Of course english is universal, because it's so advertised everywhere. However, it takes years to speak proper english for someone who's not a native speaker. For some people takes decades to be somehow fluent, while Esperanto took me around 3 months to learn and speak fluently. Saluton!

Esperanto will fail, because it excludes the germanic sounds including english and german, which are the most used world wide...Esperanto is easy for spaniards, italian, french and portugues speakers but really hard to the rest of the world....If you want to create a new artificial languale it has to be derived from english, not from latin....

@abrahampetit well considering the fact that english is largely latin based today, you're not changing much. And considering also that nearly 1 billion people in the world speak a romance language as a first language, it only seems logical to make the greater majority of the vocabulary latin based. Most people around the world are also very familiar with latin vocabulary since there are nearly a billion more people in the world who can speak either english or a romance language as a 2nd language

@haltensie Dude, english is NOT a romance language. English comes from german mostly, the only latin influence it's some french, but very little. Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, French... these are romance languages.

English is indeed a Germanic language, but to say it was only influenced by French a little is inaccurate. In fact a large portion of the English vocabulary is etymologically French, including the words "etymology", "large", "portion" and "language". English also has a LOT of words from Latin. Actually, English is probably the closest a non-Romance language can come to being a Romance language.

@abrahampetit I disagree with your claim that Esperanto will fail because it is not based on a Germanic language. English is my first language and Spanish was EASY for me to learn. It's way more consistent than English. So, if Esperanto is easy for Spanish speakers... Well... you do the math to know what I'm saying.
