Rozhestvenskii deserves credit for getting the full fleet together and sailing it all the 33000 kilometres to the Sea of Japan despite British hostility, the inexperience of his crew, and the obsolescence of a large portion of his ships. He deserves none whatsoever for taking the shortest and most obvious route (Tsushima) to Vladivostok, where he was trapped between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese home islands without room for manoeuvre, instead of going around the east of Japan.
He deserves even less credit for his incredibly clumsy handling of the initial stages of the battle.After all the months at sea, he still obviously had no battle plan, and took the one course - a pitched battle against a faster and better-armed enemy force - guaranteed to fail. Like Speer at Jutland, he could - and should - have charged the enemy in line abreast when his T was crossed, and he probably would have got through with relatively few losses. Verdict: the culpability was his.
It's almost impossible to get nowadays except to go to Japan or to order it online.
I have a copy my Dad got in Japan on a business trip. The subtitling job was horrid but if you can get past the bad translations it's a good film.\

@nik5020 I doubt that very much. Russians may have avenged for Russian-Japanese war in general - maybe. But not for Tsushima. Not a single battle against Japanese navy was won by USSR. And in case Stalin would try to give such battle even those ships left from the IJN by late 1945 were enough to sink all the Stalin's Red Fleet.

I always call the Japanese the 'Germans' of Asia. Out of the 28 battleships sent by the Tsar, 21 were sunk and 7 captured. Nearly 5,000 dead and 5,000 captured men. This was the true cause of WWI, for it emboldened the Central Powers which fed of off Russian weakness. Had they won, WWI might have been averted.

Any how, WWI naval warfare was brutal, I doubt that any modern Navy or political & military leaders could dare to do what they did if they were in their place. We have become too dependant on "Modern" weapons that take away the actual watching of an enemy ship neing sank with most of its crew.

@Idealist2011, take out the Torpedo Boats and the numbers drop to 20 plus Russian ships vs 27 Japanese warships. I guess the Japanese used their numerical superiority in Torpedo boats as the equivalent of aircraft in WWII against the surface flleets of the allies.

With the tired Russian force still in columns as they tried to press on to their base, the Japanese fleet was able to deploy into the most favourable formation - a line ahead across the Russians' bows. But if the Russians had also been drawn up in line alongside Togo... the fight may have been harder.
@KrillLiberator I doubt it. The Russians had just spent months traveling across the world. They were exhausted, in need of replenishment, and generally in poor shape. Likewise, while their sailors were brave they were mostly constripts and as Port Arthur had already fallen they were in effect fighting for a cause already lost. The Japanese might have been inferior on paper, but were better trained and led. The Russians had effectively already lost before the battle had even started.

Tsushima was ruled the So Clan, a Japanese feudal clan. The So Clan surrendered to Joseon on July 3rd 1419. Joseon granted the So Clan a special priviledge where it monopolized Japanese trade with Korea. Japanese mercahants would have to trade with Korea through Tsushima. The So Clan grew rich from such arrangement.

@elexxtremo Why save the carriers and not the battleships? At that time battleship were still believed to be the powerhorse of navies. And why not prepare defenses before the attack if they knew it was coming? It could have saved a lot of american soldier and destroyed a lot of the japanese attacking power. If you want to revise history try at least to be logic about it.
The US knew by WW2 that Battleships were no longer as key as carriers, even if some of the hardline admirals didn't agree, hence why many were kept. But consider between WW1 and WW2 16 of America's planned Battleships were cancelled in favour of carriers, or converted to carriers.
That was because of the Washington Treaty, not due to carriers being "the next big thing". The U.S. converted ships and built carriers because we had none when the treaty was signed.
I studied this in Naval Science. Had Togo closed in as strategy of the time dictated, he would have been defeated despite his number advantage. The Russians had the best armor and high-velocity AP shells. However, Togo used the superior speed of his fleet to maneuver in/out of range concentrating fire on single ships. Because of the range, the shells overshot the thick Russian armor and set fire to the wooden decks. Togo not only revolutionised naval strategy, but also future designs of warships

@Idealist2011 The paper strength of the Russian squadron was superior (in theory) to the Japanese force. Tactics played a huge part in redressing the relative fighting values of both fleets. With the tired Russian force still in columns as they tried to press on to their base, the Japanese fleet was able to deploy into the most favourable formation - a line ahead across the Russians' bows. But if the Russians had also been drawn up in line alongside Togo... the fight may have been harder.

@KrillLiberator I doubt it. The Russians had just spent months traveling across the world. They were exhausted, in need of replenishment, and generally in poor shape. Likewise, while their sailors were brave they were mostly constripts and as Port Arthur had already fallen they were in effect fighting for a cause already lost. The Japanese might have been inferior on paper, but were better trained and led. The Russians had effectively already lost before the battle had even started.

@Ranillon Very true IRO the quality of Russian naval personnel and the fact that the fleet was effectively ambushed; however, it's worth noting that (despite what we see in this excellent film) the available first-hand accounts clearly indicate that the Russian gunnery was initially of an excellent standard (as it had been at the Yellow Sea); repeated hits were being scored against the Japanese heavy units by the lead Russian vessels at almost five miles range.

Joseon granted the So Clan a special priviledge where it monopolized Japanese trade with Korea. Japanese mercahants would have to trade with Korea through Tsushima. The So Clan grew rich from such arrangement.

Ну что же... Если честно, то - очень красивая победа Японского флота над Российским. Нам же остаётся лишь оплакивать корабли и их экипажи уже как более века. Но (!), сражались - геройски. Пройти почти вокруг Света чёрти-знает на чём (броненосцы, не прошедшие полных приёмных испытаний, "старички", овеянные славой) и, не имея ни разведданных, ни (уже) моральных сил (не забывайте, сколько длился поход и факт того, что Порт-Артур давно был сдан).

@spanish111japan I found this- "Nihonkai Daikaisen"- on a site for Asian movies, I THINK it might have been "lets-look" but I'm not sure. Indeed it's very rare. You can also buy it from TOHO, the studio who made it. That's a better idea, but I suspect that the (c) expired...
A warning: the English subtitles the movie file came with are REALLY BAD (more like lots of Engrish) and I don't recommend them. I made my own subtitle edits to fix that, so if you want them, PM me and I'll send them to you.

I dunno, but when I was 15 my parents didn't mind me watching war films, as long as they weren't ultra-gory. >.< This movie isn't gory, but as expected, some characters will get shot and blown up on camera. You really don't see much blood, though, so I doubt your folks will mind in terms of appropriateness. В первую капманию во взводе было двадцать восемь молодых солдат, собранных из разных частей, ни одного пехотинца обученного не было, не было боевого слаживания, и за месяц взвод научился воевать. До сих пор каждого помню, переписываемся.
И в первую и во вторую им пиздюлей вставили, и если бы ебланы - политики не мешали и не вязали руки армии, хрен бы кто слышал про чеченцев с мая 1995-го.

Мой дед пропал без вести защищая Украину в 1942, а брат моей бабушки дошел до Берлина. Многие мои соотечественники не вернулись со второй мировой и многие стали героями СССР. Кроме того российская армия снабжала армян оружием и солдатами. Вспомним хоть те преступления которые русские солдаты совершили вместе с армянами. И тем более тогда у нас армии как таковой не было. А в Приднестровье я не был. Ничего не могу сказать.

@sla165 Кстати у меня к тебе встречный вопрос. Вот вместо того чтобы обливать друг-друга грязными словами, скажи мне что тебе кавказцы такое сделали что ты так их ненавидешь? Допустим возьмем меня. Я же тебя не оскорблял, не хамил. Почему ты начал фигню писать? Не кажется что ты и многие вроде тебя виноваты в том что кавказцы и русские так часто ссорятся?

Где-то слышите всякий бред и сразу верите. Кавказ это не только Чечня. В Азербайджане тысячу русских живут. В мире и согласии. Никто их не трогает и не обижает. У меня куча друзей русских. А если и русских и ненавидят то за дело. За репрессии во время СССР. За убийство мирных жителей во время развала СССР и т.д.

@Elealy У тебя, али, мозги если и были, то давно получили сотрясения под ударами русских членов. Я говорил не о регулярной иракской армии, а о партизанах, таких же, как чичи, только ниоткуда не получавших помощи. А если ты любишь заниматься политическими прогнозами, то советую набрать в поисковике "Пророки и уроки" - там очень хорошо показано, что с такими гадалками делает Россия.

@elexxtremo Why save the carriers and not the battleships? At that time battleship were still believed to be the powerhorse of navies. And why not prepare defenses before the attack if they knew it was coming? It could have saved a lot of american soldier and destroyed a lot of the japanese attacking power. If you want to revise history try at least to be logic about it.

The US knew by WW2 that Battleships were no longer as key as carriers, even if some of the hardline admirals didn't agree, hence why many were kept. But consider between WW1 and WW2 16 of America's planned Battleships were cancelled in favour of carriers, or converted to carriers.

That was because of the Washington Treaty, not due to carriers being "the next big thing". The U.S. converted ships and built carriers because we had none when the treaty was signed.

Глупость командования, что на берегу, что в море (исключая действия Кондратенко и Макарова) привела к тяжелым последствиям.
Японии не стоит гордиться этой победой, науськанные Англией и Америкой - победили Российскую империю.
Во второй мировой никуда не делись - получили по башке. С Сахалина пришлось убраться. И на Кунашир нечего облизываться.

えーと、人から聞いた話で裏付けは取ってない上にうろ覚えですけど
日本海軍はこの決戦の前に激しい訓練を行って（平時の演習で１年で使う弾薬を３日で使いきる位）いたそうです
その結果、命中精度が３倍に上がっていたとか聞きました。
あと砲撃で戦艦が沈んだのはこの海戦が史上初だったとか

I studied this in Naval Science. Had Togo closed in as strategy of the time dictated, he would have been defeated despite his number advantage. The Russians had the best armor and high-velocity AP shells. However, Togo used the superior speed of his fleet to maneuver in/out of range concentrating fire on single ships. Because of the range, the shells overshot the thick Russian armor and set fire to the wooden decks. Togo not only revolutionised naval strategy, but also future designs of warships
