In the early 90's, I used to watch Aeroflot departing from Stuttgart with more than a little trepidation... the trail of smoke they belched out made me feel uneasy! A pilot once told me the Russians designed them that way so, when the avionics failed, it would be possible for the pilots to find their way back to the aerodrome. I have always been in awe of Russia's modern warbirds, so what gives with the clunky passenger jets?
