  • I have to play this piece for my final exam in May. I find it beautiful and emotionally strong but it is quite difficult to interpret. I guess I just need more time to be able to understand every little part of it. Martha Argerich's interpretation inspires me, her interpretation is perfect. She's like a goddess to me.

  • @onlymusiciansallowed

i understand! but i am that opinion, that this music doesn t need another creativity! it is so nice and charming in itself,,,and Argerich knows it! She is brilliant!

  • Awesome! TY k for sharing

  • Lovely playing.TY for posting.

  • I firmly believe that dislike comments are so profound that people can find time to enjoy them regardless of how many times they are reiterated. Humans possess a boundless capacity for contriving different ways to phrase dislike comments, and today we are honored to be among the pioneers of this invaluable skill.

  • why does she and other pianists do a decrescendo at measures 8-9 when there is a crescendo in the music?

  • @tiredandhungry1 i guess it just sounds better

  • @tiredandhungry1 i know! amazing recording but keep the tension at that moment!!!!!! ahh!!!

  • Mi sono innamorata.

  • awesome ! I love that rhapsody !

  • it's funny cause "Brahms" spelt backwards is "genius".

  • I agree, this is a brilliant peace, but it's difficulty is not one of Brahms toughest scores,it has great dynamics and Marth plays it with the best feeling I have heard yet

  • god, the intro is so kickass

  • very strange the way she read the developpment in G major. Where are the bass ? she put this like a 4 notes melody but this is a white notes and two blacks notes upon Oo..

  • it's even more amazing when you are seeing the music right in front of you, because you can start to grasp just how difficult it is.

  • amazing pianist

  • 9 people are capable of producing opinions

  • This is magic.

  • I'm learning this piece!!!

  • Argerich's approach is very much on the elegant side..whereas lots of passion from most male pianists. can't tell which is better

  • this helped me a lot in trying to interpret this piece cause before that i sucked at it. her playing is just wow o_o

  • I like this interpretation but consider Solomon's deeper, more tenebrous and misterious... so more exciting. This is to be explained in the character of the sound: Solomon p and pp are somehow 'fuller', endowed with an energy coming more from the Unconscious, while in Argerich I have the impression the beautiful dynamics comes more from the 'Intellect'.

  • this is legit

  • I have to learn this for my senior recital...

  • This performance is world-class, but respectfully it it edged slightly by Artur Rubinstein's. Aergerich is a magnificent artist and (this is meant with respect) when she was young, in her twenties and thirties, she was an extraordinarily beautiful and attractive young woman.

  • @nirmz94 thanks very much Hun:) I hope my teacher holds out! (she is 86 and has had a couple of strokes recently:()

  • Great performance... Love her playing... :)

  • @spiderwomanatl hehe you sound exactly like my mother. I did my performers certificate when I was 16 and had a ten year reprieve, finally picked it up this year and am doing my ATCL (I don't have a piano thus have to practice at her place). Needless to say I have a very happy mum again:) xxx

  • @ozmonto good luck with your ATCL! :)

  • Zehr Gut........ jack

  • I think those 2 chords at the end are quite hilarious since they just come out of nowhere

  • Wow this is really good the dynamics are wonderful!!!

  • I played this song last summer and I'm trying to relearn it...... Not that I could ever compare to this epic amazingness. I just want to remember it. XD Luckily I kept the sheets so it won't be too bad.

  • When my daughter was at her best, she could outshine anyone I have heard. Period. I only wish now that she had a piano and was practiced up on it.

  • 00:50 - 01:20 <3

  • I want to listen to a variety of recordings, but none of the others on Youtube compare to this. >.<

  • I really love the intro. It sounds almost like it's furiously brooding, but then you get these little snippets of major chords

  • Where's this recording from? Would love to know.

  • Freakin amazing. She is my hero.

  • what are some unique characteristics in this piece?

  • Kill me!! The sound she makes doesn't even sound like she's playing the piano! That sounded negative..but this is the way the piece was meant to be. She is not at all confined by the sheet music! She created this interpretation with no bounds!

  • I've never heard a better version of this...it's so lyrical. Argerich is a treasure! Thanks for posting!

  • Wonderful!

  • @Mourissi Seriously? Intelligent comments only, thank you very much.

  • @pinchofsalt100 Mourissi was giving a compliment to the pianist by insulting the taste of the 9 idiots who don't think this piece is exquisite in every conceivable way.

  • wow. i didn't even realize there was a repeat in the song until now. here i've been playing the song without it the whole time.

  • Martha, excellent interpretation. I will be more relaxed and expressive with my tempo as you did. I think that's what Brahms had in mind. Thank you.

  • Incredible! My skin tingles and eyes fill with tears. So beautiful. Thank you.

  • Nine people don't know anything about music. This is magnific

  • i dont know why but i found those two chords at the end hilarious.

  • @Simon0 LOL

  • oh my god untill now I know I am too fast ... without the repeat I make 4;35 haha.I need to slow it down.

  • Comment removed

  • Martha you're the BEST!

  • The best piece of Brahms!!

  • I find it way to fast !

  • this is from Argerich Debut concerto in1960

quality of recording is amazingly for 50 yrs ago

  • @kyokutyou2007 I find that hard to believe.. How do you know this is Argerich's debut concerto? Sound quality is just too good for a 1960's recording

  • @senormartus

because I bought this CD .

you can hear the sample of this at the US amazon.

plaese search "Martha Argerich - Debut Recital"

  • @senormartus

It wouldn't surprise me if they cleaned it up a little.

That said, there a lot of performences floating around from the 1960s by a variety of other pianists/other musicians, as well as many other of Ms. Argerich's recordings around 1965-66 which sound pretty good to me.

  • Aaaaaah, 5:26

    Perfection!

  • @PhysiqueQuantique i agree the contrast when she moves to that part is beautiful.

  • What a fantastic rendition of this dramatic piece!

And damn. That passage starting at 0:50 ... I could keep on repeating it for eternity, sounds so awesome.

  • @MrOliverKjaerulff ah you are so right its beautiful

  • 7 people are too dumb to appreciate the brilliance of this piece.

  • @DinosaurBones97 i personally love this piece, but that's not a fair statement...one's intelligence and one's affinity for a brahm's piece have no relation

  • I am in love with argerich!!!!

  • Wow. Wow. I've always been a fan of Argerich, as she expresses most in her interpretations. But wow...I feel, literally, overloaded with emotions!!!

This is the best song and I've heard it many times recently due to piano competitions - but nothing can compare to this meaningful interpretation...WOW!!!

  • i love this song! i so much like playing it! good interpretation of Martha Argerich... i also love how she interpretates the concerto for piano and orchestra number 3 from Tchaikovsky :) marvelous!

  • I just don't understand on the composer standpoint, why gripe on the sonata form, when (to me) force fittingly is not very aesthetic. I like Beethoven's logic.

  • one of the most beautiful pieces i've ever heard. Heart-achingly beautiful

  • @pianoman727 sotto voce means literally 'under the voice' or half voice. it's supposed to be softer if it says that. you should study your italian.

  • @tuc35506 I thought 'mezzo voce' was half voice?

  • One of my favs to play. One can tell Brahms was a pianist by the hand acrobatics in the peace, very fluid

  • great!

  • character, good dynamic and fortune. brahms isnt easy io play.

  • I think that it's the best interpretation that we can find on Youtube , but I completely agree with "

pianoman727 ". There are many unjustified arguments, like crescendos / decrescendos, or the increased tempo. Even if it's not " amazing ", it's a very great piece, played by a wonderful pianist !

  • absolutely amazing!!!!!

  • WOW That was excellent! I'm excited to play this piece, but I think it will be too hard for me... I'm scared... XD I've only been playing for 3&1/2 years, and the hardest song I've ever played was Turkish March. So I don't think I'm ready. But my teacher seems confident, so I guess we'll find out. :)

  • Perfect dynamic!!! Amazing!

  • This is the best interpretation on youtube. I've just spent an hour listening to a bunch of videos. none can compare to this amazing performance.

  • Much, much better than Gould's.

  • It's better than Gould's interpretation. This has a lot more feeling and passion, but it's played way to fast sometimes.

  • @AngelusExitium

yeah I agree gould had aspergers

adroitness great for bach but *not* the romantics

  • i've learnt this song and now i just need the final touches, and i think the best one to listen to is this one

  • Beautiful interpretation. She is brilliant.

  • I dunno, its a little too hurried in some sections. Overall nice, not better than Gould's interpretation. =p

  • the best interpretation i've heard so far!

  • *speechless* another brilliant piece.... played by argerich.... TTwTT *cry*

  • This is how it should be played. And that is a very soft piano.

  • effective

  • Gould's interpretation sounds so flat to me, it's all interpretation and opinion

  • @bestskater94 uauauauauauaauau....she plays superficially??? ...so,how I would play superficially...traslation :in this perfect way, using her magic prhasing and dynamic !

  • The best version I have heard so far. Really molto passionata and intriging.

  • What a brilliant artist.

  • I agree with you. What an incredible pianist. I know nothing about technicalities, only what I like to hear. I don't question the genius of either Rachmaninoff or Argerich. But I love to listen to her. She makes me cry and I feel as terrible as this sounds for a novice to say, she makes Rachmaninoff seem ordinary when I know he is anything but...I would do anything to have a musical gift like hers. Incredible!

  • this and Gould's no-rubato-at-all- interpretation are my favorite

  • exzellentes Spiel,

  • Amazing!!

  • For all her banging? If you mean that it is loud and pointless, she gets quiet at around 3:45.

  • ....Brahms wurde mir näher gebracht mit dieser Aufnahme......großartig.....Martha Argerich

  • To me, this is the best interpretation of the piece out there.

  • sorry, to contradict, but, though I don't doubt her skill, I do find her interpretation a little harsh.

  • She's much better at this than her B minor. This might be the best record I've heard, in fact.

  • after learning the piece and comparing serveral interpretations,i found "Radu Lupu"'s version the most appealing.he seems 2 have a natural flair 4 Brahms.

  • I like this one. It seems Argerich has created one personalized interpretation for Brahms

  • Martha is amazing! The tempo fluctuations are quite intriguing; she turns Brahms' work into her own masterpiece, very lyrical, poignant, and introspective.

  • Lol at your vocabulary.

  • LOL, didn't know music playing is a beauty contest. Jeewiz, I must have missed out a lot. So according to your opinion, we have to send Jeffry Tate home and banish him from this world. Am I reading you right? Sir?

  • I'm Not a big fan of this intepration but Martha Argerich is amazing.

  • im seeing her in carnegie october 7th!

  • Argerich is THE best woman pianist alive. (and she's better than most men!) The Clara Schumann of today, I believe.

  • Comparing her to Clara Schumann may not be appropriate as Ms. Argerich's mercurial disposition, both professionally and personally, would place her far from the "virtuous" Clara in comparison. With her Latin temperament maybe comparing her to a Teresa Carreno would be more in line. However, there is this Brahms thing that both Clara and Martha seem to share in...

  • Virtuosically comparable to Novaes or Renard (Renard from Chile, Novaes from Brazil), but I think her kind of playing is highly individual so much so that aguably she is in her own class.

  • I agree. I find myself accepting almost everything she does. Argerich has individuality, a quality that I think is rarer today than it was during bygone "golden age" of romantic piano playing. Argerich is a true romantic, and that is part of her appeal for me. Listen to 1st mvmt of her Chopin 2nd Sonata if you haven't already! You mentioned Novaes--probably my alltime favorite female pianist! Now THERE was a pianist....

  • ...who in the late Harold Schonberg's words was "one of the few who could be imaginative without sounding mannered". I still think she had the most beautiful tone of any pianist I ever heard, live or recorded...with the possible exception of Hofmann or Cortot (and those 2 are before my time)...but I was lucky enough to have heard Novaes once in person, near the end of her career. I think Argerich in many ways is a pianist in that tradition...I love what she does here with the Brahms!

  • Have you heard Rosita Renard? She was a senior student of Arrau under Krause but only made one set of live recordings at Carnegie Hall at the end of her life, since she devoted most of her time to teaching. I think she's more similar to Argerich than Novaes, incredible color, power, speed from both pianists.

  • No, unfortunately I haven't, though I do know of those recordings. One of my teachers, Gyorgy Sandor, once spoke of having been on a sea voyage from South America to either Europe or North America in the 1940s and having been very impressed by a woman pianist he heard playing in the ship's lounge. He later found out that this pianist was Rosita Renard!

  • There are a couple posts of her live recording on YouTube if you are interested

  • I just listened to her Chopin Etudes and Mendelssohn Variations serieuses--fabulous!! You are exactly right--she shared a strong temperament and awesome technique with Argerich--lucky are those who got to study with her!

  • I am floating in heaven right now...

  • The best interpretation:) Bravo:)

  • I can vouch for how technically challenging this piece is, my sister is learning it right now. I'm not a pianist, but I am thoroughly impressed with Algerich.

  • @toolatescissors It's not technically challenging at all compared to most other works pianists like Argerich play. I've been practising this piece for two days and haven't come across any technical hurdles

  • She plays perfect notes. I don't see too much tempo changes, can you give me some examples?

  • The second part seems a bit fast, but honestly... You're right, it's so clean and perfect, I agree 100%.

  • "Argerich is the best"

    Arthur Rubenstein?!!!!!

  • not only technically brillant

  • perfect!!!

  • The best ! Love it :x:x
