Been a while since I watched this but enjoyed it as it helps improve my game and I am entertained at the same time. Love your blitz as well but it would be good if you could make a few more instructive videos like this. Have been a member of your chessworld site for a couple of years now and really enjoy it. Thanks KIngsccrusher.
When Fischer was "very young",he already had had time to become US champion and got the title of grandmaster.Geller had no such opportunities as Fischer ,he started to play chess only in the age of 16.His development as a top chess player was delayed by the timing of World War II, which hit the Soviet Union exceptionally hard.
Winning the US title and obtaining a GM title primarily in western events at that time was nothing compared to taking on the Soviets, which completely dominated the west until 1972. Had Geller been a western player, he would certainly be more well known today. He was very strong. Geller was simply overshadowed by his countrymen.
At their peaks, Fischer was probably better. If Geller had played all of his games against the Fischer of '72, I don't think he would have had a positive record.
Geller was also cheated by the FIDE rule that the soviets could only field 3 competitors. This was a terrible and unjust rule. Geller was unfairly harmed by this rule, and many other Soviets as well. Particularly Leonid Stein, who was very strong.
But I don't think Geller could ever have won the title. His candidates match against Spassky, when he lost all those closed sicilians, was just brutal. I think this match is evidence that Geller was not psychologically built to be the champion.
Grandmaster is a grandmaster, whatever country he has come from.Young Fischer played draws against such brilliant Soviets as Averbakh and Tal,he studied Russian chess magazines and learnt Russian language.Fischer was a very talented player and rightfully occupy his place in chess history, but this doesn't account for such speculations as "Fischer would beat Geller in 72".History doesn't know "would-be" dimension. The same talk:"if Spassky wouldn't have let Fischer cosy him-elf up,then...bla-bla-"
wow, i just looked at the comments on your page, you need help, man. you're like a crazy russian ultranationalist or something. i'm not arguing with you anymore.
Dear friend,i am just a harmless daydreamer. My position is in grave contast to the position of USA government that has ravaged so many countries during last 10 years and accounts for millions of victims.Since this is your people that manage this government,I have every right to suspect you to be so very ultra-nationalistic and crazy american nationalist.I think the whole american nation needs help.Don't argue with me anymore,I know, you have nothing to say.
Thank you,Tryphon, this game is beatiful.I liked the way you represented the players.I'll add that Efim Geller was also a candidate for World Champion title, but,as was the case in those times, couldn't compete because of the quata for USSR.Say,4 Russian players earned enough points to qualify in finals but only one was allowed to become a representative of USSR in a Candidate tournement even though players from other countries turned out to be far weaker than those 3 left in USSR.
In my opinion white played terribly in this game. Such slow development of his pieces while moving the knights back and forth, no real attempts to open lines until the end of the game, and very strange positional moves like Qa2? I don't understand this at all.
too very good players, I am also sure that I am not alone when I say that Efim Geller was way a stronger player that Averbakh, Geller had amazing score against strong players including world champions, I think he would have qualified in curacao had he not played the king's india so much
Waow nice play by black. Very subtle attack. Interesting rook sacrifice too. White could of attacked sooner maybe he seemed a bit too passive in my opinion.

Some Geller vs world champ(Fischer) games please! Geller is one of my favourite attackers, and his style is alot of fun to analyse :)
ex0duzz 3 years ago
geller had a very good record against fischer, mainly due to getting lots of wins when fischer was very young.
i've never heard the phrase "restrain, blockade, undermine, queen" i've only heard "restrain, blockade, DESTROY!!!" ala nimzovitch.
very good game, very good commentary.
