  • According to wikipedia a lot of shit went down in Neshabur, Iran. But the most interesting among them is this: In 1221 Ghenghis Khan's son-in-law was killed in Neshabur so his wife (Ghenghis Khan's daughter) ordered death upon the whole city, and had the skulls of men woman and children stacked into neat little pyramids.

This is one of many incidents that took place in Neshabur, whether or not Carlos wrote this song about it, we can only imagine...

  • Neshabur is in iran, maybe caros wrote this song after having sex with a hot iranian girl.......

  • @folladordeprostis Don't know about iranian girls but I'd like to play doctor with the black girl on that album cover!

  • I think that even though he's predominately a pentatonic noodler, Santana is somewhat of a fusion guitarist. He uses natural and harmonic minor alot, and he does have quite a few worthwhile jazz compositions too.

  • i told santana that this was my favorite song. i met him at the earth shoe store in deptford, nj in 1976.

  • Not sure of why the incident happened, but Neshabur / Nishapur is in Iran. It is the home of the ancient Persian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyám.

  • I smoked my first joint at a Santana concert in LA in 1969, a week later I was dealing. Thank you Carlos.

  • @smokiebird06 Are you aware that Carlos Santana is very much anti-drugs? Blame yourself for becoming a dealer, no one else.

  • @lisathechocoholic trust me. he smoked a shitload of dope. i have friends that knew him well back then. so fuck off

  • Man this is the first time i listen to this song. Meanwhile writing a term paper on evolution.lol but i cant help and get distracted. I think of a time when my bf and I get that feeling when we are alone. Silence instills upon us and we look at each other. We just know that a night of passion lays ahead. We cant wait to rip each other apart yet we try to conceal our urge and take it slow. Damn, i want him right now. lol

  • BEST ALBUM COVER OF ALL TIME!!!!

  • he neeeds to get back in writing stuff like this, he's getting too comfortable with his compilations, though they are amazing and i love em all, i wanna hear the Santana Band rocking out to this stuff more

  • what was the incident though?

  • Master Carlos Santana is a national treasure and I discovered his music at the age of 12 when a older primo turned me on to him and smoke [ pot ] all in the same night, I have never stopped listening to his music and I catch his concerts whenever he's on the east coast. Bravo Carlos Santana you have made your Mexican American Familia Proud.

  • This one and crying winds

  • He will play this every so often in concert. I got lucky and heard it in April 08.

  • Ive been listening to this for so long and Im still blasten it.

  • I had my first sexual experiences listening to this album.....

  • The 1% is a puzzle. God, this is just utterly fantastic, even after hearing it thousands of times since 1970 up to this day.

  • What pus brain disliked this masterpiece. Perfect in every musical sense. Balanced, ballsey and blue!

  • My Mom turn me on to this in the 70's and God Bless her!

  • @neeneecarmen bless her indeed , love it !

  • Interesting, for this was the first album I ever bought. I must have been about 13 years old at the time.

This song became one my favorite in that album. But, only after I'd heard the album many, many times. I'm dense sometime!

    A.

  • wonderful piano

  • The piano at the start is fucking AMAZING!!

  • Silky smooth. Never thought about it till just now but Incident at Neshabur is a taste at what was to come (stylistically) with Caravanserai...

  • This song is well.... amazing.... incredible.... what words do it justice. How bout the short little tempo changes around 235... then into... bliss.....

  • @wchristo100 when I first heard this song aged 14, I was blown away by the constant tempo changes and the subtle key changes. And when I heard 3:40 onwards...!

  • latin rock at its best!

  • The entire album is stunning.

  • the ending is the best :)

  • music is suppose to the you somewhere. inter act with your mind. santana is the tripmaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @knabein He is.

  • Priceless.

  • @MingitarMingoMango Yes! Priceless. Priceless indeed.

  • COLD A COLD TREAT

  • What's the piano on this? I do not remember hearing that.

  • @777jones i think its because this is remastered and you know how some instruments gets buried unto the song you can barely hear it

  • @777jones ALberto Gianquintano my friend....what a song...

  • Pure genius.

  • I had forgotten about this album, although I often still play Welcome and LDS. This might be the best ever Santana track. The organ, piano, guitar and percussion blend so well, it is not just a Latin vehicle for CS to play his usual and to my mind rather meaningless stuff over the top (apologies Santana fans, just a personal opinion). This is magic. Post-Welcome he deliberately went after the money rather than the magic, but side 1 of Abraxas, and all of Welcome and LDS, are beautiful...

  • This one of my fav songs *EVAH*

  • Tight percussion!

  • One of rock's true masterpieces. It's not often beauty is so strong it brings tears to my eyes . . .

    Elisabeth

  • @erscott13 it's hard to explain, but i know exactly what you mean; the breakdown around 1:48 til 2:20 or so just sends chills down my spine; and the entire second half of the song does the same; absolutely beautiful

  • I HAVE THIS CASETTE AND WHEN I BECOME A FAMOUS GUITARIST I'LL SAY "HEY DUDE,,, I LISTENED TO THIS WITH MY DAD WHEN I WAS I KID,,,, NOW I SMOKE WEED AND PLAY THINGS EVEN BETTER THAN THIS"

  • tsssssssss otra para recordar

  • I heard this album on some heavy acid. Around 3:00 there's some crazy, loud feedback. I just remember being so scared and anxious during that part, and IMMEDIATELY feeling relieved and calm when it stops. It goes from the wildest, unleashed notes to soft, serene picking. Ah, I'll never forget this album.

  • Heard this live by Santana 2 weeks ago in Tampa. Unbelievable close to the original sound, just a slight different arrangement in some guitar parts. If you have the chance go see him on the European leg of the tour, he's better now than in the 80's and 90's; very close to the 69-77 sound and songs, band great professionals!

  • wow, it'd be hard to find piano playing anywhere with more raw emotion

  • This is "JAZZ-ROCK" by Santana!

  • The first time I heard Santana play my dick stood straight up and it hasn't come down since. Thank you Carlos.

  • es una canción hermosa.Admiro la evolución que desarrolla, pasando por diferentes ritmos y pautas. es una historia contada a traves de los ritmos.

  • A beautiful musical Journey

  • It would be absolutely impossible to find a song from Carlos that doessn't move a person.

  • this is now considered Jass by the modern writers.

  • @jmvguy

I would probably categorize this as fusion myself its certainly not rock in the traditional sense of the word, but who cares its pretty amazing :)

  • @TheDjango99 With the perspective of ..what,almost 40 years it's easy to call it whatever you want to call it.You could call it cupcakes.Back then it was called rock-n-roll:)

  • Like mad passionate lovers including the "After Glow".

  • superb composition...!!! a masterpiece.

  • Jessica is to Allman Brothers as Incident at Neshabur is to Santana.

  • Santanaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!.

  • Fantastic! Santana in the best times. Incident was my favorite song in that style.

  • Greatest ever man

    song brings a tear

  • Greatest ever man

    song brings a tear

  • one hell of an story in this intrumental piece almost a detective story where the hero finds the true meaning of life and love.

  • great aggressive song, one of my personal favorites.

  • Love this song

Wish someone would upload the version from Lotus though

  • first santana album i ever bought, i ended up with over 30 lol...

  • Lovely~

  • santana cet super TANKyou YOU TUBE

  • santana super Tanks youtube

  • Always.... as a kid in 1970s _ theValley...

  • Just soul music....that's he play.

    INMORTAL

  • i grew up listening to this my mom used to always play this in the car

  • The part from 2:51 and on is just amazing. I remember when I heard the song the first time, I had to look and search for this song for a long time, but then I found it.

  • The 2nd half of this tune was apparently inspired by Burt Bacharach's 'This Guy's in Love with You'.

  • Ave entre las patas o, conga entre ave? Las dos me gustan igual.

  • Nishapur is a city in northeast Iran which is the place this song is about.

  • what is neshabur/??

  • Definately my favorite song from this album...My number one Santana album of all time.

  • santana 3!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @mathiasguzman the best album of that style for all the rest of time

  • @mathiasguzman I'm torn between "Samba Pa Ti" and "Hope You're Feeling Better" for faves, but this is damn good, too.

  • @mathiasguzman With the greatest respect........................Caravanseri

  • @teddingtontcu

I am in total agreement, that Caravanseri is the greatest album put forth by Santana. Abraxas still remains MY favorite album, based on the fact, that at the age of 7, it was the first album that I ever pulled off my dads record shelf. I have been a Santana fan ever since. Written on the cover of that album (which I still have to this day), are the words, "These groovy sounds belong to Chuck Guzman, El brown."...

  • awesome song

  • soooo rich.....

  • A classic album..i have the original master recording gold cd from mobile fidelity sound labs...i play it alot.

  • one lucky guy

  • Santana means Saint Ana, who used to be the Goddess Diana- Mother Nature- demoted by the Vatican.

But the God Abraxas- pre dates all the others deities - Greek, Egyptian, and Babylonian- may have been from Atlantis or Lemuria- Peace Carlitos is badass

  • If you can,t feel these beatiful notes you got soul . Jimi,s gift to all stayed to see him at Woodstock . Carlos was there and the Inspiration of Jimi changed his sound forever. Thanks for post of this beatiful song.

  • Santana's tribute to Toussaint touches on the long history of intercultural contact within and among islands in the Caribbean. The 1937 incident took place, in part, because U.S. backed Machado dictatorship expelled Haitian sugarcane workers from Cuba, forcing them to seek work in the D.R. where the U.S. backed Trujillo regime ordered them slaughtered. Yet Santana's songs about Toussaint and the battle of Neshabur also draw on a long tradition of Haitian influence in Afracan American music

  • the song is something to due with something in Iran. Thats what i herd.

  • A beautiful and very soulful blues. So many changes too; this song changes directions about 3 or 4 times along the way. And Carlos' 1st solo break is one of my favorites.

This is the best tune on a great great album. Nobody in rock was playing music like this back in 1970, nobody. Santana at their peak.

  • Neshabur is a restaurant in San Francisco. The "incident" refers to the time that they burned Carlos' eggs. He was pretty pissed!

  • is that true?? jaajajaja great inspiracion to write a song...lol

  • smokiebird06. Neshabur is some freeking city in Iran.

  • I was 23 when this came out ( yeah, get over it! ) and I smoked many a doobs listening to this "album". He's still my all time favorite guitarist. You know what? I think I'll do some herb right now. Eat your hearts out!!

  • Wild times I spent nights listening to this album. I was 15 back then and yes, as they say: I smoked a lot a pot o.k. But this is the music that set me free: Drumming oye Chepito, hey Michael!

  • 2:37 -------Jaw dropping

  • Totally agree - one of rock's great moments. 2.37 was an ear-opener for me when I was a young teenager. I thought how can rock sound so sweet?!

  • this him at his best non-commerial great sound

    thanx

  • i love this song soooo much! brings back great memories, of mexico...and good times....

  • Music, when musicians could play. Santana still one of the few, one of the best.

  • musta been a helluva incident!

    Elise

  • Elise:

I believe it was written about Toussaint le Overture's victory over French forces to gain Independence from France for Haiti.

  • Wow, that's awesome!

  • That's exactly the incident Carlos named the tune 4, U must be a Santana fan 2, or U got a LOT of time on your hands! Peace

  • Well santana is a class above.

    bands nowadays a just wannabes.

  • To me it says: "After the tumult - it'll all be OK"

  • There isn't a group out there in today's music that can compare to the wild, timeless, magical and inspired inventivness and the pure, raw energy of Carlos Santana Band in all of the songs on this entire albulm. Thanks for putting it out there for us all to enjoy.

  • there is one band i can think of

a sweedish band called Opeth, who have been around for a few years now, still show us that classical still has its place in modern day music

Opeth show us that you can mix classical guitar, piano, clean vocals, drums, everything

and still come out with music that will live on for years to come

p.s. you cant listen to one opeth song and make a decision on them btw

  • I totally agree with your suggestion of Opeth.

  • That band comes nowhere near Santana. It's not even the same type of music. Phish was the last really great band with good musical skills.

  • Stellar Santana!! This soulful tune is like a time machine, takes me immediately back. Choice post, much appreciated!

  • Probably the finest piece of rock/jazz music ever written and performed. It's tight, lucid, lyrical, instrumental, percussive, elaborate, simple, evocative, creative all at the same time. Every instrument is separate yet they all come together like some rock orchestra. No one instrument is dominant (except maybe the guitar which is the thread which sews it all together), and in the background is a persistent latin percussion. And then it ends with a pure mellow tie-up. Genius.

  • Preach it Brother. Totally agree, that it's at least one of the best pieces of fusion music ever written. It's hard to who is better on this track: Rollie or Santana. The groove during the opening keyboard solo is absolutely killer as well.

  • My favorite too.

  • This album never gets old.

    Viva Santana !!!

  • This is my favorite song on this album.

    Thanks

  • by far...
