Klemperer's EMI collaboration in 1967 was with Barenboim. The performances with Arrau were taken from the 1957 London Beethoven Cycle which also included the 1st and 2nd concertos - but never released. Arrau first appeared with Klemperer in 1925 in Wiesbaden to deputise for Schnabel in the Schumann concerto. They later collaborated in Beethoven's 3rd PC in Brussels in 1948. Later they collaborated in the Chopin 1st concert in Cologne in 1954 - available on CD.
I had no idea that Arrau teamed with Klemperer on this; his studio recording for EMI was with Galliera. From the coughs I can hear that it is a live performance;. many thanks for sharing this treasure. Your channel is one of my absolute favorites on YouTube.
Arrau teamed up with Klemperer on two other concertos, the 3rd and the Emperor. But I'm not sure if there is more Arrau/Klemperer (which is one of the greatest combinations ever).
yes, it's one of the greatest combinations for Beethoven ever! The 4th concerto I like more with Haitink, though. But the third with klemperer-no words, remember our long dispute about that? Merry Christmas!
@rva25 Never heard Arrau with Haitink. I haven't heard too many Cto. No. 4s, but the one I can remember right now is Hofmann/Ormandy and Haskil/Zecchi. Have you heard those?
And the 3rd with Klemperer; I heard it innumerable times and I never get bored of the sheer amazement that the recording gives. (but you really should hear Richter and Abendroth do that.)
Merry Christmas...but Christmas lost its original meaning here.
I've heard Haskil/Zecchi-that's great, never heard Hoffman/Ormandy{ but I'm not sure that Beethoven is his composer} and of course i've Richter/Abendroth version. what can I say? I think Arrau is a real king of all Betthoven concertos{ maybe exept the Emperor} About his rendition with Haitink-it's famous Phillips recording,i wish if you could hear that.
Yes a great concerto by my favourite composer and what a combination two of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century. Thankyou ,gracias Sinfoniette, for
wonderful ...

E' Arrau il massimo esecutore,a mio avviso, di questo magnifico concerto beetoveniano.
