According to wikipedia a lot of shit went down in Neshabur, Iran. But the most interesting among them is this: In 1221 Ghenghis Khan's son-in-law was killed in Neshabur so his wife (Ghenghis Khan's daughter) ordered death upon the whole city, and had the skulls of men woman and children stacked into neat little pyramids.
This is one of many incidents that took place in Neshabur, whether or not Carlos wrote this song about it, we can only imagine...
I think that even though he's predominately a pentatonic noodler, Santana is somewhat of a fusion guitarist. He uses natural and harmonic minor alot, and he does have quite a few worthwhile jazz compositions too.
Man this is the first time i listen to this song. Meanwhile writing a term paper on evolution.lol but i cant help and get distracted. I think of a time when my bf and I get that feeling when we are alone. Silence instills upon us and we look at each other. We just know that a night of passion lays ahead. We cant wait to rip each other apart yet we try to conceal our urge and take it slow. Damn, i want him right now. lol
he neeeds to get back in writing stuff like this, he's getting too comfortable with his compilations, though they are amazing and i love em all, i wanna hear the Santana Band rocking out to this stuff more
Master Carlos Santana is a national treasure and I discovered his music at the age of 12 when a older primo turned me on to him and smoke [ pot ] all in the same night, I have never stopped listening to his music and I catch his concerts whenever he's on the east coast. Bravo Carlos Santana you have made your Mexican American Familia Proud.
This song is well.... amazing.... incredible.... what words do it justice. How bout the short little tempo changes around 235... then into... bliss.....
@wchristo100 when I first heard this song aged 14, I was blown away by the constant tempo changes and the subtle key changes. And when I heard 3:40 onwards...!
I had forgotten about this album, although I often still play Welcome and LDS. This might be the best ever Santana track. The organ, piano, guitar and percussion blend so well, it is not just a Latin vehicle for CS to play his usual and to my mind rather meaningless stuff over the top (apologies Santana fans, just a personal opinion). This is magic. Post-Welcome he deliberately went after the money rather than the magic, but side 1 of Abraxas, and all of Welcome and LDS, are beautiful...
@erscott13 it's hard to explain, but i know exactly what you mean; the breakdown around 1:48 til 2:20 or so just sends chills down my spine; and the entire second half of the song does the same; absolutely beautiful
I HAVE THIS CASETTE AND WHEN I BECOME A FAMOUS GUITARIST I'LL SAY "HEY DUDE,,, I LISTENED TO THIS WITH MY DAD WHEN I WAS I KID,,,, NOW I SMOKE WEED AND PLAY THINGS EVEN BETTER THAN THIS"
I heard this album on some heavy acid. Around 3:00 there's some crazy, loud feedback. I just remember being so scared and anxious during that part, and IMMEDIATELY feeling relieved and calm when it stops. It goes from the wildest, unleashed notes to soft, serene picking. Ah, I'll never forget this album.
Heard this live by Santana 2 weeks ago in Tampa. Unbelievable close to the original sound, just a slight different arrangement in some guitar parts. If you have the chance go see him on the European leg of the tour, he's better now than in the 80's and 90's; very close to the 69-77 sound and songs, band great professionals!
@TheDjango99 With the perspective of ..what,almost 40 years it's easy to call it whatever you want to call it.You could call it cupcakes.Back then it was called rock-n-roll:)
The part from 2:51 and on is just amazing. I remember when I heard the song the first time, I had to look and search for this song for a long time, but then I found it.
I am in total agreement, that Caravanseri is the greatest album put forth by Santana. Abraxas still remains MY favorite album, based on the fact, that at the age of 7, it was the first album that I ever pulled off my dads record shelf. I have been a Santana fan ever since. Written on the cover of that album (which I still have to this day), are the words, "These groovy sounds belong to Chuck Guzman, El brown."...
Santana means Saint Ana, who used to be the Goddess Diana- Mother Nature- demoted by the Vatican.
But the God Abraxas- pre dates all the others deities - Greek, Egyptian, and Babylonian- may have been from Atlantis or Lemuria- Peace Carlitos is badass
If you can,t feel these beatiful notes you got soul . Jimi,s gift to all stayed to see him at Woodstock . Carlos was there and the Inspiration of Jimi changed his sound forever. Thanks for post of this beatiful song.
Santana's tribute to Toussaint touches on the long history of intercultural contact within and among islands in the Caribbean. The 1937 incident took place, in part, because U.S. backed Machado dictatorship expelled Haitian sugarcane workers from Cuba, forcing them to seek work in the D.R. where the U.S. backed Trujillo regime ordered them slaughtered. Yet Santana's songs about Toussaint and the battle of Neshabur also draw on a long tradition of Haitian influence in Afracan American music
A beautiful and very soulful blues. So many changes too; this song changes directions about 3 or 4 times along the way. And Carlos' 1st solo break is one of my favorites.
This is the best tune on a great great album. Nobody in rock was playing music like this back in 1970, nobody. Santana at their peak.
I was 23 when this came out ( yeah, get over it! ) and I smoked many a doobs listening to this "album". He's still my all time favorite guitarist. You know what? I think I'll do some herb right now. Eat your hearts out!!
Wild times I spent nights listening to this album. I was 15 back then and yes, as they say: I smoked a lot a pot o.k. But this is the music that set me free: Drumming oye Chepito, hey Michael!
There isn't a group out there in today's music that can compare to the wild, timeless, magical and inspired inventivness and the pure, raw energy of Carlos Santana Band in all of the songs on this entire albulm. Thanks for putting it out there for us all to enjoy.
Probably the finest piece of rock/jazz music ever written and performed. It's tight, lucid, lyrical, instrumental, percussive, elaborate, simple, evocative, creative all at the same time. Every instrument is separate yet they all come together like some rock orchestra. No one instrument is dominant (except maybe the guitar which is the thread which sews it all together), and in the background is a persistent latin percussion. And then it ends with a pure mellow tie-up. Genius.
Preach it Brother. Totally agree, that it's at least one of the best pieces of fusion music ever written. It's hard to who is better on this track: Rollie or Santana. The groove during the opening keyboard solo is absolutely killer as well.
According to wikipedia a lot of shit went down in Neshabur, Iran. there is one band i can think of
a sweedish band called Opeth, who have been around for a few years now, still show us that classical still has its place in modern day music
Opeth show us that you can mix classical guitar, piano, clean vocals, drums, everything
and still come out with music that will live on for years to come
p.s. you cant listen to one opeth song and make a decision on them btw
godishomo99 3 years ago
