I am from small country in Europe, this this is my best series, and one of best scenes. This could hapend to enyone,so if you have problems in your family, think twice.Love you father, mother, brother or sister,in the end family is the most important.
It's true that Virgillia was right about anti-slavery, but in the book she was more violent than was portrayed. It was mentioned in the book that she "Had to find a cause to work for, cause she couldn't find a boyfriend."
She fought hard with what was right and wrong. She was a good lady, but she was also a little evil. It seemed that she did not have control of herself at the end.
You can feel the pain of George when he realizes that he cannot save Virgilia. As "head of the family" he feel responsible for everyone in it, and he tried all he could for Virgilia, but she was on a destructive path.
I sympathize with Virgilia because I have my own unpopular cause that I am passionate about (i.e. I am pro-life), but I try to be careful how I bring it up in front of other people.
@rattiegirl5 - I, too, am proudly Pro-Life. It is better to live your life honestly, do what is right, and risk being unpopular than to live a lie to please others.
Actually, in the books by John Jakes, Virgilia survives and is a central character in the book "Heaven & Hell." In fact, it's Virgilia who delivers the coup de grace against Ashton in that book by telling her that the Hazards have taken control of Mont Royal.
It was tragic to see Virgilia go out like this. George was just devastated to see her sister hang. She meant well, but it was her killing of that senator that did her in.
I liked Virgillia's character. She was right in everything she said and did, but sometimes she was wrong for the way she embarrassed others with it. The way things were going, the north and south, slavery, ignorance, hate, she seemed like she was just ready to be done with it all together. When she brought up "Fate" and she hangs on the day of her anniversary, I remember how that made me feel empathetic for her. And the sound of sorrow in her voice, you could tell she was just ready to go.
I don't think there was anything he could do for her at that point. She killed a man and even a General in the army didn't have enough weight to get her out of hanging.

Here is a question. Pretend the civil war never happened, when does the south give up slavery?

I wish they really had put Virgillia in the book 3. Her character is alive in the 3rd book. Eh, the 3rd one sucked.

Indeed a very sad scene. I liked Virgilia's character in this series: the non conformist gorgeous Virgilia Hazzard.

George was the only one who ever tried to understand Virgilia.
