I have to play this piece for my final exam in May. I find it beautiful and emotionally strong but it is quite difficult to interpret. I guess I just need more time to be able to understand every little part of it. Martha Argerich's interpretation inspires me, her interpretation is perfect. She's like a goddess to me.
i understand! but i am that opinion, that this music doesn t need another creativity! it is so nice and charming in itself,,,and Argerich knows it! She is brilliant!
I firmly believe that dislike comments are so profound that people can find time to enjoy them regardless of how many times they are reiterated. Humans possess a boundless capacity for contriving different ways to phrase dislike comments, and today we are honored to be among the pioneers of this invaluable skill.
I agree, this is a brilliant peace, but it's difficulty is not one of Brahms toughest scores,it has great dynamics and Marth plays it with the best feeling I have heard yet
very strange the way she read the developpment in G major. Where are the bass ? she put this like a 4 notes melody but this is a white notes and two blacks notes upon Oo..
I like this interpretation but consider Solomon's deeper, more tenebrous and misterious... so more exciting. This is to be explained in the character of the sound: Solomon p and pp are somehow 'fuller', endowed with an energy coming more from the Unconscious, while in Argerich I have the impression the beautiful dynamics comes more from the 'Intellect'.
This performance is world-class, but respectfully it it edged slightly by Artur Rubinstein's. Aergerich is a magnificent artist and (this is meant with respect) when she was young, in her twenties and thirties, she was an extraordinarily beautiful and attractive young woman.
@spiderwomanatl hehe you sound exactly like my mother. I did my performers certificate when I was 16 and had a ten year reprieve, finally picked it up this year and am doing my ATCL (I don't have a piano thus have to practice at her place). Needless to say I have a very happy mum again:) xxx
I played this song last summer and I'm trying to relearn it...... Not that I could ever compare to this epic amazingness. I just want to remember it. XD Luckily I kept the sheets so it won't be too bad.
Kill me!! The sound she makes doesn't even sound like she's playing the piano! That sounded negative..but this is the way the piece was meant to be. She is not at all confined by the sheet music! She created this interpretation with no bounds!
@pinchofsalt100 Mourissi was giving a compliment to the pianist by insulting the taste of the 9 idiots who don't think this piece is exquisite in every conceivable way.
It wouldn't surprise me if they cleaned it up a little.
That said, there a lot of performences floating around from the 1960s by a variety of other pianists/other musicians, as well as many other of Ms. Argerich's recordings around 1965-66 which sound pretty good to me.
@DinosaurBones97 i personally love this piece, but that's not a fair statement...one's intelligence and one's affinity for a brahm's piece have no relation
Wow. Wow. I've always been a fan of Argerich, as she expresses most in her interpretations. But wow...I feel, literally, overloaded with emotions!!!
This is the best song and I've heard it many times recently due to piano competitions - but nothing can compare to this meaningful interpretation...WOW!!!
i love this song! i so much like playing it! good interpretation of Martha Argerich... i also love how she interpretates the concerto for piano and orchestra number 3 from Tchaikovsky :) marvelous!
I just don't understand on the composer standpoint, why gripe on the sonata form, when (to me) force fittingly is not very aesthetic. I like Beethoven's logic.
I think that it's the best interpretation that we can find on Youtube , but I completely agree with "
pianoman727 ". There are many unjustified arguments, like crescendos / decrescendos, or the increased tempo. Even if it's not " amazing ", it's a very great piece, played by a wonderful pianist !

@bestskater94 uauauauauauaauau....she plays superficially??? ...so,how I would play superficially...traslation :in this perfect way, using her magic prhasing and dynamic !
I agree with you. What an incredible pianist. I know nothing about technicalities, only what I like to hear. I don't question the genius of either Rachmaninoff or Argerich. But I love to listen to her. She makes me cry and I feel as terrible as this sounds for a novice to say, she makes Rachmaninoff seem ordinary when I know he is anything but...I would do anything to have a musical gift like hers. Incredible!
after learning the piece and comparing serveral interpretations,i found "Radu Lupu"'s version the most appealing.he seems 2 have a natural flair 4 Brahms.
Martha is amazing! The tempo fluctuations are quite intriguing; she turns Brahms' work into her own masterpiece, very lyrical, poignant, and introspective.
LOL, didn't know music playing is a beauty contest. Jeewiz, I must have missed out a lot. So according to your opinion, we have to send Jeffry Tate home and banish him from this world. Am I reading you right? Sir?
Comparing her to Clara Schumann may not be appropriate as Ms. Argerich's mercurial disposition, both professionally and personally, would place her far from the "virtuous" Clara in comparison. With her Latin temperament maybe comparing her to a Teresa Carreno would be more in line. However, there is this Brahms thing that both Clara and Martha seem to share in...
Virtuosically comparable to Novaes or Renard (Renard from Chile, Novaes from Brazil), but I think her kind of playing is highly individual so much so that aguably she is in her own class.
I agree. I find myself accepting almost everything she does. Argerich has individuality, a quality that I think is rarer today than it was during bygone "golden age" of romantic piano playing. Argerich is a true romantic, and that is part of her appeal for me. Listen to 1st mvmt of her Chopin 2nd Sonata if you haven't already! You mentioned Novaes--probably my alltime favorite female pianist! Now THERE was a pianist....
...who in the late Harold Schonberg's words was "one of the few who could be imaginative without sounding mannered". I still think she had the most beautiful tone of any pianist I ever heard, live or recorded...with the possible exception of Hofmann or Cortot (and those 2 are before my time)...but I was lucky enough to have heard Novaes once in person, near the end of her career. I think Argerich in many ways is a pianist in that tradition...I love what she does here with the Brahms!
Have you heard Rosita Renard? She was a senior student of Arrau under Krause but only made one set of live recordings at Carnegie Hall at the end of her life, since she devoted most of her time to teaching. I think she's more similar to Argerich than Novaes, incredible color, power, speed from both pianists.
No, unfortunately I haven't, though I do know of those recordings. One of my teachers, Gyorgy Sandor, once spoke of having been on a sea voyage from South America to either Europe or North America in the 1940s and having been very impressed by a woman pianist he heard playing in the ship's lounge. He later found out that this pianist was Rosita Renard!
I just listened to her Chopin Etudes and Mendelssohn Variations serieuses--fabulous!! You are exactly right--she shared a strong temperament and awesome technique with Argerich--lucky are those who got to study with her!
dit is zeker een zeergoed intretatie zeker de twee de keer dat ze het octavan stukje speelt met de linker hand een goed cresendo en dat is zeer zeker niet makelijk daar
I can vouch for how technically challenging this piece is, my sister is learning it right now. I'm not a pianist, but I am thoroughly impressed with Algerich.
@toolatescissors It's not technically challenging at all compared to most other works pianists like Argerich play. I've been practising this piece for two days and haven't come across any technical hurdles
I think I might be playing a different version, because it seems like she repeats sections multiple times that aren't written that way in the music. I can play this after about 10 weeks of practice, and I take it at a much faster tempo. I don't like how Argerich varies the tempo so much. There are huge sways back and forth, slower to quicker, and it's kind of disorienting.
