Historical revisionism doesn't mean making things up it means challenging consensual established ideas about history. This video has helped me learn something and I thank Rys2sense for it. I was taught this falsehood in my history classes at school.
Much of our history is as Ford Snr. said: "bunk". I encourage further research of this sort b/c it's all a work in progress. The more we know the more we know how little we do know. :) Keep up the good work!
As with any film, play or historical reenactment, a dose of fiction is added to carry the storyline along. However, the historical inaccuracies you directly fault in Paul Green's script, simply don't exist anywhere within the text of the play. Read the play...or buy a ticket.
It also presents scenes of two of the previous voyages and mentions the other one, yet you say that it does not. You seem to have done a large amount of research on the actual history of these colonization efforts but none on the play with which you are so upset. So, I kinda gotta wonder how accurate your info on the actual history might be.
At the end of Green's play there is a report that Spaniards have anchored on the other side of the banks and a decision is made to march into the wilderness south to Hatteras to establish a new colony. Nothing about carving anything anywhere.
Ummmm... just so you know... there is absolutely no mention of carving Croatoan on a tree, palisade, or anywhere in Paul Green's script for "The Lost Colony". Not gainsaying your research, but your ultimate gripe with the play and its misrepresentation of this act is absolutely nowhere in the play itself. Nor is there any conjecture of any mysterious disappearance in the script.
Incredible. I’ve been believing this supernatural “Lost Colony” story all my life—ever since I visited the N. Carolina beaches w/ my parents as a kid (maybe that’s what I get for being a Yankee—or at least of a Yankee family). A regional conflict and English embarrassment of plunder. And the English should have stuck w/ the Native tobacco, rather than transplanting richer Turkish tobacco (more addictive—deadlier).
@Rys2sense West Indies, perhaps--but not indigenous to the mainland. What the Cherokee smoked was rougher and w/ less nicotine--they cured it differently, too. It didn't sell well in England, so the milder, higher-nicotine version was brought in. That's what still kills so many Americans (and is killing me--I need to switch smokes or habits). "Tsalagayv'li"--their word for "old tobacco". Wish I got hooked on that.
I have never heard any pretense the carving on the tree was a mystery. The "lost" of the "lost colony" was simply that they did not know why or when the colonists left... whether they were seeking aid after an attack, or were starving, or what. Of course it probably meant they went to Croatia, as you state, yes there was a previous history, which you outline well... I just never heard the misinformation you claim exists. I always knew your version, and never the wrong parts you outline here
@proto57 Croatoan, it would be impossible to go to Croatia. Why do people replace Croatoan (Native Americans) with Croatia (which is in fucking europe)? Anyway They did know when and why they left and where they went. They went BACK to where they had already beee living and because Ralph Lane had made war on the Secotan and the English were getting their asses kicked.

Try reading the play before you trash it.. Or seeing it... Or something. To me, you just come across as a hater for no reason.
