try using a circle hook on your rig. you don't have to set the hook, just reel down and the hook 90% of the time is in the side of the jaw. i went to this type of hook 3 years ago and have not yet had a deep hooked fish. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Why do people jerk their pole sooo hard and reeling in so fast? I have fishing for the last 20 yrs and I don't set my hook that hard or reeling in that fast. I've seen where people set their hook so hard and reeling it in so close to their faces or body. All that is unnecessary. Relax and keep your pole midway down and reel it in peacefully.

If you're going to bottom fish and leave your rod somewhat unattended, use a circle hook. The hook sets itself when the fish turns with the bait and you won't gut hook the thing.

well lipping them is fine but you actually arent supposed to lift them horizontally by their jaw. it puts a lot of stress on the jaw and while it probably wont break it (unless its a very big fish), it could definitely do some damage. you should just lip them and let them hang vertically.

I just bought a live bait minnow trap as like fishing for peacock bass (Florida) and as a whole pretty bad at it lol I just started . From what I understand you hook the minnow attach to a floaters roughly with 1 foot of line? I havent used to minnow trap yet but plan to this week . As not a single place carries live bait around here only earthworms

Not really i do both and catch fish either way. Sometimes if I am using a lure and lures just aint working i'll throw out a nightctrawler or minnow and sit there. Or vise versa. It is pretty peaceful just sitting there, but i guess onl a ral fisherman would know that and not think its boring.
