This is so fucking retarded. Humphrey Bogart looks like a pervert who jerks off to Big Jugs Magazine, but in the movies, all the hot women are undressing him with their eyes. Give me a break.
One of those hot women, Lauren Bacall, married the guy. Charisma and confidence go a long way, and he had those in spades (no pun intended, Maltese Falcon fans).
@Piecesof8 She married him because he's Humphrey fucking Bogart, the rich Hollywood superstar. She wouldn't give him a second look if he were a penniless private eye as in this movie.
How come I can't find hot bookstore owners like this? Bogey gets them, and Eastwood in Magnum Force just has to come home to his apartment and he get's some. Some guys have all the luck.
Great movie but the more I thought about it, having read the novelette, I think it would have been better if they had done the story the way Raymond Chandler wrote it....the Mitchum re-make came closer but, Bogey in B/W would have been better...The romance w/the older sister doesn't work for me in the context of the story and Marlowe's character and the book's ending is better....
I am SO envious of Bogart, the one sweet thing about Film Noir you when into babes all the time, its like a buffet of sexy women in The Big Sleep. I know The Cheap Detective top this movie by having Peter Falk in the end be in a taxi cab with all the lovely ladies he encountered.
I'm turning 17 this year. I have little knowledge about life back in that era, and when I watch movies like these, I don't expect anything except boring.
But this, oh my god, is FABULOUS. I think this is my favorite movie scene ever. This movie has begun to interest me, vaguely :)
Basically he is investigating a bookstore which is actually a front for pornography photos (which back then was illegal). The book and movie are both amazing.
I second that emotion! Dorothy's talent & her character's sexy but yet sweet manner are what make the scene a classic! Typical Howard Hawks male-female interaction with strong sexual undertones. THANKS for your thoughtful & insightful comment! :)
I studied this movie in a college film class and the professor who taught the class told us that it was said that Dorothy Malone got so nervous when she got close to Bogart, that she kept shaking the paper cup as she held it up. Finally, after several blown takes, the prop master came up with the idea to put a small weight used to keep standing lights from tipping over in the bottom of her cup to keep it from shaking.
This is a fantastic movie, even though it's incomprehensible. It LOOKS so good, and the acting's so good, that you don't really mind that you can't ever understand what happened.
This scene comes right after Bogie pretends to be a fussy gay man at the rare book store. He goes across the street to this bookstore and makes it clear in his interaction with this woman that he's definitely not gay - although, of course, it's all just implied. Still, we know something sexy happens.
If that's the closest they came to having sex back then, it's a miracle I was conceived.

It's funny how this scene plays out. It doesn't even come close to this, at all. Marlowe just goes in and asks for some information and leaves.
It's interesting to see how much they changed not only this, but the entire movie. I wonder if Bogart had any influence in it.

@Jujuman2003 Your ignorance of the relationship between Bogart and Bacall is only exceeded by your obvious lack of experience with the fairer sex.

I don't think this scene would have held the interest of the viewers without Dorothy.

Tommygun, good story about Dorothy Malone. I think she was 20 or 21 when this scene was filmed. She more than holds her own.
