@sbtristopher - what you talk about is not a symbol I believe, because it is not being shared between the majority/a large number of people. If we talkl about what the very fact of *erection* of this statue might symbolise, it may be rather that people are able to cooperate and create magnificent art even for hazy purposes that are uncertain or unprovable, such as the idea of there being a God. This is also worthy of respect, of which these jumpers have NOT had any.

I could see this being offensive if they tried landing on it or marking it but they did nothing of the sort. I agree that the statue is worthy of respect, but did the jumpers really show any disrespect?

To use a vivid illustration, as anything more subtle would escape your understanding; you don't need to actually punch someone to express your dislike of that person, you can just make a punching motion towards him.
