Whatever the Talmudic or rabbinical interpretations, the Magen (shield) of David - NOT "star" - is derived from an ancient ARCHAEOLOGICALLY VERIFIABLE pomegranate motif that occured throughout Israelite ritual vestments and architectural features - traditionally all the way back to Solomon. Whether or not David had the motif/symbol on his shield or not has yet to be archaeologically verified. Jews used it at least 17 centuries ago. That it is a very ancient Jewish symbol is beyond question.

First of all it's NOT a jewish symbol, but you can find it in various other cultures, like India, for example, it's present in buddhist mandalas... Interacting triangles have always symbolised two opposites that create the reality we're in now... It's therefore a strong magical symbol... :)
