One of the highlights of my own life, is having the privilage of this man calling me his trademark phrase, Pencil Neck Geek ("Take your magazine and get the hell outta here, ya pencil neck geek!") - which triggered The Fabulous Moolah to bust out laughing. Having been a professional wrestler and more importantly, a fan all my life, that highlight brings a tear to my eyes when I think about it, as I am posting this right here, right now.
Here's a lil message to Dixie Carter & Vince McMahon - When a wrestler dies, you might want to make sure that your commentators take the segment seriously, because some of us take it personally when we detect that the commentators are a lil too eager and impulsive to want to get the video package over with as quickly as possible. Michael Cole......Tazz saved you during this segment. Tony Schavonie.....I'll never forget how disingenuous your commentary came off when you announcned Gorilla died.
I don't like the way Michael Cole commentated on Blassie's death in this in this video. It's just not sincere enough for this diehard wrestling fan, and I would have rather preferred it if Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross would have announced that Blassie died on Smackdown, because, I know those two would have gotten the segment over correctly when they reported to the fans that Blassie had died. Michael Cole is too eager. He's too impulsive. He sounds like he can't wait to get this segment over with.
I begin my career in wrestling on Thursday. I'm going to be a wrestling manager for a wrestling promotion in Southern California. There are two people who inspired me to be a manager: One being Sensational Sherri, the other is Freddie Blassie.
I just watched the Gorilla Monsoon tribute and this is another one that makes me very sad. One of the best memories I have of Blassie was as a little kid and seeing Wrestlemania. If you remember The Iron Sheik and Volkoff won the titles from Windham and Rotundo after Sheik hit Windham with Blassie's cane. The new champs were then interviewed by Mean Gene. Gene asked Blassie about the cane and Blassie was like what cane? I don't have a cane.
Wow This man was something else As a Kid seeing him , He was such a chactor , Who can not love this man , Heck this ending gets me all the time he look like he entering heaven , and I am sur eheaven not the same now with Blassie and guerrero and benoit up there ....!
Probably the only positive thing about Freddie's passing was the fact he lived so long and passed away naturally, with a legendary career in both active wrestling and managing, having fun all the way.
there will never be another like freddy blassie, but i will never forget the first and last time i saw him live in philly promoting his book. I am damn proud to say that i was there to see it because not many in this generation can say they have been in the same building with one of the classic hall of fame wrestlers and one of the best in his time
Blassie was a real showman, clearly had a great time during his career and afterwards, and was well respected as a wrestler...Blassie seems to have been to wrestling what Jim Carrey is to comedy.
@fishandfestival What George Carlin was to comedy I think you mean.
That being said, you are right The term legend gets thrown around way too often. The Hollywood Fashion plate Classy Freddie Blassie is a TRUE legend. and yes there was probably no one in the business as Widely respected as he was.
"Ive had a wonderful life somthing that you could not buy, you could spend all the money in the world, and you wouldnt have as much fun as i had. It was a wonderful life" words from a man who was trully blessed to live his life! the world will trully miss a man with such grace!
Years later, I still have trouble watching this triubute along with Curt Hennig's.
This version of the song is a hell of alot better than that rock version they would play on MTV and VH1. The piano version is much more moving than that generic guitar solo and the lead singer sounds more piercing in the rock version.
Wonder if he ever wrestled Gorgeous George. Would have been the Original vs Original the Second. Freddie, G/W and Sheik Adnan Al Kassey = the managerial trinity.
Freddie Blassie was Vince Mcmahon's closest adviser and was like a father in his life after Vince Sr. passed away. When business was down, Vince would call him for advice. He kept im on the payroll long after he retired. One of the best talkers in wrestling.
I remember just 3 weeks before he died he was brought out by a heel tag team (La Résistance I think it was) and the Dudleys came out and beat them down. Sum1 gave Freddie the mic and he said "D-Von..... Get the tables!" The Dudleys laughed and brought them out. Freddie laughed, I was laughing , and the crowd at the arena that night went nuts. Freddie was the greatest.
in remember this in 2003 i was just 13 at the time and never heard of the guy but i cried after watching this and became a fan of classy freddie blassie ever since
Every time I saw him on tv & in interviews you could see his personal warmth shining through. :) He really loved the sport & his sense of humor & fun made it sooooo enjoyable to watch.
