Company sales is subtracted by the cost of material. What this is called is Gross profit. There is no direct tax on this profit. You subtract the operating expense, which includes the pay that goes towards the workers. This is now called EBIT. They then pay interest to debt holders, and only then tax is deducted. So if Joe the plumber is the sole proprietor, all the cash goes towards him. So all the workers and etc is irrelevant.
