I agree with most of the comments on here. Radio 1 is not the popular station it used to be. Despite what the polls may indicate, Radio 2 has taken over the top spot for the best UK radio station.
Many of the people who whinge about the way that Radio 1 changed were out of the target audience before it was revamped. It had to change, because it had been the same old stuff for decades. I don't like a lot of Radio 1 now, but it's not aimed at me, and I realise that.
Radio 1 is utter dog turd. You've got shite like Scott Mills, Chris Moyles, etc. I'd rather listen to my local radio station and that is also utter crap
radio 1 went downhill when matthew banninser took over and sacked all the old djs. then in july 1994 they shut down the am 1053/1089 wavelength. they lost millions of loyal listeners. meanwhile radio 2 was growing in popularity from 1996 and by 2000 they overtook radio 1 to become the most popular station in the uk and still is today because it was changed slowly and they adoped the 1990 radio 1 format, ratings by day, reputation by night.
@ntmdisco I agree radio 2 is better. But then again non-commercial/ mainstream music is better now! All the good music used to get recognised in its time now its...shite mainstream...
This was the best station in it Hay day, Steve Wright afternoon show on Radio 1 and two decade later he now on Radio 2. Plus Dave Lee Travis Bruno Brookes, Jackie Brambles and the list goes on. In the world of digital computer techonolgy. Radio 1 is no longer Britain favourite radio station, As Radio 2 over tooke Radio 1.. Long gone are the days of happy sound Radio 1..
Listening to these is bringing back memories. Haven't heard them for years, but yet I find myself humming and singing along. Like unlocking a long unused part of my brain.
Mr Mad here ill tell you who's mad anyone who tunes in to radio 1 now, the last 10 years has seen some of the shitist dj ever, if you are a crap dj apliy with in.
Radio one was always shit, and it still is. No real change, always was cheesy, still cheesy. I stopped listening to it in 1986, and from what I've caught since then, it remains as idiotic and childish as it always was.
Fair enough if you enjoy it or did enjoy it, each to their own (just don't make me listen to it and I won't make you listen to what I listen to!) but I really can't hear or see how it's changed. It always aimed for kids and was pretty dumb, and still does and is, in my opinion.
Radio 1 might not be the greatest station now but sadly what happend if Radio 1 and Radio 2 both played and appealed so same audience it wouldn't work. Radio 2 is for the middle aged some older ie 30 - 70. Radio 1 is aimed for under 30's but has a lot of listners under 25
Radio 1 Was Britans Number 1 Station From September 1967-September 1993 Then It Was Turned into Youth Station October 1993 All Thanks to Matthew Bannister
Radio 1 is absolute gash there newsbeat feature is the most dumb downed news in the country using sound effects to describe the story they are telling, i would say this is dumbing down there entire demographic but they must be thick enough to listen to it anyway, and don't get me started on chris moyles the fat rapist.
radio 1 is for kids its always been for kids its not that radio 1 has become crap its just i grew up and now i dimand abit more than fart jokes sexual inuendo and childish noises thats all
@mjd775 No, Really Radio 1 went back to being alright, which was it's aim to start with, competing with the commercial channels. Encouraged Late 20's and early thirties (past R1 listeners) to radio 2, and successfully without the stigma of "ha you listen to R2!". Their weekend line up on 2 is very good. It's a natural shift of age that radio 1 and 2 needed, but done with a silent, dignified change.
the ripped off alot of these jingles off from fm104 in dublin which were in use before radio started using them if you dont belive me search for fm104 jingeles here on youtube
lewis, yes Radio 2 is now most listened to station, but only since the 1990s. Before that, Radio 2 was an "old person's" station that no young person would even consider listening to. Radio 1 was top station in '90.
Yeah and time has proved us right. There's a big difference with Radio 1 in 1991 and Radio 1 now.Back then they had decent DJ's and decent music.Nowadays I prefer Radio 2 because half if not all of radio 1's ex-hosts like Mark Radcliffe,Steve Wright and Simon Mayo have now got shows on that station.
Radio 1 today is so awful and also it's not very good because there's no-one there left that I like either so I will not be listening to it again in future.
@darkliahos Radio 2 has been becoming the new Radio1 for years now. Mind you, I never liked Radio 1 that much, even in its "glory Days". I tend to finf jingles inane, cheesy and stupid in the main. Or maybe thats me missing the point lol.
I've never heard this Simon Bates promo before, so thanks for posting it. Be nice to hear it a little less conpressed. And if you could do the same for the 1987 Bates-narrated promo... only ever heard that on awful-quality medium wave.
NO they usually switched on the 1053/1089 transmitters around 4.45am usually low power on MW then the power was increased to full and the station presenter engaged the 440Hz test-tone until 4.50 then 5 minutes of beep! silence beep! and at 4.55 the opening radio1 jinglemontage would kick in and the station would start dead on 5am with the first programme.
Bring Back The Radio 1 Old Jingles 1980 - 1995 with their name Jingles on Bruno Brookes Steve Wright Mark Goodier Simon Bates they were the Best djs of all time

Radio One today is just so dead
Poor from 93 it bled and bled
Getting rid of presenters that we know and love
And playing some crappy music
The shit sound of britain radio gone!
AnthonyUK 2 years ago 4
these were the days,
when Radio 1 was realiy
Radio 1, when it launched
in '67, Radio 1 changed
British music forever, it tranformed
the way we look at Radio,
but then in '93 that Ba(nni)stard(er)
ruined it, and after '93 Radio 1
was Radio 1 no more.
