OK Jason shouldn't even be in the mix, Cliff was a musical genius in his day , had he still been alive today he may very well be the best ever, as far as Rob goes well, I will say the best performance I ever saw on stage was buy a young Robert Trujillo when he was with Suicidal Tendancies back in 94, he shared the stage that day with JN and the bass player from Fight and he blew them away he is just a monster, so no he may not have created Metallicas best solos but he absolutely created his own.

Its nothing special really. Rob is verry talented but far from to be considered as one of the best. There are enough lesser known bassists who crap all over Rob. Alex Webster,Billy Sheenan,John Myung,Steve DiGiorgio just to name a few. Rob is good but really not as special as everyone makes him....

It's not just the technique of playing the bass....it's also the music that each other created with Metallica. Robert is fast, he has a great playing technique but it's not him who created Orion, Anesthesia, Call Of Ktulu etc....Lars, James and Kirk have stated that without Cliff they would never had created their first three albums. Cliff learned them how to combine musical harmonies and such things....

Cliff was dyed-in-the-wool Thrash. Rob does a little bit of everything-- I still think his style is a little more Nu-Metal. Apples and Oranges, in my opinion.

I'll give the edge to Cliff, not only for his soloing, but his songwriting contributions as well. Listen to Orion, from Master of Puppets. Then listen to anything else afterwards. Big difference, IMHO...

Cliff's sound had more presence than James and Kirk guitars, I'm sorry but It's the true, Kirk Solos, Lars Double-bass, James voice and Cliff's bass sound were the old MetallicA.

When Cliff died, their tone changed, more melodic like the Jason times as you can see in "Justice" with Rob, is the same.
