The What's Going On album came out in 1971, to be accurate. I know, because I bought the album when I was in Jr. High. One of the greatest albums of all time! A classic and landmark, was relevant then, and is just as relevant now!
You should have a look about the Funk Brothers, the band who played with all the Motown artists. James Jamerson ( the bassist ) is absolutely amazing in What's Going On. Once you listen to the Bassline it's a whole new song that pops out and that's the same for each instrument in each song.
And that's why is simply love and adore What's Going On.
STOP DOWNLOADING! Bands deserve to get paid. It doesn't make them "sellouts"..If your boss doesn't pay you for your job at Mc d's you are getting ripped off like downloaders rip off bands.Cool bands cant recoup costs from their labels and are getting dropped. We will be stuck with GaGa and Beiber cuz 12 yr olds pay for music more than "indie" kids do. It is also compromising the state of the internet. It's a human problem not a music problem.Give something back to music and the net.
this is one of my favorite albums..and play it on my record player. It's a beautiful album cover and there's a song where he sings about going home to his mom and his father..it's sad since it was his father that killed him.Great album!!!
Great Album. Very Peaceful and kickback, and great phrases from Marvin Gaye ''War is Not the Answer''...''for only Love can conquer Hate''.Questioning where did all the Peace and Love went in this world, and telling us to love our family and each other. ***** 5 Stars my Brothers and Sisters.Great Review my friend. RIP Marvin Gaye
Excellent video Anthony. One thing you missed is James Jamerson played bass on a number of tracks and he has to be one of the greatest and smoothest players of all time
Recently bought the 40th anniversary package being the year was out in end-of-year sales, and it cemented my love for this album. It's just really really lush. I'm yet to hear anything else of his really, so I can't compare it to any of his other works, but as a stand-alone album, it's definitely a classic.
on behalf of my fellow Caribbean people, we wanna know when are you gonna review some dancehall/reggae music? i think the genre needs alot more recognition there is alot of dope new school artiest like mavado, tarrus riley, and etc dont let the Caribbean accent throw you off these guys be saying some dope stuff but anyways big up yuh self!
i'm not gonna lie, i think i love you for picking this in your classics week. i love watching your reviews even if i don't know the music because its thorough and well thought-out, and you picking this, and me being a soul music lover, its definitely a perfect way to start the year for me. Marvin Gaye and this album is fantastic and i love that you picked it. now do some Donny Hathaway maybe?
Haven't given this whole album a real listen since middle school. Definitely have to do that soon. Although I have returned to "Mercy Mercy Me" throughout the years.
Watching this was possibly the blackest thing I've done in the past few months. Someone addressed by the N-word to get me attention. My friends and I couldn't stop laughing the entire day.
Just so you know, I know I, and probably a ton of other ppl too, would really appreciate it if you maid this more often, even just a monthly thing. I know how resilient you are towards doing these because you want to introduce us to new music, and we want to be introduced to new music too, but you also have to realize that not everyone has the musical knowledge you do. Many of us would greatly appreciate getting introduced to more of the classics. Just thought you should keep this in mind :P
This is my favorite album that you have reviewed. Though I love this album to death I've always recognized if not for Marvin's ability to emote vocally this album wouldn't be as strong. The production and Marvin's voice overshadow any of the pie in the sky lyrics. As far as the religious aspects I'm pretty atheist and still love the religious songs. I always chalk up religious moments on any album as good in that the artist is giving all of themselves and that's all a fan can ask for.
Regarding the 'religious' issue you had with 'God is Love' and 'Wholy Holy', you have to understand that most of the great soul singers started singing in Church. Gospel music and Judo-Christian theology inform a lot of 'African American' musical forms, going as far back as the Negro Spirituals. The tension between the sacred and profane is one of the underlying subtexts that informs the body of work of Marvin Gaye and many other soul legends such as Al Green.
If your a bass player, you can only marvel at the genius of James Jamerson's bass playing on this album. Gotta give props to Bob Babitt for his contribution on the last 4 tracks. Also this album has arguably the greatest opener and closer of any album. The closing track 'Inner City Blues' is one of the most timeless grooves ever laid down, in my humble opinion. Incredible grooves underneath messages which speak to the heart of humanity and are even more relevant today than back in 1971.
Learning the story behind the making of the album and its historical context lends even greater appreciation. In no way, shape or form is this album critically overated. From a purely aesthetic perspective, it is one of the most rewarding albums to listen to. And it doesn't drag on. Its duration is short of 35 minutes yet its emotional range is vast, seemingly limitless. I've been listening to this album for more than half my life, and it feels just as fresh everytime I play it.
Sarah Vaughan and many other great artists across varying genres. The production and arrangements are timeless, and the singing is as good as it ever got. Its as close to perfect as an album ever got. It was overlooked by the grammys in the year that Carol King made her singer/songwriter masterpiece album, Tapestry. Also it was released in the same year as Sly & The Family Stone's 'There A Riot Going On', which translates as the anwser to the question Marvin raised.
This is an album I've recently discovered, but it became an all-time favorite very quickly. The arrangements are lush and beautiful, and the message is positive. Fantastic and very influential "classic" album.
It set the template for the direction of soul music in the 70's. Stevie Wonder still considers it his favorite album and says it inspired him to take his music in the direction he went during he classic run of albums from 1972's Music Of My Mind to 1976's landmark 'Songs In The Key Of Life'. Many artists from all genres have covered the songs on the album, including Aretha Franklin on her 1972 masterpiece Gospel album 'Amazing Grace', Donny Hathaway, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald...
and the late David Van Depitte translated Marvins vocal sketches into some of the most beautiful string arrangements to grace a pop or soul record. The lyrics and messages were all essentially autobiographical from his persective (What's Going On, Flying High) and the perspective of his brother (Hey Brother) who sent him letters while he was fighting in the Vietnam War and informed by his faith (God is Love, Wholy Holy).
Nothing corny about this album. It stands alongside Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue, John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' and Stevie Wonder's Innervisions. Its a groundbreaking album on so many levels, and the musicianship is of the highest order, with the legendary Motown house band The Funk Brothers, providing the rhythm section, and arguably the greatest bass player that ever lived, James Jamerson holding down the groove on the first 5 tracks. Marvin played piano on every track....
The album sat on my shelf for the better part of a year before I listened to it intentionally. Such a beautiful album that is scary relevant to today. I think there should be a place for this kind of honest yet hopeful music in everyone's collection. Essential listening.
Its true, even though I am an atheist, the overall tone of the album and the message (aside from the religious parts) really speak to me. Love this album!
When I came to check out your next review, an expression of utter astonishment and joy spread across my face, I wish I could have took a picture. Nice pick for a classic review Anthony.
@MidKnight696 His review on Childish Gambino's "Camp" has to be on my "Top 10 Least Favorite Needle Drop Reviews". I'm a fan of Anthony for a while and I'm still very disappointed by the review.
@adsbegone I'm dissapointed with his Tha Carter IV review. And I actually agree with his verdict, just not the methods he took to get there. "It's Lil Wayne, what did you expect" is not a form of criticism in any way.

@MidKnight696 He's only reviewing older/classic albums this week, so expect him not reviewing these sorts of albums for a long time after this week.
