  • great song then and now

  • Box Tops, one of the best things about '60's.

  • As good as it gets for the great decade of the 1960s.

  • Great song! You know the original is good too by Eddie Arnold.

  • One of the greatest songs of all time, period. I have a collection of 1960"s - both vinyl and tape - that would blow your mind. But I listen to this one here more often than most others.

  • So Deep"

I don't know much, But I know I LOVE you so much!

  • Love The Box Tops : ^ ) Thanks for posting .

  • You're welcome, AdmiralAveil-san!!

  • this song was a big hit just as I was starting my first year at the U of W. I always associate with that great time.

  • I loved The Box Tops and "The Letter" was a great song; however, "Soul Deep" was my personal favorite. They had a lot of good songs. Thank you for this post.

  • You're welcome, 0917gva-san!!

  • Such a shame to hear Alex Chilton, the lead vocalist for The Box Tops, was taken to the hospital in New Orleans on March 17, 2010, complaining of health problems, and died the same day of a suspected heart attack.

  • I remember this song way back when but I didn't know it was performed by the Box Tops.

  • Great song from August of 1969. Thanks so much for posting!

  • Might have been a wonderful guy if I had not gone to Vietnam and did awful things. Anyway, this music was in that time and it is really good to listen to. Love is "soul deep"

  • @foneBro The things you did in Vietnam you were ordered to do, and you did them because you were honestly trying to give those people freedom like we have here... and THAT makes you a wonderful guy... you have to forgive yourself... it's time for it to be over. Have an excellent weekend, friend...All You Need Is Love.

  • 60otaku3, I always find myself running into your videos when I'm looking for good songs. You upload the best music!

  • fa0798,

Because you showed specific url here, I deleted your comment.

Please consider about it on my video.

    60otaku3

  • R.I.P. Alex. I loved this song since I was a teenager when I first heard it.

  • @rodni7777 Alex Chilton died from attempting to perform self felatio.

  • supersondessixties-san,

Why do you post the same comment on a lot of videos??

You're doing an act same as a wicked spammer clearly.

Because I judged your comment had nothing to do with this song quite, I deleted it at once.

Also I intend to completely block your account if you repeat the same act to my videos.

  • @UNIT4PLUS1 cool

to frickin explain to me how you could truly "dislike" this song??

  • Love his gravelly voice!

  • Great upbeat feel-good song......I'm 18 and I wish I had grown up in the 60's when REAL music like this was on the radio....

  • Today's folks...rediscover MANY instruments, emulate (don't copy) these great artists, add your own flava...add modern synthesizing, and digital....Create!! But dammit make it sound good!! Make it from the heart. You have a lot to learn from this stuff

  • Bland

  • Otaku-san, Here I am again.....hehehe

  • Man, you just made the best of a mediocre day for me! Wow! This is much better than my 45!

The stereo sound really adds a lot. I'm hearing things I hadn't noticed before.

I have to send this to my ex-girlfriend [from 41 years ago! She'll flip cuz this was our song]

Thanx and God Bless you pal!

    Bob

  • Thanks for your kind comment on this song, Bob-san!!

  • @60otaku3 Everyone likes good music. Do you know about "Sukiyaki"? That song kicks ass, and it's from 1966, I think.

  • Yes, that song was sung by Kyu Sakamoto and it reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States in 1963.

    Otaku3 (*^_^)v

  • @Slumpnasty "Sukiyaki" is a great song. I don't remember the year either, but I yearn to hear the return of beautiful, melodic music.

  • @CFMD28 I believe the summer of 1968

  • @pkappel006 This song actually came out in the summer of 69.

  • @jaytf1231 thanks, I new it was either or

  • This guy [Chilton] was really talented.

  • Wow talk about finding lost treasure! Haven't heard this since I was a teenager in the 90's, the oldies station would play it. Now they don't since they play 70's and 80's. I had no idea it was the Boxtops. Now the stations just play The Letter and Cry Like a Baby. See how going to Youtube and exploring pays off?

  • RIP Alex... the internet has reunited me with many long lost friends & acquaintances over the last few years ( thank you Sean & Tanya for dragging me out of my non-net 'puter cave ) I hope, I was in a small way able to pay forward that gift from my good neighbors to me, through you.

  • the card read.... 'Alex Chilton-Musician/songwriter- former lead singer for the Boxtops & Big Star' (and that's when my jaw dropped.) "If you get in touch with Larry... tell him I said Hi and pass these numbers along". I found Larry on My Space a few days later and passed the info along. I hope these two genuine, down to earth people found time to touch bases.

  • then waving my hand toward the stage jokingly told him that I have always had a knack for befriending Quality Musicians, and that back in the day, Larry used to run with my old crew in Kissimmee, "the Kissimmee Trend Setters". "Damn, I've played with Larry and at his club many times over the years" He then explained that after Larry sold the Club, he had lost touch, spending most of his time in Memphis and New Orleans. He gave me his card...

  • The band broke, Sean joined us and he and Alex discussed and caught up on some City Walk shop talk, mentioning that he had just been in Memphis and KC working on some studio work. As the band was getting ready for their next set, I asked if he knew a friend of mine who had many years before moved to KC to partner in opening a Jazz Club there, Larry Van Loon. His jaw dropped and asked "How do you know Larry?" I told him that Larry played the clubs in Kissimmee some 30 years earlier...

  • Alex Chilton & Stevie Winwood, two youngsters whose voices were "soul deep" Meeting Alex last year at Universal was a highlight to a great evening and a somewhat surreal small world situation. I was having a few beers enjoying my good neighbor Sean and his band mates from "The Leonard Brothers" perform at City walk. Just before intermission Alex, an apparent musical acquaintance of Sean, asked Sean's wife Tanya if an empty seat at our table was available and introduced himself as he joined us..

  • Bought Box Tops LP in the 70's. This song was in my head yesterday for some unknown reason.

  • better than the Letter, imo.

  • One of the best rock voices ever- hands down.

  • Great song!

  • what can you say.best 16 yr.old voice ever.rip alex.gone 2 soon.will never forget.thanks for the memories.

I am very glad for your comment.

    Otaku3 (*^_^)/

  • @OttoDahlberg1 hope you will take this the right way, the voice

reminds me of one of the Righteous Bros. I always that they

were not white. Enjoyed their music through my teens

  • Would like to dedicate this one to Bev and Mary. We were 13-14 and used to scream when this came on the radio!! and say "this is my song". Crusin' Gratiot. Luv ya.

  • What a voice! The 60s may have been the most turbulent decade of all but it produced a ton of classics like this. Alls clowns like the Jonas Brothers and all of the suit-produced gay boy bands ought to drop what they are doing and listen to some REAL music like this. RIP Alex - thank you for your contribution to music.

  • @franklinrocks1

  • Unfortunately because of his untimely death, maybe Alex Chilton and the Box Tops will finally get their due. This was one fine group who had many hits in the late 60's. Loved everything they did.

  • There must be an amazing supergroup out there somewhere, now Alex has joined them. RIP Forever Good Guy. We all loved you man....

  • Thanks for the musical memories Alex, Rock N' Roll Heaven just got more a little more soulful. RIP.

  • Fabulous song--I know I've heard it before just never noticed how good it was or connectd it to the Boxtops. Chilton's vocals make him sound a lot older than 18---Solid stuff, Chilton's place in Rock/R@B ensured.

  • Great song RIP Alex Chilton

  • Thank you Alex for the many happy years and for leaving for the world so much wonderful stuff.

  • A great voice silenced all too soon.......Rest In Peace.

  • The best of the blue-eyed soul singers. He'll never be replaced. Thanks for the music, Alex.

  • RIP you legend Alex. Gone too soon.

  • Goodbye to a unique voice ... RIP, Alex ..

  • Alex Chilton and The Box Tops churned out a bunch of great songs in the 60s. This one is noteworthy for it's marriage of pop and soul.

  • Rest easy, my friend... the largest sin of the 1960's was the ambivalence the labels showed Alex Chilton and The Box Tops... true purveyors of 100% certified Blue-Eyed Soul

  • So long soul brother. Thanks for the great music!

  • Loved the Box Tops and this song in particular brings back wonderful memories of a nice hot Summer.

Rest in Peace Alex and thank you for the good music you shared with us.

  • So talented, soulful and so sad to see him go........what a friggin' awesome voice, that energy......very cool!

  • Sad day.

    Great talent.

    Great loss...

  • Alex Chilton (December 28, 1950 March 17, 2010) The Box Tops * Big Star (R.I.P.)

  • R.I.P.

  • People like a cult hero but they won't buy his records. Alex had to work as a landscaper and dishwasher. The life of a real musician is hard. Sympathy or good intentions don't put bread on the table or a roof over your head.

  • @Unclemoparman

Alex went through tough times but he was doing OK the last 20 years or so...

  • what sad news R.I.P. Alex Chilton ...

  • Thank You For Posting;

    Rest in Peace, Alex Chilton.

    Cheers!

    Valkyrie Ziege Mourne
