I always thought Jessup sympathized with Danny's predicament to a point, having to go down there and investigate when Danny wasn't a marine nor had seen combat. It's only when what's-her-name starts asking hard questions does the Col become agitated.

@XxowendanxX See your sup. he has paperwork for you
hahahahaha jk but could you imagine if I was really him? "Respect the rank, not the person" is the dumbest thing I've heard about rank thus far in the military. Guess who said it. A Captain!
@rmedina101 LOL...I haven't been in the navy for over 17 years...but yeah no one can tell who I really am with this pro, anyway...I believe you have to respect the rank, not the person just like you respect the office, not the person so if you can't stand O'bummer you have to at least respect the office haha...our captain was "Mr. Professional"...everything by the book...he didn't realize that on a submarine we family and so we gotta keep it real...
You know there is clearly class division in the military too. I agree with Col.Jessup though calling him a " snotty little bastard".Jessup is a hardcore military man who's for sure fought in real combat, while Danny and his ilk are arrogant self-centered rich spoil brats who went to good schools to study law. Daniel Caffey was definitely rude to him asking for the "transfer orders" in the way he did. Let's face we've all been treated like that by someone in a better social position than us.
Another similarity in his lines between those 2 movies: In The Shining he says to Wendy "You think MAYBE he should be taken to a doctor. When do you think MAYBE he should be taken to a doctor"?! With the same word stress in AFGM he says to his senior officers Maybe We as officers have a duty to train Santiago. Maybe WE as officers have a responsibilty to this country to make sure the men and women charged with it's security are highly trained professionals. Yes I'm sure I read that somewhere."
"I'm here to help you in any way I can. You believe me don't you Danny that I'm here to help you"? Similar line to what Jack's character in The Shining says to his son Danny:
"I would never hurt you Danny. You believe me don't you Danny that I would never hurt you"?
"If you havnt gotten a blowjob from a superiour officer... well, you are just letting the best in life pass you by." One of the best lines from THE BEST actor. I f-ing luv it.
@LuluHeeNim She has been one of the best looking girls in american movieland, =) stupid Hollywood. Her part is that of an attorney for the defense of two poor young subalterns, used as scapegoats by this hot air balloon, Jessup. WHY is she a "bitch"??!!! For asking him questions she's supposed to ask, it's HER JOB to ask of this multi-decorated buffoon who only wants to keep his cushy job with a lunch table on a terrace and a black, white jacketed and -gloved servant who has to call him "sir"??!
@LuluHeeNim ADD THIS ON: Once back to Washington, she ought to have reported him for foul language and insults in the presence of 5 more officers: "faggoty uniforms"... "fucking" ... suggestions of "blow jobs". She'd have had at least TWO witnesses (Caffey and Weimberg) - Markinson the ivertebrate, Kendrick the weasel and the "Yes Sir" black servant wouldn't have dared to testify against that SUPREME, CRIMINAL JERK.
U know what I say guys, as I see over on Demi's bright sexy eyes and young face here, I begin to want eat her pussy till she begin scream on orgasm and after that lick out her whole butt!
"You see Danny I can deal with the bullets the bombs and the blood.. I dont want money and I dont want medals.. What I do want is for you to stand there in that f*ggoty white uniform and with your Harvard mouth extend me some fuckin courtesy!" Great movie, Jack played a great asshole in this movie..
"What I do want is for you to stand there in the faggety white uniform, and with your Harvard mouth, extend me some fucking courtesy. You have to ask my nicely."
@Aphorism23 Are those that ape's REAL reasons for resentment: the more elegant Navy uniforms, and the awareness of an education in his opponent that he, West Point and/or US Naval Academy or not, can only dream about. Is THAT the kind of rivalry within the USA armed forces??!!! "Good grief",Charlie Brown would say. Furthermopre, Caffey had been very lenient towards him - why insult directly him ("faggoty uniform") and insinuate "blow jobs" from his superior, female uniform?
@cne08 lol I love how Tom Cruise plays these arrogant smart ass characters. In this movie he was really getting under Jack Nicholson's skin. Great acting by both, but also Demi Moore was pretty good.
@cuthere4 I couldn't really tell, the definition is nopt good enuff... the white-jacketed-and-gloved (but black) waiter going around the table with the coffee, ready to pour more? one of those 4,000 Cubans with AK-47's? In the latter case, why not take aim, pull the trigger and SHOOT the g.d. murdering colonel D-E-A-D?
@Gheorgyi i could care less if u or anyone else cares about my personal connection to the military i didnt say anything about ur lengthy string talks so either way i dont give a damn wat u care about i ever right to speak my mind. if cant say something nice kindly shut ur damn trap
@Supershadowman64 Really, buster, I didn't "say" anything, nor did I "open my trap" - I only WROTE something, Why, should I get an authorization from the Pentagon to do so??!!! I don't give a damn about the Pentagon, about the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the whole rest of the american high brass. I'm NOT an american citizen, for my luck.
Fantastic movie. The story slowly unravels more and more until the end, and when Jessep takes the stand at the end, it becomes so heavily intense, it's just grand.
@Gheorgyi I would think so. That’s why we post these comments. To be read. Just saying (and this is not an attack) if you truly didn’t care, why take the time to respond? I mean, you and I are going back and forth about our interpretation of the film. Not everyone cares to read our opinions, right?
@Sinistrsexybeast Right, but the fact is one reads so many idiocies in these YT comments, so much resorting to reciprocal insults, cussing, vulgarities and 4-letter words, that one feels titillated to intervene. Without using the last.
1:13 Get a load of the look of pain on the Lt Col's (Markinson) face, and contempt for this jackass' attempts to wiggle out of charges. Maybe he's already meditating suicide?
@Gheorgyi Suicide? I don’t think so. At least not at time. I think it has to do more with shame and embarrassment that Jessep is lying, and that he feels as much at fault for Santiago’s death as Col. Jessep should feel.
@Sinistrsexybeast Oh, I agree. Not at this time, but he progressed towards it. Still, what he eventually came to is called exactly suicide. And at the time of the hearing, it had happened.
@Gheorgyi Oh, I know. I just thought what was under discussion was what was going inside his head right then at the table. But I realize what happens later. He didn’t exactly leave much to the imagination did he? :) “You got to hand it to those marshals. He didn’t hang himself by his laces, or slash himself with a butterknife. He got into full dress uniform, drew a nickel-plated pistol, and fired a bullet into his mouth.”
IV – But Kaffee is doing his job, Jessup is hiding his guilt and cowardly trying to unload the crime on somebody else. Sympathies should go to Kaffee, who does his job well and nails the s.o.b. The film also gives evidence about the antagonism, acrimony and intolerance (“faggoty uniform”, “flash your badge”, “blow job”…) of the USMC towards the US Navy, of which (ha Ha HA!!!) they are however a part.
III – as the military (Navy) defense lawyer for the two defendants, a young upstart (maybe) in the practice of law, who eventually (and cleverly) sees through the pantomime put up by the pompous ass and makes him admitting shouting he ORDERED that murder. Nicholson is SUPERB in his part, much better than Cruise as the young upstart lawyer who, however, has the better on him. If we talk about the actors, Nicholson is better and more powerful; but Cruise is good, too. ./.
II – But in this role, a lying conniving bastard murderer, who has ordered the killing of one of his soldiers in the name of some “code”, has caused the death by suicide for shame of another officer and forced two other young men to go for him under a trial for - may be - a death penalty. He struts around arrogantly like a peacock, insulting other officers. On the other hand, a much younger actor without as many credits, Tom Cruise, as Lt Kaffee, a young Harvard Law School graduate ./.
I – How about separating the actors, and keep them separated, from the roles they play, and stop the bickering? On one hand we have, here, Nicholson as Col. Nathan Jessup, commander of the USMC garrison in Guantanamo, in the hostile, communist Cuba: a strutting, arrogant, conceited peacock of a field officer who’s concerned only about keeping his position of COMMAND in his façade as a high-ranking officer. A superb actor, with many credits as such in many parts of different type.
3:10: !... " you haven't got a blowjob from your superior officer". Lt Cdr JoAnne Galloway (Demi), slap him across his dentures: to a lawyer, a navy officer (Lt Cdr, = "major"), a woman. Boorish self-exhalted ape. Then he gets to insult the uniform of the Navy ("faggoty uniform"). And all the time, he's lying and hiding he's ordered a man's MURDER... See you in court and under oath, buster...
@Jurassic0Al That Commander would be a 2- or 3-star admiral (star officer), and this hot air balloon (a colonel: field officer) better keep his trap SHUT, click his heels together, snap to attention, give the military salute and execute the orders of the admiral , who also outranks him in the Navy (if you don't know it, the USMC is formally part of the Navy...). Maybe the admiral's navy-blue pants are fancier than his khaki's, and that's the marines' real beef against the navy.
@Gheorgyi- Oh, God, not you again, Georgie. I ain't about to go on arguing with you again. And what would you know about the Navy, or the Marines? Aren't you from Italy or something?
@Jurassic0Al Yes, it's me, and I am, so what??!!! Don't I have access to info, too, like you - even through the Net as everybody else? When did we cross e-swords before, "Jurassic", amd what about? Rest assured, I have no intention of going into another diatribe. Just one question though, please: can you say something I wrote is untrue, or inexact? Thanks man. Peace, ho!!!
@Gheorgyi- No way is that number of ? and ! marks necessary. You might have access to information on the internet, but that doesn't mean you know anything at all about relations between the US Marines and Navy.
@Jurassic0Al It should be intuitive that "that number of "?" (and of "!",at that) is a substitute for giving the expression , withy the tone and inflections of voice (besides of facial expression). one can give when speaking. Be that as it may, as I really don't give a hoot about either USMC and/or USA Navy, I only repeat the question: is anything of what I wrote wrong, or inexact? If the answer is "yes", specify what; if it is not, stop quibbling.
@Gheorgyi- Dear God, a more convoluted and unreadable paragraph I have never seen anywhere. Online or offline. I honestly don't know what the fuck you're talking about Georgie, and more importantly I don't care. Or to use your word, I don't give a "hoot". I'm gonna "quibble" all fucking day long if I want. I'm done talking to you.
@Jurassic0Al If you are short of understanding powers, I can't help it. Go be seen by a neurologist or a psychiatrist, you show all signs of needing it. And between one "quibble" and the next one, keep up the "f**k**g" activities and prose. BTW, you keep avoiding answering that very simple and straightfoward question of mine (about the relationship betweeen the US Navy and the USMC): is anything of what I wrote wrong or inexact? s you see, I'm keeping it simple, even you can understand it.
@Jurassic0Al And WHAT could that be, "Hearts United for Animals"? Or, are you imitating Lt. Col. Frank Slade in "Scent of a Woman"? But no, that was "WHO-AH!!!". Never mind, I'm joking now.,
@Gheorgyi- Well, I assumed you knew, Italian guy who knows more about the American Navy than I do even though you've already said you don't care. The word LTC Slade was saying is "Hooah". It's an Army term. Look it the fuck up. And HUA is Heard Understood Acknowledged. Once again, I'm simply shocked you didn't know that already. Go lecture a Frenchmen about his Navy or something. Tell the captain of the Charles de Gaulle all about his own damn ship. I got better shit to do.
@Jurassic0Al Well, I'll be... Look man, one can expect somebody to know a foreign language, but not its acronyms... " HUA" = " Heard Understood Acknowledged"? Well, nice to know, I'll keep it in mind. About that French captain, do you really think I'm disposed to waste my time on a frog? OK OK, go do your s**t and learn something... how to use the bidet. Cheers, no hard feelings.
black america and barack obama to white america: "sure i'll give you a tax break, help with your home foreclosure, a good job, free health care, safe streets, no terror attacks and an overall better life, but, you have to ask us nicely"
I had only seen this on TV with the edits of the language. I'm going to have to get the video. It's so much better uncensored.,,and I liked in the uncensored version before I saw this. Thanks.
@Gheorgyi- Yeah, a hot-air balloon with a Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit- shall I go on? Colonel Jessep doesn't just talk a lot of BS he can't back up. Marines like him seldom do.
Navy really does have faggoty white uniforms don't they? What the grunt Col really wanted to say: "you come down here dressed like a fag with this big nosed kike and this dumb cunt as a boss and you want to talk shit?! Ask nicely you piece of dung!"
In my opinion, Cruise, Moore, and Jessup are three prideful characters who clash and create excellent drama. Each person has their own motives in what they do, and they all believe they are doing the right or practical thing.
I love how much discussion this movie generates, too.
I think it's funny that they make Nicholson seem like a douche for demanding courtesy from a lower ranking individual. That's just normal to me. I'm in the AF, and if I were to just talk to a Colonel that way, I'd get my ass handed to me. Customs and coursties. You learn it day on in basic. "Yes sir", "no sir". Simple.
@Jurassic0Al The funny thing is, it would have played out just like that too. The superior would have just let it keep going, allowing that flame to be fueled more and more. I've seen it done time and time again. Usually the superior is waiting for you to realize what you've done, and correct it, but they won't say anything the entire time (unless it's blatant disrespect, or something).
All in all, I still find Cruise's single ribbon adorable.
@Atlink- Most certainly. Colonel Jessep laid down the law on that soon enough. Evidently some Navy types at the table had forgotten a man with colonel's wings was present. And yes! That service ribbon is so cute. Jessep has many of those. And a Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star... between that and his rank he's definitely earned the courtesy he wants from subordinates.
@Jurassic0Al I would’ve just said, “I don’t have to ask you nicely, and I don’t need to ask you at all. ‘What I want is for you,’ to give me that transfer order and if you don’t comply, I just have report that you’re not cooperative with the investigation... Sir.” Fuck him and his ribbons. Look at the pretty colors. But I understand that if you’re far away from home and even if your jurisdiction applies there, you’re on this scary guy’s turf and that alone is intimidating.
@Sinistrsexybeast- Well, that's you. Where I come from a man who has received the Navy Cross- even if that's *all* he's received- is to be treated with all due respect, investigation or no. If you can't understand or respect the decorations that a combat veteran like Jessep has received, that's just fine. Even if Jessep broke some rules and got one of his men killed and two sacked, he still served the United States with distinction.
@Jurassic0Al If he betrayed one solder, or one citizen of the United States, then he failed it as a whole. That’s what Dawson realized at the end of the film when he was discharged. He was supposed to fight for who couldn’t fight for themselves. Whatever Jessep did to earn a decoration pinned to his shirt that seemed to add inches to his “ego” was washed away when he let his power got the better of him; when he let down Santiago.
@Jurassic0Al All he thinks about is “me, me, me.” But later when he tells the judge, “I don’t know what kind of a unit you’re running here,” we see that that he isn’t so considerate when it comes to extending courtesy to others who served.
@Sinistrsexybeast- That's true enough, and that attitude comes back to haunt him. What makes Jessep, for me at least, so difficult to pass judgement on is that his good attributes and distinguished service record are so damn good, and his bad attributes are so damn bad.
And regarding the judge, that was a big mistake on Jessep's part. The two are of equal rank, and Jessep is more highly decorated, but the judge is a Vietnam vet too, and more importantly, he's the *judge*. Respect the man.
@Jurassic0Al "... Even if Jessep broke some rules and got one of his men killed and two sacked... " "EVEN IF"??!!! That's just a trifle, isn't it??!!! He's a CRIMINAL, even if bemedalled - AND a COWARD who wants to unload his responsibility on two of "his" boys... Award him the Congressional Yellow Liver Gong, THAT'S WHAT!!!
@Sinistrsexybeast Haha, you just can't do that to a decorated officer like Jessup. You just can't. I dunno if you've been in the military but when a highly decorated Col. tells you that you have a faggy white uniform on and to ask him nicely, you ask him nicely or you end up in Alaska.

@LuluHeeNim She has been one of the best looking girls in american movieland, =) stupid Hollywood. Her part is that of an attorney for the defense of two poor young subalterns, used as scapegoats by this hot air balloon, Jessup. WHY is she a "bitch"??!!! For asking him questions she's supposed to ask, it's HER JOB to ask of this multi-decorated buffoon who only wants to keep his cushy job with a lunch table on a terrace and a black, white jacketed and -gloved servant who has to call him "sir"??!
Gheorgyi 7 months ago
@LuluHeeNim ADD THIS ON: Once back to Washington, she ought to have reported him for foul language and insults in the presence of 5 more officers: "faggoty uniforms"... "fucking" ... suggestions of "blow jobs". She'd have had at least TWO witnesses (Caffey and Weimberg) - Markinson the ivertebrate, Kendrick the weasel and the "Yes Sir" black servant wouldn't have dared to testify against that SUPREME, CRIMINAL JERK.

Gheorgyi 9 months ago
@Gheorgyi Suicide? I don’t think so. At least not at time. I think it has to do more with shame and embarrassment that Jessep is lying, and that he feels as much at fault for Santiago’s death as Col. Jessep should feel.
Sinistrsexybeast 9 months ago
@Sinistrsexybeast Oh, I agree. Not at this time, but he progressed towards it. Still, what he eventually came to is called exactly suicide. And at the time of the hearing, it had happened.

Gheorgyi 9 months ago
III – as the military (Navy) defense lawyer for the two defendants, a young upstart (maybe) in the practice of law, who eventually (and cleverly) sees through the pantomime put up by the pompous ass and makes him admitting shouting he ORDERED that murder. Nicholson is SUPERB in his part, much better than Cruise as the young upstart lawyer who, however, has the better on him. If we talk about the actors, Nicholson is better and more powerful; but Cruise is good, too. ./.
Gheorgyi 9 months ago
II – But in this role, a lying conniving bastard murderer, who has ordered the killing of one of his soldiers in the name of some “code”, has caused the death by suicide for shame of another officer and forced two other young men to go for him under a trial for - may be - a death penalty. He struts around arrogantly like a peacock, insulting other officers. On the other hand, a much younger actor without as many credits, Tom Cruise, as Lt Kaffee, a young Harvard Law School graduate ./.
Gheorgyi 9 months ago

Gheorgyi 9 months ago
Ah, screw the Commander-In-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet. He's Colonel Jessep, some fancypants Admiral ain't gonna tell him what to do.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al That Commander would be a 2- or 3-star admiral (star officer), and this hot air balloon (a colonel: field officer) better keep his trap SHUT, click his heels together, snap to attention, give the military salute and execute the orders of the admiral , who also outranks him in the Navy (if you don't know it, the USMC is formally part of the Navy...). Maybe the admiral's navy-blue pants are fancier than his khaki's, and that's the marines' real beef against the navy.
Gheorgyi 9 months ago
@Gheorgyi- Oh, God, not you again, Georgie. I ain't about to go on arguing with you again. And what would you know about the Navy, or the Marines? Aren't you from Italy or something?

Rest assured, I have no intention of going into another diatribe. Just one question though, please: can you say something I wrote is untrue, or inexact? Thanks man. Peace, ho!!!
Gheorgyi 9 months ago
@Gheorgyi- No way is that number of ? and ! marks necessary. You might have access to information on the internet, but that doesn't mean you know anything at all about relations between the US Marines and Navy.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al It should be intuitive that "that number of "?" (and of "!",at that) is a substitute for giving the expression , withy the tone and inflections of voice (besides of facial expression). one can give when speaking. Be that as it may, as I really don't give a hoot about either USMC and/or USA Navy, I only repeat the question: is anything of what I wrote wrong, or inexact? If the answer is "yes", specify what; if it is not, stop quibbling.
Gheorgyi 9 months ago
@Gheorgyi- Dear God, a more convoluted and unreadable paragraph I have never seen anywhere. Online or offline. I honestly don't know what the fuck you're talking about Georgie, and more importantly I don't care. Or to use your word, I don't give a "hoot". I'm gonna "quibble" all fucking day long if I want. BTW, you keep avoiding answering that very simple and straightfoward question of mine (about the relationship betweeen the US Navy and the USMC): is anything of what I wrote wrong or inexact? s you see, I'm keeping it simple, even you can understand it.

@Gheorgyi- Well, I assumed you knew, Italian guy who knows more about the American Navy than I do even though you've already said you don't care. The word LTC Slade was saying is "Hooah". Simple.
Atlink 1 year ago 2
@Atlink- That's absolutely correct.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al The funny thing is, it would have played out just like that too. The superior would have just let it keep going, allowing that flame to be fueled more and more. I've seen it done time and time again. Usually the superior is waiting for you to realize what you've done, and correct it, but they won't say anything the entire time (unless it's blatant disrespect, or something).
All in all, I still find Cruise's single ribbon adorable.
Atlink 9 months ago
@Atlink- Most certainly. Colonel Jessep laid down the law on that soon enough. Evidently some Navy types at the table had forgotten a man with colonel's wings was present. And yes! That service ribbon is so cute. Jessep has many of those. And a Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star... between that and his rank he's definitely earned the courtesy he wants from subordinates.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al I would’ve just said, “I don’t have to ask you nicely, and I don’t need to ask you at all. ‘What I want is for you,’ to give me that transfer order and if you don’t comply, I just have report that you’re not cooperative with the investigation... Sir.” Fuck him and his ribbons. Look at the pretty colors. But I understand that if you’re far away from home and even if your jurisdiction applies there, you’re on this scary guy’s turf and that alone is intimidating.
Sinistrsexybeast 9 months ago 2
@Sinistrsexybeast- Well, that's you. Where I come from a man who has received the Navy Cross- even if that's *all* he's received- is to be treated with all due respect, investigation or no. If you can't understand or respect the decorations that a combat veteran like Jessep has received, that's just fine. Even if Jessep broke some rules and got one of his men killed and two sacked, he still served the United States with distinction.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al If he betrayed one solder, or one citizen of the United States, then he failed it as a whole. That’s what Dawson realized at the end of the film when he was discharged. He was supposed to fight for who couldn’t fight for themselves. Whatever Jessep did to earn a decoration pinned to his shirt that seemed to add inches to his “ego” was washed away when he let his power got the better of him; when he let down Santiago.
Sinistrsexybeast 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al All he thinks about is “me, me, me.” But later when he tells the judge, “I don’t know what kind of a unit you’re running here,” we see that that he isn’t so considerate when it comes to extending courtesy to others who served.
Sinistrsexybeast 9 months ago
@Sinistrsexybeast- That's true enough, and that attitude comes back to haunt him. What makes Jessep, for me at least, so difficult to pass judgement on is that his good attributes and distinguished service record are so damn good, and his bad attributes are so damn bad.
And regarding the judge, that was a big mistake on Jessep's part. The two are of equal rank, and Jessep is more highly decorated, but the judge is a Vietnam vet too, and more importantly, he's the *judge*. Respect the man.
Jurassic0Al 9 months ago
@Jurassic0Al "... Even if Jessep broke some rules and got one of his men killed and two sacked... " "EVEN IF"??!!! That's just a trifle, isn't it??!!! He's a CRIMINAL, even if bemedalled - AND a COWARD who wants to unload his responsibility on two of "his" boys... Award him the Congressional Yellow Liver Gong, THAT'S WHAT!!!
Gheorgyi 7 months ago
@Sinistrsexybeast Haha, you just can't do that to a decorated officer like Jessup. You just can't. I dunno if you've been in the military but when a highly decorated Col. tells you that you have a faggy white uniform on and to ask him nicely, you ask him nicely or you end up in Alaska.
