way). The last five consecutive olympics (maybe more) Sweden has either lost in the quarter finals or won gold.
Greatest hockey game I've ever seen and greatest upset in Olympic hockey history (and I'm an American). Andrei Mezin played the game of his life. Became a legend in my mind. Feel horrible for Sammy Salo watching this again though.
@abatch12 No way. That was an upset, but not on this scale. Everyone forgets the USSR was struggling before facing the U.S., while the U.S. was on fire. Prior to the U.S. game, the Soviets were five minutes from losing to Finland before scoring three times in the last five minutes, and the USSR followed that up by trailing Canada 3-1 before earning a win. Meanwhile, the U.S. flattened Czechoslovakia, supposedly the No. 2 team in the world. Belarus over Sweden was the bigger upset.
You know, to all of you who are hard on Salo, it's just a freakin's game. Big deal. If I were Salo, I'd have told all Sweedish fans to bite me, he owes you NOTHING, no more than any other Swede does. I'm a Canadian, and same for our team. I'm fed up of hockey players putting on the jersey for their country, then getting torn apart if they make a mistake. If you think it's so easy, YOU get between the pipes and get rubber shot at you. Be cool, Salo.

This is the first time I've seen this in over 8 years - I was down for months after this happened. I was really expecting them to win this tournament. Remember, Team Sweden had a really strong team on paper and they beat team canada 5-2, the czechs 2-1 and germany 7-1 in the prelims. The star players were performing well up until this game too, with Sundin taking home the scoring title despite being eliminated this early and Lids had more points than any other defenseman as well.
@Besherk Jumping in front of a moving bus to save a child without any thought of your own survival - that's a miracle. Belarus beating Sweden is a hockey game, an unusual one, but still just a hockey game. And really, given that it's 60 minutes of hockey, and the amount of international talent in hockey these days, anything can happen in a single game - heck, apparently the U.S. can even beat Canada (assuming it's only a round-robin game of course).
@jazzguitar2010 well this (2002) isint "these days" in 2002 the match could and would easily end up 13-2 sweden....2002 and now is a lot different..it is and it will allways be a miracle...the miricale on ice got nothing on this
Somebody help me here... My mother mentioned something that this was the day when the whole world knew that salo was afraid of the puck... I don't quite believe it, but is it true?
this is why not just hockey but sport in general is great!!! in 2006 the swiss beat my Canadian team, maybe even more an upset than this! It hurt but it was still good for the game. But yesterday we got our pride back!!!!
@trueguinnessking Its only a upset because people in canada or most people in canada don't realize what the swiss are doing. They are going up the ranks to someday be potential be considered top hockey nations in the world, do you realize who are coaching these swiss? Canadians are and they are learning quick they know how to kill off penalties and use sticks to help them. Last time a canadian coach teach some bunch of russians to play and look what they did. WORLD DOMINATION...
greatest upset is still the 1980 miracle on ice usa team....... a bunch of amateur and college players vs veteran Russian team that played together a whole lot and won numerous gold,,,,, since then , usa haven't won gold in the olympics,,,,,, maybe on sunday against Luongo and co. but I highly doubt it...
@dsrevo79 I think they have a very good shot at it...Never been a big Luongo fan...and hes never really proven himself to be a clutch goaltender when it really counts...Tomorrow will all be about puck possession and Goaltending...i Canada controls puck possession I think they will win...but thats easier said than done against a very fast and gritty USA team.
@dsrevo79 The Soviets were very uninspired that year and the chemistry on the team was horrible. It's not exactly like they were all friends off ice. I don't consider it a miracle by any standards. On paper it is, however.
@robo1945 I know plenty, when I wrote that i was upset, slovakia is a great hockey nation. And you have some great players. But sweden is statistically better than slovakia in hockey. I though sweden would win, but sometimes the outcome is suprisingly different, take quartar finals against Belarus in 2002, we lost. Shit happens. :)
Ah, this game was the first thing I thought of today when I saw Latvia almost beat Czech Repbulic. I was so happen when Sweden lost, I don't like the Scandanavian teams AT ALL! Russia/Canada/Czech's are where it's at.
horrible horrible memories, pussy ass belarus, their defensive shit play ruined our momentum, against any other team we wouldve won. But of course we should've won this game.
let me remind you that sweden was playing defensively in that olympics. so you were beaten by ur own weapon, couldnt lead the game and play offense and lost
this win was a big thrill for me, as I live in Flint, Michigan, and Andrei Mezin was our goalie for a minor league championship in 1996 - the Flint Generals.

the biggest Mezin problem is that he is unstable and sometimes plays not so brilliant games against average teams. He needs to catch his moment, feel the competition. Koval is ok. He reminds Mezin he is not the only gk in the team
Salo the goalie got the blame, no one remembers that Salo got sweden the gold in 1994. But this is what people here remember him for. I was looking for clips from the games that sweden won in this tournament and then i stumbled upon this. Its still very very painful for me as a swede to watch it.
@silentghost23 It was unbeliveblae... We had a rost filled with NHL-Stars and we lose in this way against a team that will participate in the B-Hockey Championship 2 months later against teams like Romania, South Korea and Great Britain... We almost could hade taken out any players we wanted from our native leauge and still win... greatest fiasco in swedish hockey ever!
I can always say that thanks to Sweden's big slipup, Canada got the gold in hockey, I always wanted to write to the Belarussian embassy in Ottawa to thank the country for helping us get gold!
i don't think its lucky we because balarus knows how to score just look at it the shots are 44-18 and balarus scored 3 goals in 18 shots i don't think you can have 3 lucky goals in a game. And the balarus goalie made a lot of saves 44 saves 3 let in that makes it 93.18 save percentage if i got the math right. I think nowadays balarus needs better goaltending
why the heck can i find this one but i cant find the 2nd most exciting game ANYWHERE on the web. that is Canada vs Finland where Steve Y scores. if ANYONE knows i would be grateful
столько эмоций я не испытывала уже давно. этого куража, радости и дружного орания "Беларусь!" в нашем доме не было до этого никогда, да и после этой олимпиады поводов наши спортсмены, к сожалению, не давали.

lucky belarus! go sweden! but canada will be hard to beat on their ice!
patrickn16 2 years ago 3
i don't think its lucky we because balarus knows how to score just look at it the shots are 44-18 and balarus scored 3 goals in 18 shots i don't think you can have 3 lucky goals in a game. And the balarus goalie made a lot of saves 44 saves 3 let in that makes it 93.18 save percentage if i got the math right. I think nowadays balarus needs better goaltending

yes we will be hard to beat, russia dont stand a chance, and yea belarus should be proud, i also like swedes to, theyre almost like canadians

столько эмоций я не испытывала уже давно. этого куража, радости и дружного орания "Беларусь!" в нашем доме не было до этого никогда, да и после этой олимпиады поводов наши спортсмены, к сожалению, не давали.

since im from sweden i know how mocked salo got, and even his kids got humiliated in school... kinda sad for such a good goalie
Sanningen92 2 years ago 7
salo was average at best. never did anything of note in the nhl.
lundqvist showed the difference a good goalie makes in 2006.
i would laugh if belarus beat you again in 2010. they're bringing back the same goalie, who btw almost scored on you at the end of this game.
