One of the greatest songs of all time, period. I have a collection of 1960"s - both vinyl and tape - that would blow your mind. But I listen to this one here more often than most others.
Alex Chilton was one of the all time greats! So sad he left us so soon ... by far my favorite by these guys! All others seem to be overplayed. Thx 4 sharing with us.
I loved The Box Tops and "The Letter" was a great song; however, "Soul Deep" was my personal favorite. They had a lot of good songs. Thank you for this post.
Such a shame to hear Alex Chilton, the lead vocalist for The Box Tops, was taken to the hospital in New Orleans on March 17, 2010, complaining of health problems, and died the same day of a suspected heart attack.
I just adore this song; I loved it immediately upon hearing it. I KNOW it wasn't as big as "The Letter," but I liked this one even more than I loved "The Letter." Every aspect of this song simply appeals to me. Thank you for a great post.
Might have been a wonderful guy if I had not gone to Vietnam and did awful things. Anyway, this music was in that time and it is really good to listen to. Love is "soul deep"
@foneBro The things you did in Vietnam you were ordered to do, and you did them because you were honestly trying to give those people freedom like we have here... and THAT makes you a wonderful guy... you have to forgive yourself... it's time for it to be over. Have an excellent weekend, friend...All You Need Is Love.
Today's folks...rediscover MANY instruments, emulate (don't copy) these great artists, add your own flava...add modern synthesizing, and digital....Create!! But dammit make it sound good!! Make it from the heart. You have a lot to learn from this stuff
Wow talk about finding lost treasure! Haven't heard this since I was a teenager in the 90's, the oldies station would play it. Now they don't since they play 70's and 80's. I had no idea it was the Boxtops. Now the stations just play The Letter and Cry Like a Baby. See how going to Youtube and exploring pays off?
RIP Alex... the internet has reunited me with many long lost friends & acquaintances over the last few years ( thank you Sean & Tanya for dragging me out of my non-net 'puter cave ) I hope, I was in a small way able to pay forward that gift from my good neighbors to me, through you.
the card read.... 'Alex Chilton-Musician/songwriter- former lead singer for the Boxtops & Big Star' (and that's when my jaw dropped.) "If you get in touch with Larry... tell him I said Hi and pass these numbers along". I found Larry on My Space a few days later and passed the info along. I hope these two genuine, down to earth people found time to touch bases.
then waving my hand toward the stage jokingly told him that I have always had a knack for befriending Quality Musicians, and that back in the day, Larry used to run with my old crew in Kissimmee, "the Kissimmee Trend Setters". "Damn, I've played with Larry and at his club many times over the years" He then explained that after Larry sold the Club, he had lost touch, spending most of his time in Memphis and New Orleans. He gave me his card...
The band broke, Sean joined us and he and Alex discussed and caught up on some City Walk shop talk, mentioning that he had just been in Memphis and KC working on some studio work. As the band was getting ready for their next set, I asked if he knew a friend of mine who had many years before moved to KC to partner in opening a Jazz Club there, Larry Van Loon. His jaw dropped and asked "How do you know Larry?" I told him that Larry played the clubs in Kissimmee some 30 years earlier...
Alex Chilton & Stevie Winwood, two youngsters whose voices were "soul deep" Meeting Alex last year at Universal was a highlight to a great evening and a somewhat surreal small world situation. I was having a few beers enjoying my good neighbor Sean and his band mates from "The Leonard Brothers" perform at City walk. Just before intermission Alex, an apparent musical acquaintance of Sean, asked Sean's wife Tanya if an empty seat at our table was available and introduced himself as he joined us..
Man, I'd forgotten how good this band was,Alex had a awesome voice for a fella his age , the music of today doesn't even come close ........R.I.P ALEX you were the man !!
Would like to dedicate this one to Bev and Mary. We were 13-14 and used to scream when this came on the radio!! and say "this is my song". Crusin' Gratiot. Luv ya.

Unfortunately because of his untimely death, maybe Alex Chilton and the Box Tops will finally get their due. This was one fine group who had many hits in the late 60's. Loved everything they did.
Fabulous song--I know I've heard it before just never noticed how good it was or connectd it to the Boxtops. Chilton's vocals make him sound a lot older than 18---Solid stuff, Chilton's place in Rock/R@B ensured.
Rest easy, my friend... the largest sin of the 1960's was the ambivalence the labels showed Alex Chilton and The Box Tops... true purveyors of 100% certified Blue-Eyed Soul
People like a cult hero but they won't buy his records. Alex had to work as a landscaper and dishwasher. The life of a real musician is hard. Sympathy or good intentions don't put bread on the table or a roof over your head.

UNIT4PLUS1 1 year ago 2

People like a cult hero but they won't buy his records. Alex had to work as a landscaper and dishwasher. The life of a real musician is hard. Sympathy or good intentions don't put bread on the table or a roof over your head.
